I've made some confusion, you're wright it's not MDDHosting where they're
some old Webfaction guys but Opalstack.
I'll choose a VPS from Opalstack or OVH. Did someone tried to use
Webfaction on OVH?

Not sure how you got to that screen - looks like an online chat window?
I've always just send email direct to supp...@opalcom and someone

Re: [web2py] Re: web2py hosting

2020-10-16 Thread Jose C
HI Antonio,

Can't speak as to pythonanywhere, but Opalstack definitely supports
automatic Letsencrypt certificates - I have it set up on all my sites. You
just flip a switch on each website and the rest is handled automatically,
including auto-renewals.
See:
https://help.opalstack.com/article/35/how-can-i-use-a-lets-encrypt-ssl-certificate

Also for other general info you may need:
https://help.opalstack.com/category/1/opalstack-guide

I also used to use the mail2script functionality when on WF to handle
incoming bounced emails. Last I inquired Opalstack said it was on their to
do list as they were working on their API, but they suggested an easy
workaround which I've been using since then with no problems.

On Opalstack I implemented the same functionality by dumping copies of
incoming emails I wanted to process into one specific dedicated IMAP
mailbox. Then my script runs via cron (every 5 minutes) and checks that
mailbox periodically for new messages, processes them and deletes them from
the mailbox.

The code is simple (sorry, I can't find the code formatting options in this
new google reply interface):
# Connect to imap mailbox.
ctx = ssl.create_default_context()
server = imaplib.IMAP4_SSL(host=imaphost, ssl_context=ctx)
server.login(mailbox,passwd)
server.select()
resp, items = server.search(None, "UNSEEN")

# process any message(s).
for i in items:
 resp, data = server.fetch(i, "(RFC822)")
do whatever with the message here..
 server.store(i, '+FLAGS', '\\Deleted') # Set delete flag
on this message.

server.expunge()# Physically remove messages that are
flagged as deleted from the mailbox (actually delete).
server.close()
server.logout()

There's also a near realtime example using IMAP IDLE listeners if once a
minute via cron isn't enough. See this thread for details:
https://community.opalstack.com/d/13-mail2script-functionality

HTH,

Hi Antonio,

I just saw this announcement:
https://www.webfaction.com/faq

Reading the "What will not be available when I am migrated to tsohost"...
makes you wonder what they actually do host on their servers! And they're
starting migrations in a couple of weeks and shutting WF down 100% in March.

Anyone who liked the WF control panel, services offered and way of doing
things AND who wants a seamless transfer of their sites to another host, do
yourselves a favour and create an account on Opalstack and check them out.
You should feel right at home.

Either way, good luck with your migrations.

Hi Antonio,

I am a web developer not a server administrator, I hosted at Webfaction
because their
support people were very patient and helpful. After joining forces with GD
support no
longer stands out from the crowd.

Last week I signed up with Opalstack, https://www.opalstack.com/ and I am
glad I did,
great support and a simple but powerful control panel. One of the former WF
support
people wrote a web2py install script which got me up and running in no time.

Hope this was helpful,

There are various hosting services mentioned from time to time around here,
but many of them are "generic" hosts. AWS and Google Apps, of course. I
think Digital Ocean was another popular choice. Heroku seems to be the one
that gets the most questions around here, possibly due to the "filesystem
reset" behavior that gets mentioned.

And when you hit the $20+ level, Linode is now price competitive with
Digital Ocean (but DO also offers $5 and $10 plans, whereas the cheapest

We use Linode for the big stuff and DO for the small stuff, FWIW. I have
nothing but praise for Linode. DO are pretty good, but nowhere near as
polished as Linode, and do not (yet) inspire the confidence that Linode
does.

Two issues with DO that are worth mentioning: -

- No IPv6
This is just slack! It's gone into private beta very recently, I
understand - what I don't understand is why it was not there from day one!

- No swapfile
Can be a gotcha depending on your needs, but easily remedied [1].

I switched to Digital Ocean based Anthony's previous suggestion, and have
only words of praise (price/speed/support)!!! Got nginx+ubuntu and just
needed to run the web2py installation script to set everything up. That was
it, and all worked perfect.

2014-05-22 Thread Annet
Hi,

I also have an account at Webfaction, you instal web2py in 5 steps:

1.Go to: https://wiki.webfaction.com/wiki/InstallScripts
2.Scroll to web2py (Latest stable source), click the Install link. The
create a new application form appears.
3.In the Name field, enter a name for the application (w2p).
4.In the Extra info field enter a password for web2py’s administrative
interface
5.Click the Add application button.

In the control panel you can add a domain without the www

Kind regards,

their install script setup needs to be changed to use less memory by

+1 for Webfaction. It takes a bit of tweaking and configuration to get your
app running with the cheapest plan without hitting the RAM limit (which is
what I suspect some of the mentioned issues were) but once it's up and
running, it works great. I have my apps running on Lighttpd and couldn't be
happier.

I've been working on fluxflex for a couple of weeks now and really like it.
There are a couple of odd things, though, about the automated deployment of
web2py. The biggest is that I can't seem to get at my files! Fluxflex
doesn't support ftp--only git--for uploading and downloading files. That
would be fine, except that when I clone my git directory at fluxflex all
that is downloaded is:

icon.png
README.md
tmp_db_pw
and an empty public_html folder

Unfortunately I've also found that the support at fluxflex leaves something
to be desired--usually several days for a response. So does anyone know what
would be going on here? Why are my fluxflex files not in the git import?

You can use service like linode / slicehost /webfaction to deploy. If
you need managed deployment optimized for web2py with service in
India, contact me

Thanks for the replies. Just saw the limitations of GAE in the book.

Thanks for all the replies. Is there a list of GAE limitations?

Thanks

2010-05-25 Thread Richard
I currently use Webfaction, Slicehost, and Google App Engine.

Webfaction is cheap and relatively easy, but slow lately. Good support
in forums from admins.
Slicehost is FAST, but you have to do everything yourself. Haven't
used their support yet.
GAE is the easiest to deploy with because no configuration required.
But the platform has limitations so isn't always practical. Good
support in forums from other users.

I recommend GAE unless you have special requirements, like a c based
library.

2010-05-24 Thread mdipierro
VPS just gives you a Virtual Private Server for $25/month (including
daily, weakly and monthly backups). You can install one of the many
images they provide (like Ubuntu or any of the TurnKeyLinux
appliances). On Ubuntu installing and configuring a full apache/
postresql/postfix/web2py just requires running /web2py/scripts/setup-
web2py-ubuntu.sh

They have a slider on the admin web site that lets you change the size
of the virtual machine. They have API that allows you partition it and
spawn more instances.I did not use these features.

It is similar to Amazon but simpler (not S3, no SimpleDB) and much
faster to deploy/administer.

webfaction - shared hosting - means all you need to worry about is
your application.
If your traffic is realtively low, this is really easy.

VPS is cloud hosting, so not sure what the setup is - but you can
probably expect to be root on your own linux slice.
Massimo will be able to say if he had to configure Apache, or how far
it came preconfigured.

It does look like the sweet deal for entering the cloud. And your
responsiveness will be noticeably better.
