Please, can you be more exact?
Which links are broken or don't work?
Did you some strange operations (eg. disable javascript after load the

The read receipt was requested by the original poster.

The software this list uses actually seems pretty bad at filtering out stuff
like this.

Good list management software strips out read-receipt headers [1] as well as
blocking the automated out-of-office messages that seem to plague this list.

in Javascript. ;)

Hi Dave,

I recommend you check out S5:

I've used them on quite a few occasions and they work very well so long
as you're happy playing with HTML markup.

Diego:
I've seen it, It seem like both HTML Slidy and JAST-A-Slide. Right It's
interesting and I will proof the knowledge of it. Thanks for the link.

Dave:
PS I suggest turning off email receipts on emails to mailing lists :)

Diego:
Damn! I forgot to turn off it every time I post to any kind of mailing

Sorry to all the list for the "return receipt" spam :)

[WSG] Accessible and cross browser online slide system

2008-10-21 Thread Diego La Monica
Hi guys,

  I'd like to inform you all that I've developed an alternative to "HTML
Slidy" that claim to be accessible, cross browser and standard like it.

The plus is that you can listen the slides with Assistive Technologies and
produce a remote presentation: Students (Client) listen the slides while the
Teacher (Server) leads them.

All information regarding JAST-A-Slide are available on
http://jastegg.it/jastASlide/ .

  I hope that will not be considered as spam, because I'm informing about a
standard and compliant software solution.

I will appreciate any kind of suggestion aimed to improve the quality and
the performance of that script!

R: [WSG] Re: ARIA

2008-08-11 Thread Diego La Monica
Hi Hassan and everybody,
  I think that we have to take a while of silence and think about what is
*necessary* and what is *pointless*.
Well. I'm member of W3C PFWG but I'd like to stress that what follows is my
opinion and does not reflect necessary the opinion of the whole Group.
  Well, I think that:
1. If you provide a valid mark-up you don't need to validate it.
2. If you apply ARIA roles, states and properties in your mark-up and HTML
Validator does not validate them... what's the problem? Is the Browser does not
render the page correctly? Well, the page is correctly rendered.
3. If you put ARIA in your mark-up, after that you validate the page, are you
making some mistakes? No

After that I suppose that serving a page understandable by AT (Assistive
Technology) is much more important of validation of the page...
(I'm not flaming but) I'm not saying to serve invalid pages but:
valid mark-up (self validation) with gain of ARIA is better than valid mark-up
(HTML Validator).

In conclusion, ARIA is still a Working Draft. Don't pretend to have all before
the time.

*NOTE* I want to clarify again that what I wrote reflects exclusively my humble
point of view.

Cheers.

Here's a example of what I'm doing http://www.munkyonline.co.uk/test.html

I want the li's to behave the same as table cells set with valign:middle.

I've had to float the li's left instead of displaying them inline otherwise
they stack on top of each other in a mess!

I suppose looking at it I could have used divs instead of a list but either
way, I think it will still behave the same.

Cheers,

Darren

Fuji, thanks for the response. I got it working while trying to
explain it to me.

Anyway, this is what I have

first level menu

second level menu 1
second level menu 2

third level menu

If I add display none to :
#menu ul ul or #nav li ul  {display: none}

the 'second level menu' is display to none
(http://lotusseedsdesign.com/1.gif
). That works, but I want the second level menu shows, and only wanted
the 'third level menu' and 'fourth level menu (if there is any) be
hiding.

For now, I am just concerning with getting ride of thrid level menu, but

With this:
#menu ul ul ul {display: none;}
All levels show up, and when I hover the menu item that has the sub-
level, for example, if I point my mouse on 'second level menu2', the
thrid level shows up, and the fourth level that is the child of third
level also show. http://lotusseedsdesign.com/3.gif
  I don't want that.

With this:
#menu li ul ul li  {display: none;}

The third level is gone, but not quite, because I am hiding the 'li',
so it leaves an empty block like so:
#menu ul#nav ul ul{display: none;}
http://lotusseedsdesign.com/2.gif

When trying to articulate my thinking, I came out something
#menu ul#nav ul ul {display: none;}

Vola! all working now

Oggetto: [WSG] Alternative to align = center?

Hi,

I know that the align attribute such as is not allowed
in XHTML Strict, but it got me thinking on what the possible alternatives
are for a dynamic environment such as a forum?

For instance if I know the image width or the total width of all the images
will be the same I usually put them in a wrapper with a fixed width and use
margin: 5px auto as an example.

What happens if you will never know the width of the images or how many
images someone may post, as happens on a forum I run. I’ve resorted to
creating a bbcode tag that uses as that is the only way
I can think of.

Are these scenarios always doomed to use transitional doctypes and
deprecated code?

I’d be interested in your opinions

Cheers

Simon

R: R: [WSG] Scriptaculous pop up over drop downs

2008-04-26 Thread Diego La Monica
Skip Evans:
I think first I'll try a hide and display with JS on the drop downs.
I get the impression that might be the most cross-browser compatible
solution.
Sound about right?

Diego:
Yes! I think it's the more convenient (and compliant) way to get your
application standard.

R: [WSG] Scriptaculous pop up over drop downs

2008-04-26 Thread Diego La Monica
Hi Evans,
  the problem is neither linked both to scriptaculous and your CSS.
  This is a well-known IE bug.
  The only way that you have to render a popup over the items is
with an iframe (only in IE).
  This is not so clear, and is totally invalid if you have a page XHTML 1.0
Strict... but it's the only solution.
  Another way you can follow (only if the popup overrides completely the
select boxes you can hide them when the popup is visible then re-show them
on the popup close event.

Sorry for my poor and non-understandable English :)

Cheers.

Oggetto: [WSG] Scriptaculous pop up over drop downs

Hey all,

I'm using Scriptaculous to create pop up windows
that sit over the browser to hold forms for user
input.

I have a really weird situation on one page with
IE 6 & 7 where the pop up appears over the browser
content, but two drop downs under the pop up bleed
right through and look as if they're in the pop
up. (It works fine in FF, naturally.)

I tried increasing the z-index value in the CSS
for the pop up, but this had no affect. Here is
the CSS for the pop up.

.popup_panel {
position: absolute;
text-align: left;
top: 100px;
left: 180px;
margin: 0 0 1px 0;
border: 2px solid #555;
z-index: 100;
background-color: #fff;
color: #999;
}

And the JS code that displays the pop up looks
like this:

var url='modules.php?mod=players&req=addplayer';
displayText('popup_space',url);
$('popup_space').show();
return false;

popup_space is set at the top of the header.html,
main template file:

I'm baffled at this point, so any advice would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

R: [WSG] Semantic menu implementation suggestions?

Furthermore, to make your life really easy now, you have to do only a
cut&paste of the code shown on the following page:
<http://diegolamonica.info/test/WSG/menu/menu.htm>

- Full xhtml compliat,

- works with: firefox 2.0, Safari for Windows, Internet Explorer 7 and
Opera.

Maybe it will be a good starting point.

I've found that this approach gives you a great deal of flexibility in how

Re: [WSG] a target=" blank" not part of xhtml

2008-03-28 Thread Diego La Monica
Another solution is http://wili.diegolamonica.info that allow you to open
discretional popup windows.

That page is in Italian only but in few days it will be translated in more
other languages.
It doesn't require that you are skilled in javascript, but requires to
follow only the instruction that are on the above link and it doesn't ask to
add extra markup and if you need you are able to manage popup window with
it's settings (toolbar, scrollbars, width, height, etc. etc.).
There are some examples on the page in the examples area that will help you
to understand how it works.

Cheers.

Hi Nancy,
  the reason for the black outline around the submit button in IE6 and 7 is
that IE renders the buttons with the system API, and if you view each
Windows interface, the default button that fires the click event with the
enter too is outlined black.

I think that It would not be at any accessible to make the submit button (

Diego:
well, you should inject CSS using Javascript,
(document.getElementById('foo').style
or document.getElementById('foo').className='fooxxx' or similar aproach).

James Jeffery:

> Also i am using onclick attribute to invoke the function, should i place
> it in the href attribute

Diego:
If you use a "#" into href there are no problems but is better if the
sub-list is identified with an unique Id and the parent link points to it.
For example:

  Item 1

  Item 1.1
  Item 1.2
  Item 1.3
  Item 1.4

But, be careful, if you handle the onclick event you should handle the
onkeypress event too to intercept the SPACEBAR and ENTER keys.

Maybe it could help you.
Good luck!

change your code as follows:

Re: [WSG] Calendars and tables

Hi Andrew,
  few months ago I've made a tutorial[1] on my site (in italian language) to
make an experimental calendar totally accessible using (not a table but) a
pointed list (ul/li)[2] (Try to disable CSS and try to navigate it. Hope
you'll enjoy it). Much people said me to be agree with my ideas much other
not.

  So, IMHO (it's better to put this acronym :) ) , I should make a yearly
calendar made as a table with 12 cells: 3 cols x4 (Seasons) rows, and inside
each of them I would put my unordered-list-accessible calendar.

  I hope to be clear and usefull to your issue!

Best regards!

Re: [WSG] lack of 'lang' attribute fails WAI

2007-09-07 Thread Diego La Monica
I suggest to use for the default lang the language which starts the body:
the first word is english or chinese?

And for each section that is in the other language (that not is the default)
you should specify the other language.

I hope it will be hopefull.

Diego La Monica:
 Ryan, I don't think is the correct use for dl+dt/dd because dt is a term
while dd is a definition for the term, and in a dictionary it would be the
best method (IMHO) because a term could have more than one definition, but
in an address, each definition (in your example) is right, but any of them
must be omitted.

I suppose that the correct way to represent an address is by microformats.

Bye.

Re: [WSG] To target or not

2007-07-19 Thread Diego La Monica

Hi

Joyce Evans:

I always thought it was a good idea to open links to other websites in a
separate window, so you don't lose the visitor. If the visitor clicks on
a
link on your website and it does not open into a separate window, the
visitor may stay in the other website for awhile, going to, say, 20
different pages. Most likely, he's not going to click on the back button
20
times to get back to your website, so you've lost the visitor or potential
customer. If the link opens up into a separate window, the visitor cannot
click on the back button, so he'll need to click on the exit (X) button,
and
voila, he's back in your website, where you want him to be.

Diego La Monica:
I wonder: who should decide where open new links you or the visitors of your
site?
I think they should be the last ones.

Re: [WSG] To target or not

2007-07-19 Thread Diego La Monica

Hi,
Gaspar:

But all this examples doesnt still force the users to open a new window!?!

Not all, WindowedLinks doesn't force user, but let the user to choose by a
common function on the page.

So i not use target="blank", it's the somethink, or i have turn off

javascript to be forced to open in a new Window!?

No, you have to turn on javascript to allow the script to open the desired
links in a new window

I many times think in this, and think in a way of using a class="" or

rel="" to a , this activate a javascript function that take the
href="" in question and creat after that element another elemente
but with target="_blank" and just a image that everyone use for "new
window".

It isn't wrong but (IMHO) it's too complex less usable.

I know that this will duplicate the code, but just on fly, and the

user will not be forced to open in new window, he have the possibility
to choose. Or anything of this is wrong?

The only thing that results not correct (nothing is wrong ;-) ) to me is
that a user whit disabilities that uses Screen Reader to browse the site,
finds the first link and could loose the second one or could be bored for
the duplicated information.
But could be a good idea.

See you!

But applying this ID to some element in the document means you're adding
extra markup, isn't? ;-)

Yes is the only extramarkup, but you don't need really to add it: in the
head of the script there is a configuration block that allow you to choose
in which element (identified by its "id") you would put the "control for the
user to open in same/new window the links".

In the last case you don't need to add extra markup to your web page
isn't? :-)

See you!

Re: [WSG] To target or not

2007-07-14 Thread Diego La Monica

Thierry,
 i'm sorry because i haven't jet translated the tutorial and the
presentation page, but sure! It is on my ToDo list. :-)

What i've said is:
to use windowed Links in it's base configuration you need only to insert
into the head block of your page the script element and any element in your
html structure identified (id) as "windowedLinks". That's all.

All other thinks are made by the script.

If you need to have any other extended (i'd like to remark extended)
functionality, you have to take hand to the class attribute of the desidred
link item.

You don't miss anything,,, it is my english too poor. :-)

Best regards.
Diego

Diego,
I'm confused, you say: "it is not required to add new markup", but then
mention "class name" and "span". Is the "windowedLinks" ID *necessary* for
your solution to work?
I didn't read your article (my Italian is not good enough), so it's
possible
I'm just missing something...

I wrote an article about this, this solution does not require extra
markup.
http://www.tjkdesign.com/articles/popup_window_with_no_extra_markup.asp

As a side note, I believe it is better to apply a simple class name to the
links rather than using the script to style them using a bunch of
properties.

Exactly, i wrote the mentioned script in this thread that identify by itself
the external links and leave to the user the choice (remembering it in the
future) try it... It's totally degradable:
- it is not required to add new markup
- it is ready to use
- it allow more extended behavior
- if you want to force to open a link in a new window just add a class name
wili-forced.

What should you do to configure it?
 Simply add a tag between and with id="windowedLinks" (eg.
).

End :-)

Re: [WSG] To target or not

2007-07-13 Thread Diego La Monica

I wrote for a solution few monts ago, that takes interests in some peoples
in Italy.

I've developed a javascript solution that grant accessibility and leave the
user to choose to open all external links (or the ones marked as external)
both in a new window and in the same window.

Actually the page i've wrote is only in italian language (I'm preparing an
English version).
In the case, the url to gather this script is:
http://wili.diegolamonica.info/
I don't like to make spam and sorry if you consider this message as it.

If someone is interested to have a notify when a translation of it is
available please send me a private msg so i don't make another spam about
that.

Perhaps I'm being dumb here, but I've looked at Microformats (briefly)
and I can't see the advantage over what any decent webby would knock up

frankly, daft.
