The server needs to have write access to /var/log/ so it
can write its log file. It sounds like your server doesn't
have root permissions. It's typical to make it suid root.

Unfortunatley, I've been unable to access my files that have the complete

Some more information about the type of machine (what kind of video
card?) and the version of TurboLinux (what version of XFree86?) would
be helpful.

What if you type X -configure and follow the resulting instructions?

Try running `XFree86 -configure` and use the XF86Config this generates.

FWIW, this problem has been corrected in the CVS sources.

Since you said you see the nVidia logo, it sounds like you're using
their binary driver, which will make it difficult for people other
than nVidia to give you assistance.

My guess would be that you have the wrong nVidia driver installed.

If you want any more assistance from this list, you're going to at
least give us some more information. What card are you using? What
driver and version are you using? What version of XFree86 are you
using? What OS/distribution? Also, the full log file can be helpful,
too.

The PC hardware contains :
- Intel Pentium 133 Mhz

I had manually configured the XF86Config file ( see attached files ) ; for

When I'm under Suse7.0, I can start the X server ( startx ) ( see

Fatal server error
out of memory

XIO : fatal IO error 104 ( connection reset by peer ) on X server :0.0

Can you tell me where is the bad configuration and how I can run the X server
under Slackware.
The latest fix for this problem is in XFree86 4.5.0.

The 4.4.0 DRM source won't build on some newer kernels. The 4.5.0 version
builds on the latest kernels as of when it was released (last week). This
is, however, unrelated to the problem you are seeing.

i am attching the xfree86.0.log file

According to the log, XFree86 is failing to guess what your mouse device
is. This is improved significantly in 4.5.0. If it should still fail to
guess your mouse device there, let us know. You can give it some help
by creating a symlink from your mouse device to /dev/mouse.

[XFree86] Fatal Server Error - No Screens Found

2005-01-29 Thread bob
When I attempt to configure, I receive an error message about missing
libglide2x.so, not sure if it is related to my main problem of no screens
found.

My intuition leads me to suspect this is something to do with my having a
video card in a AGP slot on a motherboard with an integrated video card.
My display works fine in text mode, but I am unable to get into any kind
of graphics mode. When I do startx I get a black screen and only return
to text mode after several CTRL-C attempts.

My monitor is plugged into the video card in the AGP slot. It works
perfectly fine in Windows XP with my current setup.

Thanks for any suggestions you may be able to provide.

Bob King

2005-01-29 Thread bob
Does that mean I need to update the kernel? I found the following
information on the agpgart you refer to at:
http://www.xfree86.org/~dawes/845driver.html

In addition to building/installing XFree86 CVS code, a recent 2.4.x kernel
is needed. 2.4.19 or later is recommended. If you want to use the DRI
support, an updated i830 DRM module is also required, and it is best to
build one from either the XFree86 or DRI source tree. To do this you will
also need your kernel source installed. Here is an example of how to build
and load the i830 DRM module:

# cd xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/os-support/linux/drm/kernel
# make -f Makefile.linux i830.o
# modprobe agpgart
# rmmod i830
# insmod i830.o
Here is an example of how to install the i830 DRM module so that it will
be loaded automatically when needed:

# mv /lib/module/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/char/drm/i830.o \
 /lib/module/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/char/drm/i830.o.save
# cp i830.o /lib/module/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/char/drm
For full functionality when using the 852GM, 855GM or 865G chipsets, an
updated agpgart kernel module is also required. A patch for the 2.4.20
kernel can be found here, a patch for the 2.5.56 kernel is here, and a
tarball with the complete source for the agpgart driver in a form that can
be built standalone for 2.4.x and older 2.5.x kernels can be found here.
The 852GM, 855GM and 865G support should be included with future 2.5.6x
kernels.

I couldn't find where agpgart is loaded. It needs to be loaded for you
 video card to work well.

You're using the wrong driver. You have an ATI card, not an
NVIDIA card. In the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file, replace Driver nv
with Driver ati.

When I attempt to configure, I receive an error message about missing

My intuition leads me to suspect this is something to do with my having a
video card in a AGP slot on a motherboard with an integrated video card.
My display works fine in text mode, but I am unable to get into any kind
of graphics mode. When I do startx I get a black screen and only return
to text mode after several CTRL-C attempts.

My monitor is plugged into the video card in the AGP slot. It works
perfectly fine in Windows XP with my current setup.

I'm running with a dual boot system - linux and Win XP - so I am certain
the monitor/video card combo works in Windows.

 Thing's I've tried already:

 -- searching the XFree86 archive for libglide2x.so issues - didn't find
anything that helped with my situation

 -- copying libglide3.so to libglide2x.so - didn't work, was not able
to fool the system this way

-- downloading and installing a libglide2 RPM - would not install, there
were conflicts with other installed RPMs

-- removing libglide3 RPM - could not do it, too many dependencies

-- forced installation of the libglide2 RPM - still receive the
 libglide2x.so error message

-- plugging a second monitor into the port connected to the integrated
video card on the motherboard - no change

Thanks for any suggestions you may be able to provide.

an Intel chip. I think you have GeForce.

Some kernel already have it. You just have to enable it. I don't know about
2.4.7-10. It is available in 2.4.18.

The server log output tells you exactly what is wrong. You are missing
some base modules -- some components required by the X server -- that
should exist below the path /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/. Specifically you
are missing (at least) the file /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libbitmap.a
and I would assume various others. You do not have to re-install your
entire OS (afterall, this is not a Redmond product); you should be able
to get away with just re-intalling various XFree86 packages.

The XFree86 modules are located in the base XFree86 RPM package in Red
Hat 9 -- specifically, the package XFree86-4.3.0-2. You should
re-install this package (and possibly some other XFree86 packages) and
see if your problem goes away.

2004-11-30 Thread Mark Vojkovich
You have an incomplete or corrupted XFree86 installation.
I have heard of this many times and only on Red Hat 9. The
only conclusion I can come to is that sometimes Red Hat 9
deletes essential XFree86 modules for some unknown reason.
I don't know of anyone doing a thorough investigation to determine
the cause for sure. Reinstalling XFree86 alone should be sufficient
to get things working again.

You seem to have chosen to use the generic VGA driver. If I remember correctly
this mode can only display upto 640x480 at 8 bit colour mode.

 (**) VGA(0): Depth 16, (--) framebuffer bpp 16
 (==) VGA(0): RGB weight 565
(==) VGA(0): Default visual is TrueColor
 (==) VGA(0): Using gamma correction (1.0, 1.0, 1.0)
 (==) VGA(0): videoRam: 256 kBytes.

You then try to run 16 bit colour mode. This does not fit within the memory of
a generic VGA card (256 kB). It seems there are two options to solving your
problem:

1. Use the correct driver for your video chipset.
2. If the generic VGA driver is indeed all your chipset can handle: use 8 bit
colour mode, or buy a better graphics card.

Re: [XFree86] fatal server error

2004-10-15 Thread Erik Knight
Hey thanks a lot,

That totally fixed the problem. Those 'wrong' values were actually
what I input during the config process. I ran lspci when it asked for
that info and I guess I didn't really understand the output properly.
However if I just left that step blank, or later deleted the entry
from the config file then everything worked out.

Again, thanks a lot,

Erik

Otherwise ensure you have installed the fonts for X and have the path correct in

Considering the stack of primary devices X seems to find, I think you may want
to consider setting the BusID to one of them to force X to choose. Currently
it doesn't seem to be able to do that. Try adding
  BusID0:8:0
to your Device section, or if that doesn't work, try some of the other IDs
mentioned for your primary devices.

The syntax would be:

   BusID PCI:0:8:0

That's worth a try. This is either a mothboard BIOS bug or bus
probing bug in XFree86. If /proc/pci reports these redundant
S3 devices as well, I would say it's a BIOS bug and you should
look into an upgrade. If /proc/pci doesn't show the multiple
S3 devices, then perhaps this is a bug that was fixed in XFree86
4.4.

This problem on the BSDs usually occurs because the system's
security level is set too high to run XFree86.

rm -rf /tmp/.x0-lock

If it is generated, your /var/log/XFree86.0.log would be useful.

Your using the wrong driver. You should be using the i810 driver and not
the cirrus driver.

2003-12-11 Thread Mark Vojkovich
There are no errors in either of those logfiles. They both
look like a properly working X-servers. What exactly is the problem?

Mark.

PS. You should remove the videoram line from your Section Device
in the /etc/X11/XF86Config file though. The server will autodetect
the correct amount. Overriding the autodetected value in the XF86Config
file could cause bad behavior if it's not accurate.

Mohammed:

It seems like there isn't a driver for this chipset. Is it very new?

If you look at the stuff at the end, U1 is never mentioned.

You might try the vesa driver, which should allow you to use X at some
pretty
good resolutions, though probably not GL.

I'd guess that there might soon be a new driver out to cover the U1,
possibly
in 4.4.0.

If you are feeling bold, you might even try the development drivers, though
of
course you need to be confident in what you are doing with the computer.

This seems to be a common problem on RH 9. I don't think
anyone knows why it happens yet. Somehow, some crucial XFree86
modules are missing. Reinstalling XFree86 is the only solution
I know of.

Mark.

[XFree86] Fatal Server error: no screens found...

2003-07-08 Thread DJ Crazy ASE
Hey Everybody,

So I'm taking a Linux class right now, but unfortunately, it doesn't
continue until next week, hence the question I pose to you today. Please
keep in mind, this might be a stupid newbie question...

I have installed Redhat Linux 8.0 on my Compaq Presario 1200 laptop. I
installed everything because we are learning how to use all features of
Linux for class. Anyways, during the end of the installation, I don't
believe they detected my screen or video card, which I have no clue what it
is. After the installation, i type startx in root, and it spits this out...

can someone tell me what to do? I don't even know how to get back to the
screen which you can change the monitor settings.

please keep in mind I have no Linux related exprience at all, so if you
could do me a favor and tell me exactly what to type, i'd really appreciate
it. like exactly what to type. Thank you in advance...and if someone has
some great sites to check out for newbies, i'd really appreciate it.
Thanks

RE: RE: [XFree86] Fatal Server Error in X Server

2003-06-26 Thread Cynthia Grossen
The link still works it just gets cut by the list software. Just add the
-tml back to the end of the line.

http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/RHL-9-Manual/ref-guide/s1-x-fonts.h
tml

You don't need to add those lines to your config file. However if you do,
this particular problem won't repeat. The link explains more about what you
just did to fix that problem if you're interested in learning about it.

Good Luck,
cyn

[XFree86] Fatal Server Error in X Server

2003-06-25 Thread Rohit Khanna
Saluta List,

I am running Red Hat 9 with rebooted my machine and my XServer is
not starting now(XFree86 Version 4.3.0 (Red Hat Linux Release
4.3.0-2))
I observed the /var/log/XFree86.0.log file very
carefully, the only important thing I observed is:

Fatal Server Error:
could not open default font 'fixed'
One idea I have is to remove all XFree86 Packages
reinstalling them from the CD by first trying the font
packages individually.
Can someone suggest something else.?
Well, I am a naughty boy, was trying to run one X
Server over the Other and it happened. I did not
realize that when I will reboot, I will face problems.
That Machine is not on Internet, neither do I have any floppy or
something so cannot send the complete
/var/log/Xfree86.0.log file

Any Help will be appreciated,
Sincerely
Rohit

Your font server has failed.

Here is a link to Red Hat documentation about the font server XFS

Service xfs restart may work, you'll have to be running as root and X
should not be running. The latter shouldn't be a problem. :) I'm not a Red
Hat user so maybe someone else can help you if you have more questions.

Your second choice is to add the font directories to your config file. This
is the preferred solution.

Add the following lines to the Section Files in the XF86Config file:

   FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled
   FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled
   FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled
   FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1
   FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo

RE: [XFree86] Fatal server error: no screens found

2003-06-05 Thread Cynthia Grossen
The error message is telling you that you either didn't configure X after
installation or the config file isn't located anywhere that X knows of.
(Generally in /etc/X11/XF86Config, but not always--for windows
especially.)

You can configure X in a number of different ways, XFree86 -configure is
probably the easiest.

XFree86 -configure
When this option is specified, the X server loads all video driver modules,
probes for available hardware, and writes out an initial XF86Config(5) file
based on what was detected. This option currently has some problems on some
platforms, but in most cases it is a good way to bootstrap the configuration
process. This option is only available when the server is run as root (i.e.,
with real-uid 0).
http://www.xfree86.org/4.3.0/XFree86.1.html

You may also need to use XF86cfg or XF86config. Read their manpages by
following the links in the above link.

[XFree86] fatal server error: no screens found

2003-03-20 Thread Joost ter Laak
Hi,

I have a problem that I can not fix. After startx I get the message fatal
server error: no screens found. I think it is the video card, I found a
help request of someone else that has the same problem as I have and he has
the same video chip
(http://forum.mlug.org.au/bbshowpost.php?bbsubject_id=177)

My system is a pentium 166 mmx, and my video card is:
vendor: sparkle (?)
chip set: S3 Trio64V2/DX

I use
linux: 2.4.18-14
distribution: red hat 8.0, (7.3 gives the same problem)

(See attached file: XF86Config.txt)(See attached file: XFree86.0.log)

Do you know a work around for this? After serveral evenings I currently has
given up trying and now think about bying a different video card.

[XFree86] Fatal server error

2003-03-09 Thread Delbert Guy Ferry
The attached log file shows the error I now get when trying to start the
x-server. This started to occur after I ran up2date to update the kernal
and some of the kde features. The file up2date.log is the relevant
portion of the up2date log which shows exactly which packages I downloaded
and installed. The server error started as soon as I rebooted my system
after the update.

What do I do to fix this error?

Hi,

I've bought a new hard disk recently; and tried making a clean install of SuSE 8.1.
I've had a problem with my screen configuration.

Suse installation determined these:
Monitor - vesa [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Graphics Chipset - Intel 82810E CGC

So the chipset is ok; but my monitor is IBM E74; which doesn't exist in sax2 monitor
db. I clicked change and modified the monitor config to replace it with ibm e74; using
the manufacturer floppy.
Then i clicked test after finalize; but sax2 gave me the following errors :
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (no such device)
(WW) I810(0): Config file hsync range 28-64 kHz not within DDC hsync range 30-69 kHz

So i gave up decided not to change monitor type. I left what suse determined.
Installation finished; and x-server didn't start. I logged in typed startx; which
gave me the following errors:

Yes, basically. You still need some more stuff, e.g. a window manager.
KDE or GNOME will start one.

I don't even know how to copy the file /var/log/XFree86.0.log to a

' man mtools ' or ' info mtools ' will give you some valuable

Put a DOS-formatted floppy into the drive. If ' mdir a: ' doesn't

A few more details would be helpful (monitor, graphic card, full XF86Config, full log)
However , from the parsing error and the fact that you are not using the standard
/etc/X11/XF86Config resp. /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 (which would be the RH 7.x version for
X 4.x.x) I
wonder whether you are not using an XF86Config which has a X 3.3.6 format rather than
the
different format for X 4.x.x (Check whether your config file has a Keyboard and
pointer section *
version 3.3.6* rather than two input device sections *version X 4.x.x*)

Okay, I'm a newbie - so this one should be simple?

I'm running QNX v6.2, I've downloaded and installed the XFree86 for QNX.

When I run startx, I get the following:

XFree86 Version 4.2.0 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600)

If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is
newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/)
Build Operating System: QNX6/Neutrino QNX Software Systems Ltd.
Module Loader present
Markers: (--) probed, (**) from config file, (==) default setting,
