2023-10-11 Thread Alex Stinson
Congratulations everyone who organized this year! These images and videos
are fantastic and relevant: it's so cool to see such good (and creative)
documentation of the climate crises, other weather events and the
environment of Africa!

Cheers,

Alex

[Wikimedia-l] December 14 Conversation hour about organizing for #WikiForHumanRights 2022

2021-12-01 Thread Alex Stinson
*TL:DR --* Join us for a Conversation hour December 14 at 1500 UTC to learn
how to organize for WikiForHumanRights 2022.

Hello Everyone!

#WikiForHumanRights: Right to a Healthy Environment 2022 [1]is back!
>From April
15 through to June 14 2022 we encourage local affiliates, individuals or
organizations interested in the campaign to organize activities around the
intersecting themes of human rights and the environment.

If you are interested in organizing your community for the campaign, please
join us for a conversation hour on December 14 at 1500 UTC [4] (more
details below) to learn how you can participate.

Why the Right to a Healthy Environment?

This October, the Right to a Healthy Environment was formally recognized
[1] by the United Nations Human Rights Council. According to Michelle
Bachelet, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights:

"A safe, clean, healthy, and sustainable environment is the foundation of
human life. But today, because of human action – and inhuman inaction – the
triple planetary crises of climate change, pollution, and nature loss is
directly and severely impacting a broad range of rights, including the
rights to adequate food, water, education, housing, health, development,
and even life itself."[2]

The environmental crisis is getting more complex. Humanity needs to make
thousands of big and small decisions to address it. As the UN Environmental
Program described it, we need to make “Peace with Nature”[3] and protect
the human rights of the most vulnerable.

Wikipedia and other platforms need to fill the knowledge gaps at the
intersection of sustainability and human rights in every context and
language. The world needs access to reliable information about the link
between environmental sustainability and human rights.

What can you do? Help us organize!

We need your help! The campaign will officially launch on April 15 (one
week before Earth Day), but we need your help now to begin preparing this
global call to action.

Last year we had 24 community-led editathons, workshops, webinars, and
writing contests, with contributions to over 2000 articles in more than 40
languages. To match (and hopefully exceed) these impacts, we need your help
to organize your local communities!

Activities related to human rights and sustainability are good topics for
local communities to both a) identify new partners, b) recruit enthusiastic
participants and c) fill key topics for impact in their own language or
context.

Join the Conversation to learn more!

Join us for 1.5 hours of conversation Tuesday the 14th December 2021 15:00
UTC on Zoom <https://wikimedia.zoom.us/j/84871090509> [4], to learn more
about:

   -

How you can participate in this campaign and organize local events in
   your community or region.
   -

Which topics this campaign will target, and how you can connect with
subject matter experts, partners, and other resources to support successful
   content creation activities.
   -

How the Wikimedia Foundation Campaigns team can support you in designing
your event and doing targeted outreach to potential contributors drawn to
   these topics.

Organizers can find more information at this (still under development): page
on Meta <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiForHumanRights>[5]

If you want to join us as an organizer, please join our Telegram Group

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Introducing 'Wiki for X'

2021-03-30 Thread Alex Stinson
Hi Phillipe and Tulsi,

As you may or may not be aware, I have been guiding an effort to pilot
Wikimedia Foundation capacity for supporting community content campaigns:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Campaigns/Foundation_Campaigns_Team

So we have seen a wide range of different naming conventions for community
campaigns. Wiki Loves typically include photography campaigns, while Wiki
for (or 4) campaigns are typically writing activities with a focus on an
advocacy topic with broad international agreement i.e. representation of
women, SDGs or Human Rights (as Phillipe notes advocacy positions are
complicated ). There are of course exceptions to this pattern (i.e Wiki
Loves SDGS:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Rapid/Wiki_Loves_SDGs_Nigeria )
because the conventions are accidental cultural phenomena rather than
planned and deliberate .

However, suggesting that there needs to be a uniform naming convention
isn't very helpful across widely divergent campaigns with different goals,
different audiences, and different communication contexts (i.e. languages
or cultures). For me, the more important concern is helping organizers
choose the right name for the audiences they want to engage (that, for
example, activists need to know we are supportive of SDGs, Climate action
or representation of Women rather than trying to document something en-mass
i.e. Butterflies or Monuments). For example, Wikipedia Pages Wanting
Photos, WikiGap, Black Lunch Table and InvisibleWikiWomen all have very
deliberate communication and branding choices behind their names.

If new organizers need help thinking through naming for their own campaigns
-- it's worth exploring the various bits of documentation we are gathering
at: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Campaigns or reaching out to my
colleague Felix Nartey or myself.

Glad that we are thinking publically about how we show up in campaigns :)

Cheers,

Alex Stinson

[Wikimedia-l] Help us organize for #WikiForHumanRights!

2021-03-12 Thread Alex Stinson
Hello all,

We are excited for #WikiForHumanRights -- at the office hours and
afterwards community groups throughout the movement have already connected
with us about organizing. This year we are going to focus on the "right to
a healthy environment" and we need your help!

What can you do?

If you like to organize an event, we have created a list of ideas at:
https://w.wiki/33kh. You can also learn more about kinds of activities from
our last office hour: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_QEE60hcFk Keep in
mind that we are support rapid grants to help you go further by means of
financial support rapid grants will be available through April 15 -- please
apply any time during that window through the application process.

If you are organizing an event, please add it to the table at:
https://w.wiki/35gK

We will also have a content-writing challenge with prizes from April 15 -
May 15 you can learn more about the challenge and sign up for the challenge
at: https://w.wiki/35gE

We also have developed a draft list of articles to be created or enriched
with UN Human Rights: https://w.wiki/33ki . We hope these inspire you to
think about what your community could do to fill the gaps on your wikis
about the right to healthy environment: this could include topics related
to human rights, climate or environmental justice, communities impacted by
environmental health issues, or similar.

We encourage working on Wikipedia and on sister projects: Commons,
Wikidata, Wiktionary ... etc.

If you have a question, you can send us an email (Alex Stinson:
astin...@wikimedia.org, Michel Bakni: mbakni-...@wikimedia.org), or you can
attend the support and mentoring meeting we are organizing on Zoom on at 14:00
(GMT) 18 March 2021. [1]

Subject: WikiForHumanRights at Campaign Team Office Hours and upcoming
WMSusDev meeting
To: Wikimedia Mailing List

Dear Community,

As we announced during December,[1] this year’s WikiForHumanRights campaign
will be arriving for Earth Day this year: April 15-May 15. The theme is
“Right to a Healthy Environment” -- connecting the 20th Birthday “Human”
theme with the global conversations about COVID-19, environmental crisis,
like climate change, and human rights. You can learn more about the theme at
our under-development home page. [2]

The campaign will have two parts: a challenge, like the WikiGap Challenge,
and decentralized digital and in-person events (where COVID-19 risk
assessments allow).

We need your help organizing the decentralized events -- and will be
supporting development of activities through mentoring and rapid grants.

Do you want to be part of organizing? The Campaigns Team at the Wikimedia
Foundation invites you to:

   -

the upcoming Wikimedians for Sustainable Development meeting on 21
   February at 11:00am UTC [3]
   -

Our next virtual office hour on 25 February 2021 at 3:00pm UTC via
   zoom.[4]

If you are interested, but can’t attend the meeting: you can also join the
Wikimedians for Sustainable Development communication channels for general
updates [5] or the WikiForHumanRights telegram channel, where we will share
more updates for organizers [6].

Please forward this information to movement organizers who you think will
be interested.

Looking forward to talking with you soon!

[Wikimedia-l] Help us Communicate #WikiForHumanRights

2019-12-10 Thread Alex Stinson
Hi everyone,

Today, since it's International Human Rights day we’re starting some public
promotion of the #WikiForHumanRights campaign, and we would appreciate your
help in spreading the word!

On social media this week, we’re highlighting community edit-a-thons and
events, facts about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and asking
everyone to reflect on the role of human rights in their own lives. We’ll
be promoting the campaign throughout December and January, so there are
plenty of opportunities to get involved.

If you are interested in sharing the campaign’s messages on social media,
please retweet and share from @Wikipedia and @Wikimedia on Twitter,
Facebook, and Instagram. You can also find draft messages, hashtags, and
campaign gifs in the “communicate and share the campaign!” section of the
campaign page on Meta.[1]

If your local community isn’t yet engaged in the campaign, you can learn
how to organize and get involved online on the Organize page on Meta. [2]

Thanks!

Alex

[Wikimedia-l] WikiForHumanRights Update: Communications tools and a guide for running events

2019-11-19 Thread Alex Stinson
Hello all!

I want to give a brief update on the WikiForHumanRights Campaign which
began its soft launch last Friday! We are already seeing multiple online
events starting and several in person editathons. Special thank you to the
communities in Argentina and Armenia who are already editing! Looking
forward to more activities being shared at
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiForHumanRights/Organize

Also, Wikimedia Argentina created a kit for working with partners to run in
person events for Human Rights! Check it out:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiForHumanRights/Organize#Sensitive

Additionally, we updated the communications toolkit for the campaign at:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiForHumanRights/Share .

We are going to begin increasing Social Media starting around December
10th! As you see the campaign being talked about from @Wikimedia and on the
hashtag #WikiForHumanRights -- we need your help to share it.

If you have any questions or are considering organizing an event, please
let us know.

Cheers,

Alex Stinson

Hello all, and apologies for crossposting!

I hope you are doing well!

As you may have noticed when we announced the partnership in August [1]:
the Wikimedia Foundation is working with the UN Human Rights to help expand
the availability of knowledge about human rights online.

As one of our first collaborations, we are going to be running a campaign
from November 15 - January 30 to add and improve knowledge about human
rights on Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects. The initial focus of the
campaign will be on improving articles about topics related to the UN
Declaration of Human Rights and youth standing up for human rights. More
information about the campaign is also available here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiForHumanRights

We would like to invite you to get involved in the campaign in one of
several ways:

Help us build the list!

   -

We need your help identifying more topics related to youth involved in
human rights that don’t have articles on Wikipedia or could use further
improvement. We would like to represent many different languages and
geographies in the campaign. To propose topics for the list, see
   instructions at:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiForHumanRights/List#Adding_a_topic_to_the_Youth_Lists

Organize an online or offline event!

We need your help finding community leaders from throughout the Wikimedia
to:

   -

Host an online campaign on your language Wikipedia! To learn more about
hosting a local topical campaign see the kit here:
   https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiForHumanRights/Organize#Campaign
   -

Hold an in person editathon with local human rights organizations or
partners! To learn more, check out the kit here:
   https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiForHumanRights/Organize#Editathon

Promote the campaign starting Dec. 10 for International Human Rights Day!

Help us amplify your efforts around the campaign and publicize it to wide
audiences. We’ll be sharing a communications toolkit (including graphics)
soon with suggestions on reaching out to folks about the campaign.

   -

Reach out to local media and supporters: Journalists and the public
can help add momentum to the campaign through storytelling and spreading
  the word.
  -

Promote the campaign on social media: We’ll be using
#WikiForHumanRights to promote the campaign on social media, when we
increase the communication to the public on 10 December

If you want to help in other ways, let us know on the discuss space
#human-rights tag
<https://discuss-space.wmflabs.org/t/do-you-have-questions-about-organizing-for-wikiforhumanrights-let-us-know/1948>

in the Organize sections linked above!

Note: We are still updating the communications assets for the campaign! To
watch for those materials, add

I want to echo Seddon's comment: you are one of the most capable, incisive
and strategic thinkers at the Foundation. Our movement is weaker with the
loss of both your insight and your ability to embody the individual voices
from throughout the movement channelled through your research. You have
created a powerful legacy.

I know you will do amazing things with whatever is next!

So many congratulations John and Wikimedia Sverige team! Its super exciting
the path you are going down with each of the projects! The movement is
going to benefit from that work.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Commons-l] Classification/Categorization games for Commons?

Two thoughts directly to this:

Pushing images into narrower, but still generic, topic areas allows folks
who know more about, for example, ships or dog species or whatever, to
narrow the topic into something specific. We already do this in many ways
within the way folks use the category system on Commons -- it could be done
with structured data as well.

We would also want some type of confidence factor, I would think,
especially if we want the tool to appeal to newer folks in the community --
with less depth of experience working in our information structure.
Zooniverse and other similar visual-identification crowdsourcing projects,
usually have 2-3 volunteers confirm something before adding it directly to
the record.

only the most high profile collections will have good metadata (and one
perceived benefit of sharing GLAM content in public venues is the chance to
enrich metadata, by discovering details about the objects, that previously
the staff didn't know how to recognize). Wikimedia projects are really good
places to get mildly obscure collections (such as archival photos, or
under-researched museum objects) into the context of Wikimedia content.
Moreover, it's really hard to assess how to map these metadata concepts to
Wikimedia categories. We actually saw this come up again and again in the
GLAM stakeholder research for commons:

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Classification/Categorization games for Commons?

2018-06-06 Thread Alex Stinson
Hey Yaroslav and Asaf,

From the SDC team perspective, I think it would definitely be preferable
for such a tool to include/anticipate the need for structured data on
Commons, or default to filling in Depicts and/or other structure data
fields. Building more tools which generate categories by default would
definitely be a bit counter-productive (and hard on multilingual
contributors). One option, might be designing such a tool to work with
Artworks and other unique objects (like photographs) already on Wikidata,
and then have it prepared to hook up with the Wikibase/Structured data
features that will go live on Commons in the fall.

Cheers,

Alex

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Elsevier?

2016-02-18 Thread Alex Stinson
Teemu,

As a followup:

We would love to be more aligned with Open Access publishers, but at this
point, we have yet to find a demonstrably *repeatable* and *scalable* model
of programming which we could promote to the entire movement and the Open
Access community. When OA publishers already set the standard for Open
knowledge, its less clear where to intervene (whereas, supporting GLAM,
EDU, STEM and TWL outreach are about unlocking hard to find or closed
access material for our community to take advantage of).

We do have a relationship with PLOS at WMF:

   - We have been including contacts within PLOS on a collaboration to
improve the Wikimedia ecosystem for citations and research, including
looking at structured data in Wikimedia citations (something we are
beginning to explore with Wikimedia Research, WikiProject X, WikiProject
Source Metadata, WMDE, CrossRef and others). You should hear more about
this in the next 4-6 months, as it becomes actual collaboration among these
   groups.
   - We are also reaching out to PLOS to participate in Dark Traffic
   Research:
   https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Wikimedia_referrer_policy and
they are further connected to us via our relationship with CrossRef.
   - We have had several calls with the PLOS partnerships team as The
Wikipedia Library, and have seen a bit of stalled trying to figure out how
both our community and theirs could benefit from a partnership more
extensive than a WIR or volunteer led content drive, programatically -- and
those kinds of individual leadership roles are outside what we develop at
the WMF (see our criteria for new projects in Program Capacity and
   Learning: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Program_Capacity_and_Learning)
   .

So the question is: what are the best ways to collaborate with Open Access
publishers? And who can lead in these initiatives? We would be happy to
mentor any volunteers or affiliates who want to develop these program
models on behalf of the movement.

If you have ideas, we would encourage sharing them with WikiProject Open
Access (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Open_Access),
or on IdeaLab (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab).

Cheers,

Alex Stinson

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Elsevier?

2016-02-15 Thread Alex Stinson
Hi all,

As always, we are happy to see the conversations about the publishing and
research industry within the Wikimedia community. We very much believe that
our readers, and other researchers, should, whenever possible, have open,
or at least toll-free, access to materials when possible. We share the
open-access communities values, and I highly recommend exploring the two
links shared by Keegan [1] and Pete[2], to better understand our position.

As a matter of transparency: we have provided access to nearly 80 accounts
so far via our Elsevier partnership; we have also distributed access to
over 500 accounts via JSTOR.

These partnerships have been ones which we continue to value and cultivate,
because they are high-demand resources from large percentages of our
volunteer community-- not because of a moral judgement about their business
practices. If there were an overwhelming consensus among our patrons
(editors who have access to those resources), to return their access in
boycott (or to not use it), I can understand and would support that
volunteer effort: after all our community is values-based. However, as long
as we continue to get access requests: building the encyclopedia and our
other free knowledge projects is our first priority, because it unlocks at
least some of the locked content in these databases as summaries in our
projects.

However, we also recognize that these partnerships give us more than just
access, its also gives us opportunities to influence the publishing
industry from the inside. For example, both JSTOR and Elsevier are going to
be part of research into how our https change last June created dark
traffic for research databases, and this work will be giving us access to
referral data that is quite hard to get from anyone in the publishing
industry [3]. With this data from industry leaders, we will better be able
to influence open access, and make arguments for our editors and library
allies to use Wikimedia projects to promote open materials.

As for supporting Sci-Hub: that is an interesting concept from TWL's
perspective of providing access to research for our community. We would be
happy to support community consensus on how to use the tool in our research
processes. Thus far, we have tried to cooperate with established
institutions that work within the existing system to help create long-term
stable versions of academic resources, like partnering closely with
libraries, advocacy and industry groups like CrossRef and SPARC, and
supporting development of tools to create Wikimedia use metrics for the
open-access community (more on this hopefully coming in the next few
months). Sci-hub is a great short term tool for creating pressure for
change in this industry, but the publishing community also needs to figure
out the best long term solutions for creating and persistently accessing
academic work.[4]

As for legal support, that is not within the mission of The Wikipedia
Library, and in my personal opinion, this probably should be pursued
through direct engagement with aligned organizations whose mission is to
promote these efforts: like OKF and SPARC.

Cheers,

[3]https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Wikimedia_referrer_policy
[4] Open access does not solve all the problems of academic publishing. For
example, academic monographs in the humanities and social sciences, for
instance, do cost university presses over 20,000 USD to publish and
maintain persistently available, this amount of money is not readily
available in non-scientific fields. Open access communities still haven't
fully figured out how to solve this problem, when they are crucial to the
output of those academics:
http://www.arl.org/storage/documents/forum15-walters-emerging-models-humanities-publishing.pdf
. Moreover, in my last job, I worked with a William Blake scholar who
worked on a free to use Digital humanities project, but who thought Open
access journals undermined his copyright and the prestige of his
publications in tenure applications. We are still a long way off from
making Open Access, as a long-term solution for academic publishing.

[Wikimedia-l] Help us keep #1lib1ref energized through January 23!

2016-01-13 Thread Alex Stinson
Hi Wikimedians!

The Wikipedia Library is really excited about the #1lib1ref campaign taking
off -- we seem to have found a concept that will excite the global
libraries community to talk more with us, about our common mission: helping
the world get access to reliable knowledge.

Please explore the hashtag on Twitter and other social media: we have
several dozen websites, library organizations, and individuals blog and
reflect on their experience. For example:
https://twitter.com/search?q=%231Lib1Ref . I have included a preview of
some of our tracking below for a sense of our scale.

Please use the campaign to promote the exciting GLAM, research, and
Wikimedia community projects you think librarians would be interested in.

We still need your help:

   -

Keep sharing and emphasizing the hashtag #1lib1ref. Try to pair your
posts with #Wikipedia15 when you can.
   -

Help translate the main page of the campaign into more languages:
   https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref
   -

Note: We use some of the headers and sentences in this page, to
  generate multilingual social media posts.
  -

The campaign technically starts on Friday, but we need to continuously
remind the global libraries community that they a) can start adding
references now, and b) should continue adding references all next week. Oh,
and its not just librarians who are adding references for the campaign --
that's just our target audience :)
   -

Publish blogposts talking about Wikmedia’s opportunities with libraries.
Here are a small sample blog posts that might help inspire your work:
   -

  From our Italian Colleagues :
  http://librarianscape.com/2016/01/09/wikipedia-un-posto-per-bibliotecari/
  -

  From DLF: https://www.diglib.org/archives/11060/
  -

  From our Catalan colleagues:

http://blogcrai.ub.edu/2016/01/13/el-crai-de-la-universitat-de-barcelona-sadhereix-a-la-campanya-1lib1ref/
  -

Reach out to the librarians using the hashtag: some of them are even
hosting lunch gatherings, or small editing events that engage library
staffs. These librarians are potential leaders for local events and
   GLAM-Wiki activities.

If successful, we hope to run a similar campaign next year, with more
direction and leadership from a volunteer committee (this year we decided
to move quick, and test the concept alongside #Wikipedia15 ). If you are
interested in helping organize, let us know at
wikipedialibr...@wikimedia.org .

Give feedback on the campaign and resources that would be helpful for next
years campaign on the talk page on meta :
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref

Thank you so much for those who have already stepped up to lead on social
media and translating the meta page!

What impact are we seeing?

We are tracking several different elements of this campaign:

   -

Usage of the hashtag in social media -- over 600 tweets have used the
hashtag since January 4. We are also tracking the hashtag on facebook and
linkedin -- both of which are major networks for librarians.
   -

Our facebook event is beginning to spread -
   https://www.facebook.com/events/975178119187954/ -- please invite more
   people from your library networks
   -

Page views - we are seeing between 400-600 pageviews, with nearly 7000
views in the last month on the English Version of the campaign page, and
Italian, French and Spanish are seeing 40-60 views a day. Moreover,
Catalans page, which is on ca.wikipedia, has seen over 2000 visits in the
   last month:
   http://stats.grok.se/ca/latest/Viquiprojecte:Bibliowikis/1Lib1Ref
   -

We are beginning to see hashtag used on English Wikipedia’s edit
   summaries http://tools.wmflabs.org/hashtags/search/1lib1ref . Based on
other social media discussions, we think this represents <60% of the
   activity so far.
   -

We are working with Stephen LaPorte to help the tool support top 20
language Wikipedias, and Wikipedias like Romanian where we know community
members are sharing the campaign. Let us know if you don’t think your
language will be in that group.
  -

A new phabricator item has been -- it would be incredibly useful for
other kinds of campaigns: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T123529 .
Please leave feedback and use cases.
