The "nv" driver does not support scaling the display. You can do that if you are using NVIDIA's binary drivers, but I'm not sure you'd like the result. Flat panels are not analog devices so scaling doesn't always look so good on them. You can change Mozilla's fonts from Mozilla's menu at: Edit/Preferences/Appearance/Fonts Also, changing the dpi setting (startx -- -dpi 200) may help things. Saulo, I will disappoint you. I had the same problem last week. Exactly the same report. For some reason these two folder became inaccessible. They are in the / but you can't manipulate them. I couldn't find any way. The only think that helped was ( unfortunately ) new installation. And after finishing the installation backup both folder immediately. You'll need to set the X server binary to suid root, or re-install with the config flag in host.def set to install as suid root. For example, for startx to work on Linux, it needs the properties to look like: -rws--x--x1 root root 2019033 2003-06-25 12:49 /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86* -- Kevin ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

Welcome to the club. I also haven't been able to use my S3 968 based cards with XFree86 4.x. My problems are due to the lack of support for the IBM RGB526 RAMDAC (which my cards use), but I didn't notice that error in your log file. You might try using the XFree 3.3.6 S3 server, as it works, but lacks some of the features that tend to make 4.x desirable. -Toth ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

RE: [XFree86] HELP with XF86Config-4 file on DEll Inspiron 5000e with ATI RAGE 128 Mobility running MDK 9.1
Hopefully other people can be a lot more help than me, but for the moment you could try commenting out the refresh rates in the 'screen' section. The server will use a safe default, which wont be a fantastic rate, but at least you might be able to see something. The server is basically complaining that none of the modes it knows about (including the modelines specified explicitly in your xf86config) fit the refresh rate specified. -Oli >= Original Message From "Mr. Smith" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> = >Hi there, >I need some help to configure my Dell Inspiron 5000e so I will be able to start the X. Re: [XFree86] newbie - i wanna run KDE but XFree86 runs first!
Starting kdm from a root login brings up the login manager window where he ca login as user.. Then make the changes to allow his syste to start as init 5 (Xwindows), log out and reboot into Xwindows, kdm login manager. Yeah, I realise. I was only suggesting an alternative in case for some reason launching kdm didn't work - for example, if it for some reason had not been installed. He mentioned that he was able to launch KDE manually, so a startx based approach was likely to work. In your log stands: (EE) VGA(0): Driver can't support depth 24 You should set ist to 8 (running dpkg-reconfigure) Also you should look, if vga is the appropriate server for your card (on xfree/support. On http://www.xfree86.org/4.1.0/vga.4.html you read, that: "vga is an XFree86 driver for generic VGA video cards. It can drive most VGA-compatible video cards, but only makes use of the basic standard VGA core that is common to these cards. The driver supports depths 1, 4 and 8. All relevant visual types are supported at each depth. Multi-head configurations are supported in combination with some other drivers, but only when the vga driver is driving the primary head." What video card do you have? According to your card you can look in http://www.xfree86.org/4.1.0/manindex4.html which server to use.
