I use a Mac at work and it is every bit as much fond of crashing for no
apparent reason as any PC I've ever had. It's a good machine and all that,
but when it blows up it really leaves you in the ess haitch one tee.

My 2 cent worth,

RE: [wdvltalk] New computer problem

2006-01-10 Thread Ann Dietz

Riva,

It's been awhile since this happened (2002) so I may not have all the
details quite correct but I got a lemon Dell Latitude C640 on the first
ship. Among my chats with various people at Dell that I recall, there was
mention that if the computer was within a 30-day time frame from when it was
built and delivered, the handling and replacement procedures were a little
different. I went back to sales and after they confirmed that the computer
was fried (something with motherboard), they had me re-order the computer
and they replaced it.

You might try going back to the sales people and throwing a temper tantrum,
so to speak. It was very important that all this happen within the 30-day
period. After that the procedures were different.

Good luck,

Ann Dietz

Re: [wdvltalk] New computer problem

2006-01-10 Thread Portman
This is very frustrating. I have had both good and bad experiences with
Dell but I guess I must have had more good than bad because I bought my
last 2 computers from them. They even sent me out a new power supply
and motherboard when someone gave me the wrong advice about installing
RAM and I fried the motherboard. I have had experiences with tech
support where I was telling them what they should be telling me . . .
My sister's history is to buy something really cheap and it dies after a
year or two. I recommended Dell because my last Dell last 5+ years. I
just got a message from her now saying that she was going out but wanted
to let me know what happened with Dell. I will keep you posted if
anyone is interested.

Thanks for all the replies and feedback.

Riva

RE: [wdvltalk] New computer problem

2006-01-10 Thread Cheryl D Wise

Trying to get Apache set up the way I wanted on OS X 10.2 was probably my
most frustrating experience ever with a web server. Give me IIS any day.
Heck, I'd even prefer working straight on any version of Linux; at least the
documentation would be available and probably a lot more accurate. Plus I
would not have been told I needed the $1,000 server OS version. I prevailed
and eventually was able to set it up how I wanted spite of it with help from
O'Reilly's Missing Manual, Google and way too much time.

Same changes in IIS would have been 5 minutes. Apache on a different
platform than only slightly longer but only because I'm not as familiar with
the httpd.conf as I am with the IIS interface.

all the problems I had w/them. I was a died in
the wool Dell customer for years but no more. I
know, to late now. But seeing the Apple plug, I just hadda mention it.

Re: [wdvltalk] New computer problem

2006-01-10 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

Any ideas on how to fix this or on what she should do?

Basic advice Riva is tell her not to buy a Dell!

Not sure what the custom PC market is like outside of the UK but over here
you can buy good quality machines without paying the premiums you do for
branded PCs and support from manufacturers who, in my experience, mess you
about with so much junk and unnecessary pre-installed apps you literally
have to strip them bare to get them to work.

So I'd return the machine for a full refund as non-functional and go to my
local friendly PC supplier and get one from there.

Thanks for the reply. My sister knows very little about computers and is
scared to mess with it.
Dell did tell her that she could call another number and pay for support -
but it is a brand new computer. She did mention that she would sometimes
get to the desktop that would be empty. Other times she would get the
Install New Hardware Wizard but she didn't know what she was installing.
Very disappointing on Dell's part.

drew's advice is good and if Riva's sister is really technology challenged
may be the best thing to do. I would simply say I had very good support
from Dell (via the India link) when I needed it and the charge was very
reasonable (they tell you first what it will be, it is not the old £1.60
dodge - or whatever the dollar system premium line charge is). At least
that was from the UK.
