Hi Robert, I saw the words 32bit Gentoo, and I happen to have such an installation on an old Pentium4. Updating took a while (mainly the stable profile; optimization: nothing special)... after that I created over 60 workspaces, but I can't crash it. Everything seems to work fine. The first (read-only) box indicates the window hint requested by the program. The second one is a tristate check box, that can be changed to override it. Some programs (GNOME/GTK?) might need it to run correctly under Window Maker. (See also the Help balloon, when hovering the first check box. It can also be used to remove the resize bar on some Window Maker panels, as they can't be resized currently. To turn the resize bar off in those panels by default, would look better imho: WPrefs panel, Color panel, and the panels for opening images/directories/programs. Frisian translation
Hi, Because it was pretty easy to translate and fun to do, I finished this translation based on the Dutch language files already in Window Maker. The structure of the sentences are mostly the same as in Dutch, so I could use search & replace a lot. The Fryske Akademy has got some very good translation tools and error checking online, which helped debugging it. For the rest I followed my own (mainly passive, but good) knowledge of Frisian. Frisian is the closest little cousin of the English language (according to Wikipedia), and it's the mother language of Doutzen Kroes. Software translations into Frisian are appreciated by a relatively small group of people. On the other hand, it could be a reason on it's own for people to install Window Maker. Other software with Frisian translations are Gnome, KDE, Firefox among others. Carlos, would you add this to Window Maker? I think the files are good enough to be used by anyone. [PATCH] WPrefs: creating more space for translations
Making some wasted pixels available in the Options section of Icon
Preferences, by redividing the heights and vertical offsets.
The reason is that one or more translations may easily become
larger, and will automatically be wrapped to a second line. In the
current situation, those two lines appear more or less stripped,
depending on the font size. The upper and/or lower part of the fonts
become invisible, which make them hard to read. It's ugly also.
Currently the Dutch and other translations benefit from this
change.

Kind regards, Also, in wmaker-0.95.5 (and probably earlier), sometimes 2 GNUstep application menus are visible at the same time. Both can be moved etc. I can't give a reproducible example. It seems to happen just "sometimes". Double clicking the appicons returns to the normal behaviour of 1 application menu at a time. Same for clicking `Deselect', then it doesn't change to `Select' (the window must have been selected before miniaturizing to try that). After deminiaturizing, the `Deselect' menu entry can be seen in the window menu, when it's not selected. Then to select the window, it must be pressed twice. patches from me ;-) - but I get this unusual error when running `make'
manually to create the .pot file for WPrefs. Note that the//non-ascii
cédille is in the same WPrefs.app/Icons.c, but that could be coincidence.

Adding `--from-code=UTF-8' solves it. Strangely I don't get this error
in the build log, when installing WindowMaker through the build system.
I'm using a modified live ebuild for git from Gentoo's GNUstep overlay,
but this only configures the desired languages, and leaves the rest to
WindowMaker:

Catch-up and some improvements of the Dutch .po files
Recently added msgid's were translated, and some existing translations
improved. As development is done in git 'next', strings from wmaker-0.95.6 will
be remained at the end of the files, so they are backward compatible.

[PATCH] The 4 newly added Dutch translation files don't install yet

I'm not very happy with the result though. Some things just can't be translated. For example, your dictionary (in the usual sense) may say that 'entry' translates to 'ingang', but in 'passwd entry' it means something entirely different: an item in a list. "Ingang" has more than 1 meaning according to vandale.nl: it also means the English "entry" as an item in a list. It's quite normal to use 'entry' with this meaning in English, but for some words used in 'computerese' that is not the case. They refer to very specific things, and translating them literally just doesn't work. For example, changing 'dictionary' into 'woordenboek' in the example above won't improve it. New-translation-into-Dutch-for-Window-Maker
A while ago, I posted new Dutch translation files to this list, hoping that Dutch-speaking list members would like to comment. Probably there are none who can read it. Also, I see that adding files is done by git patches, and not plain files. Meanwhile I didn't sit still, and did another round of checking and rewriting the files. A lot of minor changes are done, improving consistency, fix typos, recheck the user interface, find better words, checking obscure messages in source to get the point. Overall, I think the translations improved a lot, and are very good now, if I may say. I tried to stay as close as possible to the English texts (style and meaning). Although in general people from Belgium and the Netherlands understand English very well, I think most will prefer the user interface to be in their own language. It just feels more natural. Especially for people who are not so much into computing like we do (members of the household for instance). I would kindly request to apply these patches, and let them be tested in the wild.
