[XFree86] XFree86 4.3.0 release tagged

2003-02-26 Thread David Dawes
I've tagged the XFree86 4.3.0 release. The tag is "xf-4_3_0", and the
branch tag associated with this release is "xf-4_3-branch". This should
all be visible from the anoncvs repository soon. This marks the closing
of the 4.3.0 release, and I'd like to thank all who have contributed to
it. We've had a lot of great testing and bug reporting feedback over
the last few weeks.

Online documentation will be available soon at
. Check the README, Release Notes and
Installation Notes there before downloading.

Source tarballs and patches will be available over the next day or so
from our ftp site .

Some binary distributions will be available over the next week or so.

Re: [XFree86] XFree86-4.3.0rc2 and Radeon VE - sometimes works, sometimes not

2003-02-26 Thread hy0
There are some known problems with OEM cards (it appears to be your case).
The fixes for these problems haven't been merged into 4.3 release because
there is not enough time. Meanwhile you can try two thing:
1. Make sure your monitor is connected during the boot. Don't plug/unplug
monitor(s) after boot.
2. Use Option CloneDisplay "0"
If you still have the same problem and you know how to deal with source
code, you can try following patch.

In your log I found you are using 4.1.0, it's quite old release and doesn't
support new ATI cards. Solution: update XFree86.

[XFree86] Problems with my S3 videocard

2003-02-26 Thread El Beto
(sorry for my english, but i don't speak it very well)

Hello people of the Xfree86 proyect:

I send this e-mail because i think, that are some kind
of error in the support for my
videocard in the XFree86 4.x.x versions (my videocard
is a S3 Trio64V2 DX/GX with 1 MB
of videoram).

I think that is an error because i had installed
various distributions of GNU/Linux without
problems, but with the XFree86 3.3.6 version by
default.

When i install Red Hat 8.0 whith the XFree86 4.2.x by
default, my videocard was detected but
when the instalator tried to probe the configuration
(next to select the right frecuencies
of my generic monitor) the screen goes black and
nothig happend, next the instalator goes back
and continuos. So i continue the instalation with
those parameters, but without pass the probe.

When the system was instaled i had obteined this:

#startx

No ha podido iniciar servidor X, instalelo con una
nueva configuracion
(in english: Had't start X server, install it with a
new configuration)

*ddcprobe has returned bogus values:

ID: DEC780c
Name: None

HorizSync: -268377405--268370093
VertSync : -268370093--268378284

the system stays some time like this them give the
next messages.

I thougth that was a miss configuration problem or a
Red Hat 8.0 problem, but when i install
Linux Mandrake 8.2 the instalator gives the option to
install the XFree 4.2.0 or XFree 3.3.6
version. When i select the XFree 4.2.0 version in the
probe of the configuration the
instalation crash. But when i select the XFree 3.3.6
version and later probe the configuration
the instalation continuos normally. This makes me
think that are a problem of the support of my
videocard in the XFree86 4.x.x versions.

Well thanks for take the time of read my e-mail, and
sorry if is a problem solutionated.
If are some none trivial way of make my videocard
works with the XFree86 4.x.x versions
please make me now it.

It sounds like your Xlib has the wrong path for XKeysymDB. Did you
install it in the same ProjectRoot as it was built for (lots of things
can break if you don't)? What does:

   strings .../lib/libX11.so | grep XKeysymDB

Re: [XFree86] Help me!

2003-02-26 Thread ahaning
The people at [EMAIL PROTECTED] need just a _little_ more information
about your setup.

For instance, what ATI card are you using? If it's a Radeon, which one?
9000? 7500? 8500? VE? Please be sure to give the exact model number.

Then, which XFree86 server version are you using? This can be tricky to
tell most times, but it's safe to assume that it's one of the 4.X
servers. It might be easier to tell us if you're using a particular
distribution and version of that distribution.

For instance, you might say that you are having trouble getting your ATI
Radeon 9000 to work on Redhat 8.0 (I pulled this straight out of the
air.) From that, they would know what card you are using, and they could
even make a good guess as to what server you're using. Even then, they
might need to know exactly what problems you're having (problems related
to 2-D? 3-D?), but you would have given them more to work with so that
they could possibly tell you right away something like "Oh, yeah, we're
still working on that. It doesn't work at all right now."

Anyway, here's hoping for better bug reports in the future!

You should probably surf around http://dri.sourceforge.net/ and ask on
the dri-devel list how you can help if that doesn't give you ideas yet.

I'm unable to get it working. When using the dvi output for my video card I'm

Is there something that needs to be in my config file to use the dvi output?
I tried adding

But that didn't do anything.

'atimisc' is that part of the ATI driver that is loaded when a VGAWonder,
Mach32 or Mach64 variant is detected by the 'ati' front-end module.

[XFree86] Dell E171FP flat panel config problem

2003-02-26 Thread See Below To Reply
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1
hi all,

i read the recent thread on configuring XF86 to work with a dell
1800FP, but i'm having slightly different problems with my display,
a Dell E171FP. i would appreciate any guidance on the following:
1) the only file generated by xf86config or redhat-config-xfree86
is /etc/X11/XF86Config -- it doesn't ever make an XF86Config-4.
does this matter? (i do see a file called [EMAIL PROTECTED],
but if i copy that to /etc/X11/XFree86Config-4, startx aborts with
a signal 8.)
2) monitor specs are for bit depths of 8, 16 ('high color'), and
32 ('true color'). but i only see 8, 16, and *24* in the configs.
invoking startx with -fbbpp 32 doesn't seem to do anything. is
there a way to determine whether this driver can do 32bpp, or am
i stuck with 16 (24?)? (dell's specs for this display are posted
at http://support.ap.dell.com/docs/monitors/e171fp/en/specs.htm).
3) no matter what settings i put in XF86Config (whether editing by
hand or through one of the config tools), startx initally puts the
monitor in a mode it can't display. ctrl-alt-num_+/- gets me to a
mode it can display. if i run redhat-config-xfree86 and do the
advanced autoprobing stuff, it correctly recognizes the monitor
and the video card (intel 845). but if i accept the autoprobed
settings and restart X, it not only goes into the same "can't
display this mode" nonsense, but ctrl-alt-num_+/- no longer works.
i have to ctrl-alt-backspace and restore the config from
/etc/X11/XF86Config.backup.
i've included the relevant bits of XF86Config (the version that
appears to be closest to working) and the full output of startx
below. any help would be *sincerely* appreciated.
thanks very much in advance,

sasha m.

How can I fix that in rc2, and why Option "crtscreen" doesn't work?

2003-02-26 Thread ahaning
Out of curiosity, are you using the regular VGA port on the card, or the
DVI->VGA adapter with the monitor plugged into the DVI port on the card?
(I'm guessing you're using a CRT monitor.) I don't know if that will
help, but I know that with XF86 4.1.0, I had to plug my monitor into the
DVI port on my VE with the DVI->VGA adapter, but XF86 4.2.0 worked
without the adapter. Perhaps this is what's happening. It sounds like
it's trying to use an LCD monitor.

In any case, I haven't noticed any problems here with X 4.2.99.902 +
DRI-CVS on my VE.

It's as complete as make install makes it, just under a different
ProjectRoot. Dunno why is it still looking under /usr/X11 in this case,
but linking /usr/X11R6/lib/X11 to the new version does fix the problems.

Thanks for the advice,

Did you remove /tmp/.X0-lock like it said?

Re: [XFree86] [XFree86(TM) Bug Report] restarting computer disablesvideo card and x

2003-02-26 Thread Mark Vojkovich
I don't think this is an XFree86 problem. Perhaps if you disabled
your onboard graphics from within your motherboard bios, that would help.
Sounds like having two video cards in the system is confusing some
configuration application that comes with your Linux distribution.

[XFree86] XFree86-4.3.0rc2 and Radeon VE - sometimes works, sometimes not

2003-02-26 Thread Jacek Popławski
I am testing XFree86-4.3.0rc2 (binary from ftp.xfree86.org) on Linux-2.4.20,
with Radeon VE, ECS K7S5A and Duron-1000.

Problem is: sometimes X starts, sometimes they just show infamous message:

(EE) RADEON(0): No valid mode found for this DFP/LCD

I search on google, and solution was to add:

Option "CrtScreen"

But it didn't help, I got still same message.

Strange thing is - XFree86-4.2.0 _always_ starts well. I have only problem with
4.3.0rc2.

Is it problem with my configuration?

I attached XF86Config and XFree86.0.log.

[XFree86] error while attempting to enable overlay on Matrox G550

2003-02-26 Thread Colin Aspin
Hi,

I have errors when starting startx after I editted the XF86Config-4 file
to add in overlay as an option for 8 bit over 24 bit. I've attached the
/var/log/XFree86.0.log file and the current XF86Config-4 file. Anyone
know what is wrong, the error reported is that 'the root windows has
different color depth' than something else...

thanks,
colin aspin

I'm really interested in developping these drivers, so, please, help me...

Those problems are caused by your installation not being complete.
The defintions for the unrecognised keysyms are in lib/X11/XKeysymDB,
so you need to update that file.

The mapping you should be seeing is this:

key   { [ 2,   quotedbl,   at,oneeighth ] };

(from pc/latin(type4), included from pc/es).

Re: [XFree86] ATI Radion 9000 RH 8.0 Configuration Error

2003-02-26 Thread William G. Lea
I've been through the XFree86 mail archive with no luck. I found the PCI
problem, but now it seem the config file is strangely formated by
fglrxconfig. Are you saying that the problem is with the X sysem?

Can you give me a better reference to search on? Better still, just bundle
up the posts (if you still have them) and send them to me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm reluctant to try recompiling X from CVS unless I have to. Absolutely
have to. I'm not sure how that process works and one learning curve is
enough right now...

Re: [XFree86] ATI Radion 9000 Pro ML 9.0 Configuration Error

2003-02-26 Thread William G. Lea

Yep! I got the same problem.  I think I traced
it down to the file name. I'd downloaded the system to a windows disk and then
tried toexecute the rpm form the Windows partition after:
mount -t vfat /dev/hdc1 /mnt/f
rpm -i fglrx-...   same results, well
some times they would run from the terminal window in KDE

Finally I repeated the downloan in a Linux browser
and low and behold the file name was different and they would execute.

Alas I find that fglrxconfig doesn't work properly!
the XF86Config-4 file is mall formed. I'm trying to decipher the thing now, but
with no doc from ATI it's slow going...

I would say you dont have the install, so you don't
have the driver fglrx or the flawed configurator program.  You've got to
get the RPM's to run and then watch the output.  It will try to compile a
kernel module this worked on my system. So NOW it's a matter of next getting the
config file right at least for me.  I'm successful in running single headed
with the fglrx driver, but I want a double headed sysem...

  9.0 Configuration Error

  All,

  My issue is
similar to those experienced by William G. Lea but as there are some subtle
differences, I thought I would start a new thread.

  My
  setup:
  Mandrake Linux
  9.0
  kernel:2
  .4.19
  XFree86 Version
  4.2.1

  Problems:
  I attempted to
install the 4.2.X ATI drivers found at http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/linux/radeon-linux.html?cboOS=LinuxXFree86&cboProducts=RADEON+9000&eula=&choice=agree&cmdNext=Next
  however,
when I login as root and try:

  $>rpm -i :
yields no ouptut, so do I assume
  everything is ok
  $>rpm -q     :tells me
  the package is not installed
$>rpm -qpl   : yieldslds no output
  Also I also
can' seem to find where  "fglrxconfig" is meant to be
  installed let alone run it!

  Solution:
  Is it to upgrade
to XFree86 4.2.99.902? If so is there any an additional  patch and
also do I need to add anything extra the to the config
  file?

  Regards

My point was that because the repeater do not respond to commands I am
waiting for a lot of timeouts, which is worsen because of retries.
(Replaced with a real mouse lowers the freeze to about 2 seconds). Though,
it seems that X is doing a lot other stuff when switching back to X, so
some of these might also prolong the freeze in your case. (or slow mice,
some need calibrationtime after a reset in the area of 750 msec)

Okay, so how do I tell X that the mouse is not changing state, and even if
it did, X could not do anything about it? It seems easy to just add an
option for the mousedriver to skip initialisations, but there might be
some obvious "fix" I a havent found, because I have only looked at
mouse* code. So would it be to late to send a patch for that?

Re: [XFree86] Keyboard not working with latest CVS

2003-02-26 Thread Iñaki García Etxebarria
Hi again,

> I just upgraded to CVS and my keyboard stopped working.
I dug a little deeper, now I have the keyboard (mostly) working.
I didn't realize at first, but the Xserver was printing to the console
this (*), which I include at the end of the email. I edited
lib/X11/xkb/compat/xfree86 and lib/X11/xkb/symbols/pc/pc appropiately
and the error messages are gone now. There's still a bug somewhere
though.

The only problem remaining is that the "Alt Gr" characters in the
spanish keyboard don't work. For those who don't know, there are some
keys with three characters on them (2 " @ for example), and the third
character is usually accessed by pressing a key labelled 'Alt Gr' and
hitting the key. But doing that gives:

Hmmm, I think I saw a message about this on the xpert-list (so it's a
few weeks ago), but it said that the beep continued if you did xset b on
so it's not really a fix, just something that makes you not go insane
:), I also think there were a real fix sent to the list, no promises
though.

[XFree86] ATI Radion 9000 Pro ML 9.0 Configuration Error

2003-02-26 Thread Westerdale, Daniel

All,

My issue is similar
to those experienced by William G. Lea but as there are some subtle differences,
I thought I would start a new thread.

My
setup:
Mandrake Linux
9.0
kernel:2
 .4.19
XFree86 Version
4.2.1

Problems:
I attempted to
install the 4.2.X ATI drivers found at http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/linux/radeon-linux.html?cboOS=LinuxXFree86&cboProducts=RADEON+9000&eula=&choice=agree&cmdNext=Next
however,  when
I login as root and try:

$>rpm -i : yields no ouptut, so do I assume everything is
ok
$>rpm -q     :tells me the
package is not installed
$>rpm -qpl   : yieldslds no output
Also I also can'
seem to find where  "fglrxconfig" is meant to be installed let alone run it!
Solution:
Is it to upgrade to
XFree86 4.2.99.902? If so is there any an additional  patch and also
do I need to add anything extra the to the config
file?

Regards

Daniel

RE: [XFree86] window client

2003-02-26 Thread Josh Liechty
Perhaps you should consider VNC ( http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/ ).
The version for Linux creates a separate virtual "desktop" for each copy
of the server that is run. This can be connected to with the VNC client
(available also for Windows) over a network, allowing you to run Linux/X
Window System applications on the Linux system and have them display on
the Windows system.

If that's not what you were intending, please clarify your post a bit.
As far as I know (I'm new here, so I can't be certain), it's ok to be a
little more wordy (i.e. provide more details about your system and
software configuration, and about what you want to do) if it means that
your post can be better understood.

I have the same long freeze, but am not, as far as I am aware, using a
repeater. I do have two mice, which doubles the delay.

It isn't so much turning it off, but while the X server is switched
away, something else may have put the mouse into some other state;
eg most wheel mice can speak either PS/2 or IMPS/2.

"atimisc" is the driver for older* ATI cards/chips; supported chips
include the mach8, mach32, mach64 and ragepro, hence the "misc"
part of the name.

*any ATI card/chip older than the Rage 128 (supported by the
"r128" driver) or the Radeon (supported by the "radeon" driver).
To simplify installation there is also an "ati" driver which is
just a wrapper that knows which of these 3 to use to support a
particular chip.

What is atimisc? Will this be (or is this) a server extension? In what
development stage is it?

If my assumption is correct and this is a server extension providing
support for tasks like the one we talk about, I'd be deeply interested in
1) either generalizing it so that eg. the SiS driver can make use of it
as well, or
2) copying some code :)

Folks have been bugging me for a possibily to switch the output device
at run-time ever since...

[XFree86] Mouse repeater annoyance

2003-02-26 Thread Peter Berg Larsen
Hi,

I am currently using RC2 (upgraded yesterday from 4.2.1) and is irritated
by a 8-9 second freeze of X when switching to X from the console. This
seems to happen because X is set to use a mouse repeater (that does not
respond to commands), combined with that X resets the mouse when swithing
to X from the console. This (long) freeze did not happen in 4.2.1, but
probably changed with these:

 835. Avoid endless loop when initializing an PS/2 mouse behind a
  repeater (Egbert Eich).

 756. PS/2 mice initialization sequence changed: rerun entire sequence
when something goes wrong - this needs to be rewritten completely
after 4.3 is out (Egbert Eich).

This is a what I think is happening (mouse.c:initMouseHW):

10 retries of
   10 resets doing
   xf86WaitForInput(pInfo->fd, 20)
Send first byte init sequence doing
   1 usleep
   xf86WaitForInput(pInfo->fd, 20)
   3 usleep

Why reset the mouse when switching to X in the first place ? How
can it be turned off? (It can't if I have read the code correct, so the
actual question is whether it is to late to do anything about it)
