ListMom has been unemployed for 10 months. Lots of interviews, and good
feedback on said interviews, but companies get halfway through the search
process and abruptly stop it. I guess they'd rather keep overworking the
people they have - because what are said people going to do? Quit?

Wake me when the recession's over...

[DEADPOOL] Boldly Gone

2008-12-19 Thread Rose Ellen Auerbach
LA Times:

Majel B. Roddenberry, wife of 'Star Trek' creator, dies

By Dennis McLellan
December 19, 2008

Majel Barrett Roddenberry, the widow of "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry
and an actress whose longtime association with the "Star Trek" franchise
included playing Nurse Christine Chapel in the original series, died early
Thursday morning. She was 76.

Roddenberry died at her home in Bel-Air after a battle with leukemia, said
family spokesman Sean Rossall.

"She was a valiant lady," Leonard Nimoy, who played Mr. Spock on "Star
Trek," told The Times. "She worked hard, she was straightforward, she was
dedicated to 'Star Trek' and Gene, and a lot of people thought very highly
of her."

Once dubbed "The First Lady of 'Trek' " by the Chicago Tribune, Majel
(sounds like Mabel) Barrett Roddenberry was associated with "Star Trek" from
the beginning.

In the first TV pilot, she played a leading role as Number One, the first
officer who was second in command.

But at the request of various executives, changes were made, and she did not
reprise her role in the second TV pilot. Instead, she played the minor role
of Nurse Chapel when the series began airing on NBC in September 1966.
Roddenberry had another distinction: Beginning with the original series, she
supplied the coolly detached voice of the USS Enterprise's computer --
something she did on the various "Star Trek" series.

She also was the voice of the Starship Enterprise for six of the 10 "Star
Trek" movies that have been released, as well as the 11th, which is due out
next year.

Roddenberry also played Dr. Christina Chapel in two of the "Star Trek"
movies, "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" and "Star Trek: The Voyage Home."

And she played the recurring role of the flamboyant Lwaxana Troi on "Star
Trek: The Next Generation" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine."

Roddenberry, whose pre-"Star Trek" acting career included guest appearances
on series such as "The Untouchables" and "The Lucy Show," had no idea she
was establishing a career path in science fiction when she took her first
"Star Trek" role.

"Not at all," she said in a 2002 interview with the Tulsa World. "I
certainly didn't have any idea that I'd be doing it this long, for so many
different shows and films -- especially as a product of a series that was a
flop. The original was only on for three years. It wasn't considered a
success by anyone's standards."

The show took off as a pop-culture phenomenon after it went into
syndication, however, and Roddenberry, who was married to Gene Roddenberry
from 1969 until his death in 1991, attended her first "Star Trek" convention
in 1972.

"You know, when the conventions started out, I'd attend four or five a
month," she said in the 2002 interview. "But after a while, it got where
there was no time for anything else. You'd just travel from city to city,
making the same speech, answering the same questions."

Rossall said both Gene and Majel Roddenberry maintained warm relationships
with "Star Trek" fans. And as late as August, he said, Majel Roddenberry
attended a "Star Trek" convention in Las Vegas.

As she told the Buffalo City News in 1998, "It's been a hell of a ride."

Born Majel Hudec in Columbus, Ohio, on Feb. 23, 1932, she attended the
University of Miami and acted in regional theater before heading to
Hollywood in the late '50s.

Several years after her husband's death, Roddenberry discovered a pilot
script and notes he had written for a series in the '70s.

And in 1997, with Majel Barrett Roddenberry as an executive producer and
playing a recurring role, "Gene Roddenberry's Earth: Final Conflict" began
airing in syndication. She later was an executive producer of the syndicated
"Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda."

She is survived by her son, Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry Jr.

Roddenberry had a love of animals and was dedicated to animal rescue.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests donations in her name to Precious
Paws, www.preciouspaws.org, or CARE (Cat & Canine Assistance, Referral and
Education), www.care4pets.org.

Funeral and memorial service details are pending.

Awesome. I'll take it, then. Er, assuming they're open to telecommuting. Are
they open to telecommuting? 'Cause I'm a really good content specialist, but
I'm allergic to cold.

I just participated in a focus group meant to determine what kind of
industries entertainment-field creatives might be interested in working in.
Take-away: "Does it have a living wage and health benefits? Don't care what
the industry is. Sign me the hell up."

I don't think that's quite what they were looking to hear, but I got my
participation incentive anyway.

Re: hey, Left Coasters. What's happening at Berzerkley?

2009-09-25 Thread Rose Ellen Auerbach
Every time UC student fees (read: tuition) are hiked, students protest. In
the past, faculty have been sympathetic, but school proceeds as usual.

So you know how California has this whole budget crisis thing going on? The
UC Regents decided to deal with it by raising student fees by 45% over two
years. This means that for in-state students, fees will go up over $10,000 -
not including books, housing, etc. (I don't have the numbers for
out-of-state students, but since they already pay something comparable to
what they'd pay at a private university, it can't be pretty.)

That may not sound high compared to a private school, but UCs are supposed
to represent an affordable, high-quality educational option for California
students. Current students are understandably worried about suddenly having
to come up with more money, and faculty and staff are finally starting to
worry about losing great low- and middle-income students to schools that can
offer realistic financial aid packages.

There are a slew of service employee and grad student issues, too. But
that's another post for when I'm more awake.

Re: [TRADES] In DC, the 11pm news is beating Leno

2009-10-06 Thread Rose Ellen Auerbach
The affiliates might be pissed, but NBC isn't going to care. Compared to the
hour-long dramas that have traditionally filled NBC's 10pm slot, Leno's show
costs almost nothing to produce. NBC will stick with Leno until advertisers
refuse to pay the ad rates and said rates fall enough that 5 prime time
hours of Leno per week is no longer profitable. Check back in about a year
for signs of cracks.

Or just keep an eye on deadlinehollywooddaily.com. Nikki Finke never misses
a chance to illustrate the idiocy of Jeff Zucker and the people who keep him
in decision-making positions. Which is not a criticism of Nikki Finke.

Re: [BREAKING] Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize

2009-10-09 Thread Rose Ellen Auerbach
Seriously, I can't wait to hear the GOP reaction to this. While the opening
sentence or two will be innocuous enough, I'm thinking there's a 63% chance
that the word "poopyheads" will appear by the twelfth paragraph.

The 2012 ads are going to be awesome, too. "The rest of the world likes
Obama so much that they gave him a prize. Wouldn't you rather be feared than
liked?"

Re: (SOAP NOISE)--The Young and the Restless Exit

2009-10-09 Thread Rose Ellen Auerbach
Top-rated show in daytime? It's not getting chopped.

Sony's been trying to make its soaps cut budgets for years now. "Days" took
care of it in one fell swoop by axing two of its highest-paid leads. Y&R
wants to keep everyone, so they started with the pay cuts. A lot of actors
were willing to take a little less at contract time, but this mid-contract
thing is just bizarre. If memory serves, most soap contracts are structured
in 13-week cycles, but those are more for the purpose of taking actors
off-contract.

Eric Braeden will be back. It'll take some months, but this is -- as I'm
sure a friend of mine in the production office is eye-rolling as we speak --
Eric being Eric. He likes to work, and I frankly can't see anyone else
hiring Mr. Mumbles long-term.

(I try to get out, but they keep pulling me back in...)

Check with the Paley Center (formerly the Museum of Television and Radio).
Their online collection search is kind of wonky, but it lists quite a few
episodes.

Wait, what? You actually want to watch them? That's another story. In most
cases, you need to go to one of the museum locations. Never hurts to ask,

Well, of course "O'Brien's own ratings performance in the 'Tonight Show'
time slot has been very disappointing." Low Leno ratings --> lower local

Conan has the numbers that count: on Friday, he outdrew Letterman in the
18-49 demo by about 50%.

Re: Buckle up... it's going to be a bumpy night...

2010-11-02 Thread Rose Ellen Auerbach
I'm calling it (but only here): GOP takes the House by about five seats.
House reverts to Democratic control in 2012, when half the Tea Partiers who
actually thought they could make a difference run afoul of Behnor and Cantor
a collective one too many times and decide not to run for re-election; and
most of the rest are voted out for not changing the country in two years'
time.

GOP pickup of about three in the Senate. People are willing to take a flyer
on crazy for a two-year House term, but the six-year term will give people
pause.

When aggregated from all races across the country, the electorate will be
split 50-50 down party lines. The more out-there the exit poll question, the
more likely it will be to have exactly 20% agreement from those canvassed.

In the end, the news narrative will be, "We were right, but not as right as
we thought we were going to be. What's up with that, voters? Don't you know
you're supposed to play along?"

In other words, the usual.

bartender in the west L.A. mattress district. He'll make sure we're all too
liquored up to care about being dead.

Re: [DEADPOOLWATCH] Taxi To The Cemetary

2011-05-28 Thread Rose Ellen Auerbach
At the risk of being all name-droppy... I met Jeff and his girlfriend Vikki
(familiar to anyone who saw "Celebrity Rehab") at a party over the holidays.
He was in bad shape. Jeff reminded me of my uncle after he had a series of
strokes: One minute he'd be demanding attention and need help getting
himself to the bathroom; the next, he wanted to be left alone; the next,
he'd wander off somewhere and Vikki would have to track him down.

So, sad, but I can't same I'm surprised.

Vikki was actually quite nice and surprisingly sane. I think she genuinely
loved him, but she also loved the attention she got for taking care of him
(or enabling him, depending on your point of view).

To boldly go... out to dinner, maybe?

2011-10-17 Thread Rose Ellen Auerbach
Legion of Substitute Anchors member Dan Kloeffler, posting on ABC News'
"Advice" block this morning.

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/lifestyle/2011/10/to-boldly-go/

To Boldly Go...

Kind of a big moment for me while filling in on World News Now, which is by
far the most fun you can legally have at 3:00 in the morning! Yunji de Nies
and I were talking about celebrity headlines, when I read the story about
Zachary Quinto, who played Spock in “Star Trek,” coming out as gay in a
magazine interview. Because WNN is a show where you can offer some
personality, I had a little fun with the story saying that I would drop my
rule against dating actors.

I’ve never shared that I’m gay on-air, even though I’ve been out to my
family, friends and co-workers for years. In fact, an old boyfriend – now
best friend – has always given me a hard time about not doing so. But for
the same reason that Zach decided to come out, I too, no longer wanted to
hide this part of my life.

There have been too many tragic endings and too many cases of bullying
because of intolerance. As a kid I wanted someone to look up to, someone
that could relate to the feelings I was having. Most of all, I wanted to
know that it would get better.

And it did.

As a journalist, I don’t want to be the story, but as a gay man I don’t want
to stand silent if I can offer some inspiration or encouragement to kids
that might be struggling with who they are.

The short answer is, I don't think so. L-Soft deleted everything when we
decided to stop paying them $600 a year around 2006.

The slightly longer answer is, they probably exist somewhere, but heck if I
know where. The likeliest place is my old armory.com account, but shell
access is down and I don't think FTP is showing everything. I'll do some
digging and let everyone know if I find anything.

Gosh, if only there were some way that those of us in the L.A. market who

Re: ABC News medical expert Jamie Zimmerman drowns in Hawaii

2015-10-16 Thread Rose Ellen Auerbach
Jamie's mother, Jordan, is part of a loose-knit group of actors I've known
for what seems like forever. I don't think I ever met Jamie, but we're all
aching for Jordan. Here's what Jordan posted on Facebook - I'm sure she
would't mind me sharing it.

This is a post I never thought I would have to write. It is not supposed to
happen this way!

On Monday my precious daughter Jamie Lauren slipped on some rocks at the
mouth of the Lumahai River on Kauai, Hawaii and was swept out to sea.
Lifeguards and paramedics rushed to rescue Jamie, but were not able to
resuscitate her.

Those of you who knew Jamie or perhaps read some of her writings knew that
she loved people above all else. It was her passion to be of service and
teaching meditation was her calling.

In her short 31 years Jamie traveled the globe representing America as a
caring mindfulness ambassador. Her accomplishments included helping
Congolese refugees in Zambia, volunteering in a cash-strapped hospital in
India, building classrooms in Uganda, and working with indigenous people on
the Amazon in Peru. Jamie served as a United Nations Global Health
representative in Haiti and she even taught meditation at the U.S. Capitol.

She was honored with UCLA’s prestigious Charles E. Young Humanitarian
Award, was a Rhodes Scholar finalist, and earned the title of Dr. Jamie at
the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Jamie wrote for the Huffington Post,
Sonima, and Mind Body Green. Mostly recently she interviewed Deepak Chopra
and had planned to collaborate with him on his new projectgiyo.com.
All this was in addition to her work with ABC News in
their Medical Unit as well as The (Goldie) Hawn Foundation where she
trained educators and school administrators to teach meditation to children.

As a teenager Jamie acted in community theater and guest starred on
national television shows, even winning an award nomination. She was
equally comfortable with famous people, highly educated scholars, and those
who fled war with only the clothes on their backs. She definitely was a
bridge builder. That was the public Jamie many of you knew.

But Jamie wasn’t just my daughter; she was my best friend. We suffered
through an extended period of estrangement, only to reunite and forge a
relationship that was stronger and more open than it ever had been before.
The Jamie I knew was the little girl who read herself to sleep - in the
morning I would find her sleeping with 10-12 books on her bed. At four
months she spoke her first word “Mama” four times and already had four
teeth. At ten months she walked without holding on.

As a 6th grader, Jamie hosted her grade school’s new parent orientation. I
never got to teach her how to ride a bike, because one day she just picked
up a neighbor’s two-wheeler and took off. And did you know that Jamie was a
damn good juggler, could ski black moguls, and taught herself to play the
keyboard?

My little girl was always trying to do too much. She wanted to write books
and already had a book agent. She just couldn’t stop taking on more. It’s
as if she knew her time was limited and she was trying to fit it all in!

I am so proud of my Jamie Jo and life will never be the same without her.
She helped make me a better woman and the world a better place. I am
honored to be her mother and only wish she had additional time here to do
even more, but that wasn’t God’s plan.

I hope my baby girl’s life will inspire you to take action to make our
world better. It can be as little as sharing a smile or kind word or as big
as your imagination and effort will allow. This is Jamie’s legacy. When you
act upon this challenge, Jamie’s smile will light up the heavens. I am sure
of it!

Jamie Lauren Zimmerman, M.D. – December 31, 1983 – October 12, 2015

Sweet dreams, my darling daughter, my sweet pea, my role model, my pride
and joy! I will love you forever!! As I repeatedly told you, I was thrilled
that you lived life to the fullest. Always know that I will miss you every
second, minute, and hour of every day. Until we meet again, my precious one!

Re: [misc movie q] did _any_ of you know about the new "Fletch" movie?

2022-09-19 Thread Rose Ellen Auerbach
I've been working in the ticketing world for a while, and the past few
months have been a mess of... let's say "interesting" publicity decisions.
Paramount is the distributor on this one, and all I can think is that
they're just not used to promoting titles with a release pattern like this.

Confess, Fletch is in about 500 theaters nationwide, and probably on the on
demand service of your choice. It has an 85% critics' score and 78%
audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, so it's probably worth your time.
(Disclosure: Rotten Tomatoes is owned by the same corporate overlords as my
employer.)

Re: ok, Rose, let's hear your predictions..

2023-01-24 Thread Rose Ellen Auerbach
I predict that this is the year we find out whether the Academy's attempts
to diversify their voters have had any effect.

If the voters are still dominated by rich men in their 70s, The Fabelmans
takes the top prizes, because a) it's a lovely film and b) it's by a rich
man in his 70s, for people of a similar generation. It also gets bonus
points for being largely about Steven Spielberg's mother Leah, who held
court at her restaurant on Pico for decades. Leah was a lot, but everyone
loved her.

Everything Everywhere All At Once gets everyone else's vote, because it's a
movie for basically everyone else. Rich dudes in their 70s can like it if
they want to, but they're probably actually voting for The Fabelmans or The
Banshees of Inisherin. (Also a lovely movie - somehow simultaneously the
funniest and saddest of the year.) Likeliest outcome is probably EEAAO wins
Picture, Spielberg wins Director, and Banshees upsets them both for
original screenplay.

All Quiet on the Western Front wins International Feature, but it doesn't
matter because it wasn't up against Decision to Leave.

The performance of Naatu Naatu at the ceremony launches a thousand memes.

I never catch up on all the sleep I have missed today and am making
stream-of-consciousness guesses well into July.

Re: for our Calif members and everyone else who loved P-22

2023-02-05 Thread Rose Ellen Auerbach
That captured everything so well.

People who haven't spent time in LA often don't realize how much of the
area is undeveloped and designated to stay that way. Griffith Park, where
P-22 lived and the memorial took place, is this huge spread right in the
middle of the city. The Santa Monica Mountains cut right though the city.
The Angeles Forest is a stone's throw from Pasadena.

We're used to urban wildlife in these parts, but it's usually skunks or
rattlesnakes or the very occasional deer. Then P-22 showed up, looked
around and basically said, "Eh, not the home I went looking for, but I can
work with this." And the local humans looked at this huge cat who was just
a little out of place, and said, "Awesome new neighbor. Yeah, we know:
Don't pet the kitty. Should we leave some water out?"

Other cities have stories about seldom-seen creatures that roam the hills,
but those are usually cryptids like Bigfoot. In LA, we had a freakin'
documented mountain lion. His being here was a fluke, but it led to the
construction of a wildlife bridge. It's mostly to help increase genetic
diversity among various wildlife populations split by highways - but if
another lion takes the bridge and wanders down to Griffith Park, we're not
going to be mad about it.

Re: if only we had some Nowbies covering the Entertainment industry

2023-04-29 Thread Rose Ellen Auerbach
This post sums it up well. The snarkier version is: The WGA contract that
came about after the last strike is up, and the people at companies that
air, stream or otherwise distribute the shows are like, "Yeah, lost money
during the pandemic, can't pay you, pay no attention to all the money we've
been sinking into streaming services that are eventually going to have to
consolidate because it turns out people have limits on the number or things
they'll subscribe to."

In my observations from around the industry, writers get the short end of
the financial stick because the people with money don't understand the
work.

There seems to be this notion that because so many writers are sitting
around coffee shops working on screenplays or pilot pitches, there's an
endless supply of writers who will do it for cheap. WGA keeps reminding
them that even though it often happens in isolation, screenwriting is a
specialized skill that is the foundation of anything worth watching.

The sides are far enough apart that I expect the strike will happen. Late
night shows will go dark, and that might be the only thing you notice at
first. If there's not a quick resolution, it's likely to drag on at least
until the networks don't have new fall seasons to sell advertising for.

Re: [DEADPOOL] On that long hearse ride....but the cops won't catch him

2024-04-11 Thread Rose Ellen Auerbach
The Chase went down the night before my college graduation. We were sitting
around the living room in my campus apartment, halfheartedly festooned with
streamers and balloons in classic "We're all packing to move out and we
found some streamers and balloons from that birthday party in February"
style, and I was trying to contextualize everything for my housemates and
neighbors.

Makes the dates easy to remember, anyway.
