a bunch of special hardware to hang it and a dehydrator or nitrogen system to 
keep it dry.

I just don't picture the WRAP board group buying waveguide

 Remember that for every 6dB in loss you lose half your transmit and 
 receive
 range.  So with 34 ft of RG 8 instead of 5 miles you get 2.5.  So use
 whatever cable you can get away with and still have the performance you
 need.  If you need every miliwatt to be useful then use coax only as a 
 short
 jumper.

I would never use coax for 5.8 period.  Not unless you are only going a few
feet.
LMR900 can be used for up to 50 feet.  It is better than 1/2 heliax.  But
really, you gotta use waveguide if you are going any distance at all.

Chuck,
Vegetation might have a huge impact on the coverage area.  I've seen  
pictures of your area, it looks like heaven to me.  My experience is  
that the first two trees will eat up a 5.8 signal, so expanding the  
coverage area by 80% just adds another tree or two.

It might be very sensible for Kurt (?) to use the coax rather than  
put a little more signal into a bunch of foliage.

That is not what I was commenting on.  You made the following blanket
statement regarding radio links and waveguide:

That is the statement YOU made with your 5 million years of experience. THAT
statement could not be father from the truth. There are other choices and
they are more cost effective.

THAT was the statement that would seriously confuse the less educated
population regarding the wireless/RF part of the WISP installation. And when
I talk about less educated I don't mean someone is stupid.  I mean they do
not have or have a very limited knowledge base regarding RF and read this
list for information. For anyone that doesn't know better they could think
the only way they can make a link work is to use eliptical waveguide. And
that is incorrect.

There are tens of thousands of links running on Heliax/LMR cable and I am
NOT talking IF freq here. I'm talking RF out to the antenna.

And BTW.My theory of WORK is it does what it is advertised to do with
20 dB of fade regardless of freq band.

I would never use coax for 5.8 period.  Not unless you are only going a few 
feet.
LMR900 can be used for up to 50 feet.  It is better than 1/2 heliax.  But 
really, you gotta use waveguide if you are going any distance at all.

I hate radios at the top of the tower so I'd like to run coax cables
to an enclosure at the bottom and add amps to make up for the loss.
I'm looking for a 9 mile link. The drop is 150 feet. At any rate, I
found an old RG8/U cable. Will that work on 5GHz? I also have LMR400?
If not, what would you recommend?

 found an old RG8/U cable. Will that work on 5GHz? I also have LMR400?

LMR 400 will work.

If you really want to lower your loss, use eliptical
waveguide, but be prepared for a very high cost.

I have and still do, in some cases, long, (100ft+), cable runs.  LMR-400 
is the minimum cable size for that on 2.4GHz.  You will need an amp.

At 5GHz, I would expect LMR-600 or better.  However, at 5GHz, I think I 
would go with tower top radios.  I doubt that you will get good results 
at 5GHz with that kind of cable run.

RG8 cable is useless for anything we do as wisps.
