[Wikimedia-l] Wiki of functions naming contest

Hello all,

Please help pick a name for the new Wikimedia wiki project.
This project will be a wiki where the community can work together on a
library of functions.[1] The community can create new functions, read
about them, discuss them, and share them. Some of these functions will
be used to help create language-independent Wikipedia articles that
can be displayed in any language, as part of the Abstract Wikipedia
project. But functions will also be usable in many other situations.

There will be two rounds of voting, each followed by legal review of
candidates, with broad voting beginning on 29 September and 27
October. Our goal is to have a final project name selected on 8

I think you might be referring to the links in the 3rd and 4th line of
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:Lists_of_Wikipedias ?
Looking more closely, it appears that the "speakers per article" listing is
unfortunately a few years out of date, as the column of "Speakers" was
being manually updated from Ethnologue stats (which are now paywalled).
I've started a tangential discussion on the talkpage there, about using
Wikidata instead.
Additionally, none of those links contain the "primary / secondary
language" statistics, for which I think we'd need to cross-reference with
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_languages_by_total_number_of_speakers
(https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1394450) Or perhaps Wikidata can resolve it
again, as at least some languages' items include a split of the statistics
for that, e.g. Q150. Let's discuss further onwiki?

And +1 to the overall recommendation from C. Scott. :)

This has been on our departments' minds for the past few months. Since the
beginning of the pandemic, we have been changing our campaign schedules
(including shortening the Italian campaign) and steadily revising our
messaging. We are closely monitoring reader and donor feedback, responding
to what we hear, and making adjustments as we go. There is a lot of
interest in fundraising right now and how we adapt in the current
environment and going forward (including amongst Affiliates and closely
related external orgs whom we talk to). It’s uncertain when things will go
back to “normal” so it is important we start learning how to fundraise in
this environment. We are working on a plan to share more information and
updates. Our team is working with limited capacity right now so these
deeper updates may not happen right away, but we are making this a priority.

We'd also like to acknowledge GerardM’s point about giving people an
opportunity to give, and note that we’re also hearing this from some donors
- Some are giving because they are now realizing the huge value of the
projects. These are some examples we can share:

"I was prompted quite a few times to donate but so far I always rejected
even if it didn't feel right. Probably this virus situation made me more
aware of my environment; what's important and what's not."

"I give because I appreciate that there is even a Wikipedia. Solid
information ties in with our hope and is key to calming these uncertain
times. Thanks again. Stay well and safe."

"We need Wikipedia, and if everyone give some, well you know... In Norway
we have a special word for this act... "dugnad" (when everyone contributes,
it will not be so big efforts for a few) Like we have this corona situation
now. We must help each other, take care of each other, and do what the
governments tell us to do. Then the virus will go away much faster."

"I really got into the Internet in 1995 with my 1st home PC…I never thought
that one day, the global network would be our life-saving resource facing a
global health crisis...You and all the Wikimedia teams do a TERRIFIC work.
Wikipedia is the single most important website."

My apologies John for my overly basic initial response. I wanted to note
that regarding the banner design [1] we’ve definitely heard and taken the
feedback on board as a team. Our design team discussed it on Monday and are
exploring ways in which we might iterate on this in future tests.

We are always sympathetic about any potential impact that fundraising
campaigns have on reader experience. This is why we use tools to limit
impressions seen by readers, limit traffic or campaign length, and only
send a limited number of emails to past donors. Most non-profits and pretty
much every other online fundraising model involves running campaigns all
year around, all the time.

Regarding this related issue both Sam and you brought up about the use of
cookies in Central Notice and exploring the usage of hash id’s. It’s an
interesting idea but certainly one fraught with potential public
misconceptions along with ethical and technical challenges. Even with
navigating those I’m not sure Fundraising is really the team to take a lead
on this kind of device fingerprinting within MediaWiki and falls well
outside our team’s area of responsibility and expertise. There are also big
changes expected in the way browsers provide the necessary information so
we are going to need to see how this comes out in the wash. Either way,
we’ve created a phabricator ticket to facilitate future discussion about
this topic.[2]

Hi John, thank you for the feedback.

The banners you see are continually changing, as we refine our designs
based on feedback and efficacy. Donation banners are inherently disruptive,
on any site. We try to minimize the annoyance whilst also maximizing the
effectiveness in order to show as few banners as possible. It's a difficult
balance, and feedback like yours, and the emails and comments we get from
readers, help us out over time.

If you don’t want to see fundraising banners, there are a few options: You
can login to Wikipedia, or click the "close" button in a banner, or visit
our donor thank you page.[1]

If you're browsing in a private-window, this means the browser cannot
remember (save in a cookie) that you clicked "close" or saw the banner
already, hence you might be seeing more banners than most readers would.

Hi MZMcBride,

You are right that it's unusual for us to display any banners on English
Wiki in the USA at this time of year.

We wanted to do a thorough evaluation of our backend systems and receive
some live data on our banners, which we have been adjusting to be sensitive
during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Along with other analysis, we use brief tests to collate necessary data to
inform future projections. Given the significant global changes over the
last few months we felt it vital to gather this now to help inform annual
and long term planning for the WMF, and by extension the broader movement.
These tests will only be running for 1-3 hours and the current expectation
is to run a couple of additional brief tests in the next few weeks.

Just also to note I am currently replacing Seddon as the community liaison
for the Advancement department, whilst he is working with the Product
department. This handover is ongoing. I did leave a note on the English
Wikipedia village pump before the test [1] and I will make sure the
CentralNotice calendar is updated to reflect our known planned fundraising
activities.

desktops; e.g. adding new accessibility & usability improvements/options;
etc), balanced with the technical requirements of efficiency given our
current software "stacks".

We're planning on adding/tweaking/changing elements in the UI slowly and
carefully, so that editors can keep on efficiently editing, and readers
(and editors implicitly!) can slowly get a clearer/better reading

There are /many/ ideas for subtle or significant improvements listed in the
project pages (don't get distracted by just the first image in the
slideshow!), and probably more good ideas we're still missing.
Anyone's feedback (hopefully nuanced and friendly) and further

Yes, please do update / improve the documentation.

If it's a major topic and after searching you cannot find anything central,
then perhaps start out by creating a disambiguation / linkhub  for the
pages that you can find, and expand from there - that way you can try to
make sure you've found all the existing pages to begin with, and don't
start off by accidentally re-inventing the wheel (portal)! We have a lot of
historic link-lists / portals that are started and then abandoned and then
accidentally reinvented elsewhere a few years later.

This is a long thread, with a somewhat confusing first post.  One of
the core ideas I can pull out of it, is along the lines of: "we should
have more dynamically variable content for different audiences/needs".
I.e. For any given topic: Some people want the 10 word version, Some
people want the 2 sentence version, Some people want the 2 paragraph
version, Some people want the 2,000 word version, Some people want the
20,000 word version, and Some people want the n-subarticles version.

This is a broad set of ideas that has come up regularly over our
history. It has obvious connections to Wiktionary and Wikidata for the
shortest "versions". It has obvious connections to the spectrum of
Mergism to Seperatism.[1] It has obvious connections to manual of
style guidelines about intro/lead-sections.[2] It has obvious
connections to Simple Wikipedia and the various
adapted-for-kids/schools versions (WikiJunior, Vikidia, and many
more). It has obvious connections to different display/consumption
types (widescreen vs tablet vs phone vs audio).

The first two version-types have been proposed, or implemented, in
various forms many times. A few years ago I made a summary table of
the existing variations, in an attempt to stop the
wheel-reinvention.[3]

Making complex content be /dynamically variable/ in length, has also
been tried externally before. As I wrote in an earlier Strategy
discussion:
"For example, The Encyclopedia of Life had an interesting "complexity
slider" interface in their early versions, that let readers set how
complex or scientific/formal they wanted their content [See ancient

and the preferences panel that let the reader restrict the content to
"Authoritative sources only" youtube -

10 year old person doesn't (always/often) benefit from the same
content as a PhD, and we want to help both. The books The Diamond Age
and Ender's Game contained the idea of software that auto-adapted to
suit the educational needs of the user. To me that's the final goal,
and it's a long way off, but we can make steps and experiments towards
it."[4]

Sadly, EoL removed that feature and I don't know why; perhaps due to
software complexity or perhaps due to the complexity for authors of
writing different versions. I do think dynamic content is an
incredibly important goal that we should work towards, but I also
think we're already in midst of many incredibly important and vastly
complex goals and I suspect we don't have the capacity to scale to
encompass many more simultaneously. However, Eventualism is
(generally) what got us to where we are, and is likely what will get
us to where we want/need to be.

TLDR: I hope some people collaborate on a wikipage to write down the
various ways a dynamic content system might technically work, so that
we can analyze the pros/cons of each method more efficiently than in a
tangent-filled email thread. I hope we eventually have a glorious
scifi future where the computers automagically adapt content,
neutrally(!), to best fit our individual needs in the moment. I hope
we can figure out a smooth transition path to move everyone happily
towards that long-term future goal, perhaps as part of the Strategy
discussions. I hope nobody attempts to get it all done too soon. ;-)

The results from past research are Not easy to summarize, and
definitely not that simple, because of all the varying factors in both
the templates and the research projects.
E.g. message-length/-linkcount/-tone/-formatting (all of which slowly
change over the years), the reason/timing for receiving a welcome
(account-creation, first-edit, random edit, time-after-event), whether
anything else was communicated around the same time (e.g. additional
warning templates) on the same page or elsewhere, whether the welcome
was personalized at all, what username it was signed with (a human
name in my language, a funny avatar name, a generic bot-name, etc),
etc -- all of which can be different (subtly or significantly) at
every project and every instance).

TL;DR: Onboarding is complicated.
Many people are helped by welcome messages.
Many welcome messages are (or were) imperfect (too
long/dense/formal/informal/irrelevant/technical/etc).
I do not know if there is any specific research that focuses purely on
the timing (whether it is best to send at account-creation, after
first-edit, after human-review of an edit, whilst the user is
logged-in or offline, etc), but I agree it might be useful.

- it's better than nothing, because some people will Not edit until

accounts-made-locally (i.e. likely to be able to read Arabic) vs
accounts-attached-via-Single-User-Login (and to only send those latter
accounts a welcome message, after they've made 1 edit locally). I

My mistake, there is a one line reference to Wikipedia in the lyrics.
(The time_continue parameter didn't work on my first play through, but

Sidenote: the WikiProject itself does exist on other languages/projects:

but this particular contribution drive is only focused on English
Wikipedia. I imagine it would be significantly harder to coordinate an
equivalent endeavor across multiple languages/communities
simultaneously. Perhaps other languages could set up something similar
for themselves?

The whimsical computer game/sandbox-toy ''Everything'',[1] which I think is
a cross between the video ''Powers of Ten'',[2] and the game ''Katamari
Damacy''.[3] It's a whimsical walking simulator, in which you change
size-scales (photon to galaxy), collect and transform between hundreds of
entity types, and listen to occasional speech excerpts from Alan Watts and
a pleasant long instrumental soundtrack.

Relevance: It has an "autoplay" mode, which essentially transforms it into
a wonderful screensaver. That autoplay mode includes a "documentary-mode"
feature, which adds text descriptions. Many of those descriptions come from

Hi Kerry,
The short answer is yes! the Collaboration Team is working now to extend
the new user interface so that it includes all the existing features on the
Recent Changes page, Watchlist and a few related pages—along with some new
tools users are requesting. We’re doing user testing right now of this
extended functionality (which includes things like Namespace filters, Tag
filters, User filters and, possibly, a Category filter).
When we have it all working the way it should, we plan to bring the new UI
and tools to Watchlist. This should happen in the next few months.

However, it is also already possible to add a "On [my] watchlist" filter or
highlight, to the results on the recent changes page.

Haha! Yes, at Wikimania, various people from a few Northern European
countries commented on the habit in some cultures (particularly North
American) of frequently using superlatives. The tangential example that I
immediately thought of, is the song from The Lego Movie, "Everything Is
Awesome".

I was initially thinking of it more as a guide to clearly-written (and
empathetically-read) communication, but yes, presentations are also

I think I understand what you mean, but I'd suggest that this is a perfect
example of what the article is about.
You have focused on the word-choice of "compassion", and a specific
definition of that word. We could instead, interpret the intent of the
author more towards the definition of "empathy" or "consideration". The
article could (should! AGF!) instead be more generously interpreted, to be
about cross-language communication in general, and to understand that it
was simply written by someone who uses English as their primary language
hence it approaches the issue from that perspective.

I.e. The same advice all applies if you work/communicate in a group that
uses [Japanese] as the primary language, but some of the participants are
not native [Japanese] speakers.

So, I'd reword your conclusion, as "we have to be empathetic (or
considerate) towards people for whom our native language (whatever that may
be) is not their own."

It is tough to consider that it is not so much the words that are used but

Exactly! :-)  We should be careful about spending too much effort arguing
about the nuances of word choice, especially in informal discussions
(versus drafting a policy or writing code or similar, where word-choice can
be crucial!), and instead try to interpret what other people are
saying/writing, with an assumption of positive intent.

about 75% of goals to be a success. Organizations that are meeting 100% of
their goals are not typically setting aggressive goals."
Note that partial successes are not also represented, if one just checks
the overview result; it's a simple binary system. See the textual notes for
details about partial successes within individual goals.
Plus, not reaching that 75% target of completely-successful goals, is
perhaps also attributable to the intense and widespread stress of that time
period...

I've just tested, and the notifications popup window is working for me in
both Chrome and Chromium (and Firefox, my default). If you can still
reproduce this problem, please could you either submit a bug-report to
phabricator, or start a thread at the feedback page,[1] or send them to me
offlist? (With details on your browser/OS versions, any javascript blocking
browser extensions you might use, and if possible what errors you see in
browser console.[2])

as a goal?
Are you looking for something to help MediaWiki development become more
accessible, or simply for anything related to online accessibility?  Or
offline, too?

If MediaWiki: There's a compilation of the core links at

If general online accessibility: You might be looking for something like
the work by FLOE and GPII and IDRC. eg
http://www.floeproject.org/prefsEditors.html (click the top-right "Show

If general accessibility: I'm not sure, beyond googling for it.

T​o clarify: Starting in October, Flow will be maintained; it's not being
abandoned. Further work on the discussion system will need to be driven by
communities voicing their desire for further work on it. Additional
development on the discussion system will be prioritized on community
request and on a project by project basis.

As a pattern that we're all familiar with, it's more likely that people
will comment when they have negative or critical feedback, particularly at
a centralized forum. While it's helpful to point out things that are not
user-friendly or are frustrating to use, it's also helpful for the team to
know what is going well - so we can do more of it. I’d like to encourage
people to speak up (here or onwiki) when there's positive feedback as well
– this goes for article-editors as much as software-developers. There are
people on many wikis who have been happily using Flow, but they haven't
gone out of their way to broadcast that information off of their usual home
wiki. What do you like about this software? Is it headed in the right
direction, even if it doesn’t seem complete? Are there things about it that
the Collaboration team could continue to focus on?

A tip/request, for 2 perennial frustrations, re:
* Usage of quite long (e.g. 5+ linebreaks) email-signatures, without the
proper delimiter
* Use of embedded or attached images in email-signatures.


1) Many email clients (including gmail) respect the usage of
"-- "
(*2 dashes, and a space, on a blank line*)
to isolate signature blocks.[1]
It will either auto-collapse the signature, or lighten the text color.
Please add this to the top of your email signature!
(Example at bottom.)


2) Unnecessary images in emails, which require extra downloading on mobile,
plus some users have images-disabled in email (to prevent tracking-images
from spammers, etc) so they just show as empty "placeholders".
Please consider removing any images from your email signature!

I asked if anyone could point me to examples of "how fast do screenreaders
actually read", a few months ago.[1] The best examples I could find at the

Searching a few days ago, I learned that the average speed that experienced
users generally use is 250-400 wpm, and that the default settings are
around 180wpm.
(Note: Users seem to typically talk about the speed they use in terms of x%
of maximum, rather than wpm, e.g. "I've got 63% with rate boost, and
rising.  I used to think 75% with JAWS was fast, but not anymore.  I'm just
turning it 1% faster every couple days, and I'm doing it because I can."

I believe this is partially through the long-term efforts of: our
developers who have an understanding of accessibility issues, and our few
blind editors and many sight-impaired editors who give regular feedback and
bugreports.[3] Immense kudos to all of them.

I assume you mean "assigning *mass*" to the pixels. Weight is so Earth-centric!

I would like to join the kawaii-pixel WikiProject. Please let me know
when we start debating the relative merits of various color models,
and naming conventions, and kawaii-challenged accessibility tools.

Re: HTML-preview: I suspect I've misunderstood that section of the Medium
post (I thought he was coming at it from a debugger angle, but possibly
not). Now that I re-read it, I think maybe he's just asking for
"synchronous scrolling & selection-highlighting" in the side-by-side
preview?

We already have many of these components (requested in the medium post, or
in the image), as needed for editing an article:
* Syntax highlighter

(gadget)
* Ajax preview (A few options. I've used user:js/ajaxPreview
 for many years and love
it and strongly recommend it)
* Split preview (side-by-side)
 (although
that doesn't have simultaneous scrolling, which would be fancy/nice. Also
the width-drag doesn't seem to work. It probably just needs an update after
6 years..)
* integrating the diff viewer with the syntax highlighted source text,
sounds incredibly confusing, so let's not do that. Besides, we have ajax
Show Changes.
* We have a Section-edit link, for jumping to the right section
* We have a Template/Page transclusion list, under the edit-source textarea

We don't have HTML preview, which might be interesting. Surely it's
possible to whip up a userscript for it, if anyone would actually find it
massively useful. (Or, we can just leave the browser's own Web Developer
bar open to see the HTML. ctrl-f is our friend.)

It would be nice to get some of those userscripts turned into
(global)Gadgets and/or Extensions, but they're all usable.
The only thing they (and all our fancy optional extras) really need, is
better visibility. There are a number of ideas to do that, at
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Requests_for_comment/Redesign_user_preferences
and (especially the bottom of) it's talkpage. More ideas appreciated.

mailing list <https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/ee>, some time
soon, to nudge at this. :)

Wikiprojects are the current solution for this. On the talkpage of most
articles (at Enwiki) are WikiProject Banners, which link to related hubs
for coordination of topic-based work. Eg.

find the editors participating across broad ranges of articles.
There is some interest in investigating better ways of matching editors to
