Re: Problems with RC3
On Mon, 23 Feb 2004, [iso-8859-1] Chris Rankin wrote: Secondly, there are no pex5 and xie modules in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/. Now I never knew what these modules did, and I suspect that they might have been removed before 4.4 because I've previously overlaid the new XFree86 release on top on the existing one. (Having made a copy, of course.) pex5, the PHIGS extension for X, and xie, the X Image Extension were not built by default in 4.3 (although I believe that they still built if you changed build options appropriately). I doubt that they have recieved any significant testing since then, so they may have suffered software rot. Should I delete these from my installation and config file instead? I haven't found anything about these modules in the RELNOTES for either 4.3 or 4.4. I would indeed delete these from your install and config. -- Andrew C. Re: i855GM: New BIOS breaks i810-driver
Christian Zietz writes: Hi, as I already pointed out some of the users affected by the problem don't want to or aren't able to build XFree86 out of the CVS sources. So I wrote a small hack which wraps around int 0x10 and prevents the function in question (ax=0x5f64, bx=0x0300) from being called. I'm aware that that's a much dirtier solution to the problem than the patched driver but nonetheless I think it might be useful for people who want to use the precompiled XFree86 that came with their distribution. Download URL for 855wrap: http://www.chzsoft.com.ar/855wrap.tar.gz I think it would be worthwhile to investigate the origin or the problem and report it to Intel to fix it in the BIOS - in case they have broken something. It looks like an endless loop to me. Since the problem appears both to happen inside the emulator and vm86 mode it points to the BIOS however we cannot say for sure. One may want to try to set up registers and execute this command from 'debug' inside DOS to see if this ends up in an endless loop also. No, there is no reference to Dell in the BIOS. I'm not even sure if they configure the BIOS. I just know that there is the possibility to do so and that the faulty table is in an area where some values can be configured by the OEM. So it doesn't need to be a bug introduced by Dell, it's just one possible explanation. But I suppose that all computers made by Dell affected by this bug use BIOS build 3066. So you could scan for 3066Intel(r), although I don't think this would be a good idea. Dell could release a BIOS update or other computers from other companies with a different build number could be affected, too. So, why not continue to use a configuration option? I don't see any problems caused by not calling this particular function. CU Christian PS: Some video BIOS developer must be a fan of Star Wars. So it doesn't need to be a bug introduced by Dell, it's just one possible explanation. No, but currently we've only had reports of people with a Dell BIOS complain of problems. But I suppose that all computers made by Dell affected by this bug use BIOS build 3066. So you could scan for 3066Intel(r), although I don't think this would be a good idea. Dell could release a BIOS update or other computers from other companies with a different build number could be affected, too. Right, so a combination of the build number and something else would nail it down furthur. So, why not continue to use a configuration option? I don't see any problems caused by not calling this particular function. I don't mind leaving the option in, but it's nice to be able to print out the detected monitor information for those BIOS' that actually work. XvMC indirect rendering / dri direct / extensions
Hi! I'm a bit new to this, so please forgive me if asking stupid questions. I have had a look at the XvMC API for the purpose of eventually making a trial extension to the via driver for the via MPEG2 decoding engine. The current VIA API for this is accessing the HW mmio directly more or less without interaction and sync with the X server and will require root privileges. Now, much of what's needed is there.. creating of contexts, surfaces and subpictures. The rest would require either an extension of the XvMC API or implementing just a subset of the XvMC calls and modify the VIA API to get surfaces and context from this XvMC light and interact with drm to be able to lock hardware and map mmio as a non root user. I think this should be implemented as an indirect driver since this would eliminate the need for hw locking and dealing with memory protection issues while still keeping communications at a minimum, but this would require some extensions to the XvMC API mainly for describing an MPEG frame and for adding slice data. Looking at the XvMc code in current X, although the draft standard describes support for indirect functionality, the infrastructure (including protocol extensions and function hooks) does not seem complete ? Also if implementing direct XvMC is considered, DRI seems very tightly coupled and mixed with Hw accelerated OpenGL . Is there a simple way to only get access only to the drm HW lock and non-root client mmio / framebuffer mapping? Hints to relevant documentation would be appreciated. Another Suggested Rendiition Fix
I have opened a Bugzilla bug report (1204 for Drivers) that documents a Rendition bug and provides a suggested fix. (I also created--and marked as resolved--1200 through 1203 to document issues addressed by the last patch to the Rendition driver.) I will summarize that report here. The Rendition driver causes sporadic system lock-ups on text mode entry (associated with either VT switching or with exitting the server). This problem seems to have a long pedigree--I see it in release notes for XFree86 4.0 (http://www.xfree86.org/4.0/rendition9.html#9), and it is still in the release notes for 4.3 (http://www.xfree86.org/4.3.0/rendition9.html#9). While I cannot reproduce this problem at will, I have never managed 20 consecutive switches to text mode (in the same server run) without seeing the lockup. Here is the proposed fix: $ diff -c vmodes.c.4.3.99.903 vmodes.c *** vmodes.c.4.3.99.903 2002-12-11 12:23:33.0 -0500 --- vmodes.c2004-02-22 02:17:31.0 -0500 *** *** 376,382 int iob=pRendition-board.io_base; verite_restoredac (pScreenInfo, reg); ! verite_out32(iob+MODEREG,reg-mode); verite_out8(iob+MEMENDIAN,reg-memendian); verite_out32(iob+DRAMCTL,reg-dramctl); verite_out32(iob+SCLKPLL,reg-sclkpll); --- 376,393 int iob=pRendition-board.io_base; verite_restoredac (pScreenInfo, reg); ! ! /* ! * If this is a Verite 1000, restore the MODEREG ! * register now. Version 3.3.6 fails to lock the machine through more than fifty switches into text mode (at which point I give up). With the above change, I have seen the same results under 4.4 RC3. It seems that my original observation about missing printer buildin fonts was wrong. The server refused to start and I thought that this was caused by problems with the printer buildin fonts (note that I have modified the font code in my own tree - if someone tries to start Xprt with an invalid (or missing) configuration the server now refuses to start (this is mainly to get rid of the myths about Xprint caused by server misconfiguration)). After some more debugging I realised that the dropping of font path elements isn't supported by my codebase (since I am working on a X11R6.6-based tree which misses the code which can drop parts of the font path without aborting the server startup) so the server fails to start. Indirect rendering of Mpeg isn't very attractive due the large amount of communication between the client and X-server that would be required. Indirect rendering of XvMC was something that could be added at some point, but I didn't expect that anyone would actually get around to implementing it because the performance is expected to be unsatisfactory. Note that the XvMC pipeline comes after the MPEG variable length decode. I'm guessing that the amount of data pushed through an indirect socket probably exceeds the size of the raw MPEG file. As for a direct implementation. The problem is essentially the same as the one solved by OpenGL. I would expect OpenGL's solutions to the HW access problems to work for XvMC as well. [XFree86] DVI output from nvidia (pny) board
Hi, I have a nvidia based (pny) Quadro 4 750 XGL and a HP 2025 monitor. I'm using it with W2K with the DVI-I interface which is running fine. I also installed Redhat Linux 9 and tried X. the X server starts (as I can see from the XF86.log file) but there is no output on the screen. I changed the the output to VGA and there the output is visible on the screen. After swiching back to the DVI-I output I tried to play around with the Option CrtcNumber in the XF86Config file but to no success. Can somebody help? I attach the log file from when using the DVI-I interface. Hi ya all, I have a problem, with my X. ( no ;-) ) I run Debian sid, kernel 2.6.2, xserver-xfree8 4.3.0-2,gcc 3.3.2-3, so I upgraded my system and at start ( the next day ), my X goes only in 800x600 instead 1024x748, I use vesa driver because my laptop has Prosavage 8 on VIA KN400 chipset, and drivers does not function well. That's it, the /var/log/XFree86.0.log errors seems only to be: - Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory) - VESA(0): VESA VBE DDC read failed - VESA(0): VBESetVBEMode failed...Tried again without customized values - VESA(0): Failed to set up write-combining range (0xf000,0x400) - (II) VESA(0): Total Memory: 1024 64KB banks (65536kB) (II) VESA(0): monitor1: Using hsync range of 31.50-48.50 kHz (II) VESA(0): monitor1: Using vrefresh range of 70.00-130.00 Hz (II) VESA(0): Not using mode 1024x768 (no mode of this name) (--) VESA(0): Virtual size is 800x600 (pitch 800) (**) VESA(0): Built-in mode 800x600 (**) VESA(0): Built-in mode 640x480 (++) VESA(0): DPI set to (100, 100) (II) VESA(0): Attempting to use 72Hz refresh for mode 800x600 (114) (II) VESA(0): Attempting to use 85Hz refresh for mode 640x480 (111) (**) VESA(0): Using Shadow Framebuffer but I didn't touched in anyway neither X nor anything concerned. When looking at the connectivity (indicated by the lights on the modem) I found that it was going on and off. Juggling the cables slightly seemed to give a steady light on the modem but Internet browsing showed no improvement. As a matter of fact, mouse movement and the entire system became extremely slow and minutes later completely unresponsive. I couldn't open a terminal, so I rebooted the system. The problem appeared since. The slowdown sounds like perhaps something bad happened in the kernel. Were you able to shutdown cleanly or did you have to hit the reset switch. There may have been disk corruption, in which case, installing a new X-server might be a good idea (try something newer like 4.3 while you're at it). Or it's possible that this bad stuff was due to some device acting weird. Are the /var/log/messages that look suspicious (like panics) back from when the slowdown happened? Anyhow, it sounds like a system-level problem, perhaps a hardware problem. Do you have problems with overheating? You also might want to check that all your cards and ram are plugged in securely. I'm assuming it's not a new machine and you haven't changed anything recently (like adding new ram)? Mark. Hi Mark, I had to hit the reset switch. I couldn't get a clean shutdown. You're right about the machine. It is old. I will back up my files and upgrade to a newer version of the OS while I am at it. Thanks for the help. Greatly appreciated. [XFree86] keyboard hang
Hi, I have a Compaq laptop with a radeon IGP320M. It has Mandrake 9.2 installed. I just installed the dri xserver (4.3.99.12) and last night's radeon driver build (20020224) from dri.soureforge.net and it works great for the app that I need it work for. However there are a couple of things that do not work. The keyboard hangs when X starts for the first time after a reboot or after restarting from single user mode, the mouse works OK. If I ssh in and stop X and start it again then the keyboard works again. With the X from Mandrake 9.2 (4.3.0) it did not have this problem. Is this an issue with X 4.2.99.12 or the updated radeon driver or dri? Another thing is that I can't get the external monitor as CRT2 to work at a different freq to the laptop's LCD panel. If I don't set the radeon driver's CRT2* options then the external monitor works at 60Hz which is the same as the LCD. If I set these options to anything then the CRT2 monitor does not work at all. Any pointers about how to go about fixing these would be appreciated. Re: [XFree86] Virtual Terminal dual X Problems Please Help
I have been trying to get two different xsessions running on the same VT. I am running Slacware 9.0, kernel 2.4.20, and .XFree86 Version 4.3.0. Currently each X that I kick off default to the next available VT. And if I try to force the xsession to use the same vt of the other, I receive this error: _XSERVTransSocketINETCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed _XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: server already running Fatal server error: Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X server isn't already running What I would like to do is have one Xsessions that runs a windows manager with mouse, keyboard, and touchscreen for inputs and the other xsession with no windows manager and only a touchscreen for input. I don't want mouse and keyboard ability on the second Xsession so there is no stealing of inputs and the touchscreens ability are independent from one another. For first sesion $ startx -- :0 -layout first vt7 For second sesion $ startx -- :1 -layout second vt8 Linux kernel allow only one current VT. If You switch to vt7 , then second X server do pause while vt8 become active. Your different input devices are defined in first or second server layout section, file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 Both servers must start gdm, or You can start 2nd X server from xterm inside 1st X server. [XFree86] [Fwd: Persistent Displays are posible using X?]
Hello, I've found a way to achieve persistent display functionality. if someone is googling in the future for this problem i'm posting an answer here myself: I've used Xvnc X server which acts as an X server to applications and as an vnc server to an vnc client, so Xvnc is started in the server, not in the client as you could think for an X server. This Xvnc gives a virtual framebuffer persistent across connections via vncviewer which is started against the local Xserver of the client and renders the remote Xvnc. thanks. Ral. ---BeginMessage--- Hi everybody, Does an X-extension, application or proxy exists to achieve a functionality similar to what screen does for terminals? What I am looking for is display persistency, so you can detach from your current desktop and reconnect later and get the same desktop you had. I've been looking for a while and I've been unable to find any useful information. Thanks in advance. Ral. PD. Please CC [EMAIL PROTECTED] on the answer (if any) because I'm not subscribed.
