maybe I can add some examples:

I am working on a container terminal simulation (might be any robotic
type simulation in that regard...) where I visualize the crane movement
during waggon loading and unloading movements (4 degrees of freedom:
along tracks, transverse to tracks, lifting/lowering, rotation about
z-axis).

I'm using both a SpaceMouse _and_ a regular mouse for my user
interface which already introduces the notion of distint foci:
Spacemouse for crane interactive movement, 2D-Mouse for viewpoint
manipulation at the same time.

Extension could be, to have two (or more) users manipulate two (or more)
distinct cranes at the same time, which easily leads to any kind of
gaming application.

Of course, giving several input devices to _one_ user makes handling
really tricky.

Piano players might have an advantage here... ;-)

Chris

You do further have an intel 845G chipset
with integrated graphics. The PCI bus scan
does not show any ATI Vendor IDs (0x1002),
so i must assume that you are running with
the integrated graphics enabled. This 0:2:0
is most likely the intel grafics device.

Try to switch that! Maybe you have to select your
prefered graphics in the bios for the primary adapter.
Or maybe its a jumper somewhere on your mainboard.
Refer to your system's manual.

[Xpert]font ghosting with geforce4mx

2002-12-02 Thread mk
We are seeing a strange problem with a bunch of new GeForce4 MX420-based
cards on Linux/x86, both with the XFree86 driver and with NVIDIA's
binary-only driver. While the overall display appearance is fine, text
characters in xterms or the xdm/kdm login window have a distinct shadow to
their right. We have tried different resolutions (the intended one being
1280x1024) and refresh rates, and both the stock 4.2.0 nv_drv.o and one
from a mid-october cvs snapshot to no avail. The same monitor (21"
viewsonic) apparently works fine when connected to a Matrox card (driven
by 4.2.0 with basically the same XF86Config settings). Is there
anything else i could try (Option "NoAccel" did not seem to help) ?

Okay. I understand that CVS is you-pays-your-money-and-takes-your-chances
grade software, though, so I'm prepared to be a crash test dummy. I've
got a working 4.2.1 installation around here somewhere if I need it.

In any event, thanks again for the tip.

[Xpert]Gigabyte ati radeon 9000 pro won't do dual head

2002-12-02 Thread Johan
I have been trying alot but i can't get my card doing dual heading.

When i specify no options to the fglrx driver i get 2 monitors with the
same content. But when i add some options like DesktopSetup 0x0201
the first screen gives the rigt view (half desktop) but the second goes
blank.

Has anyone figured out how to get the dual head working?

I am using firegl 2.5.1 from the ati site,
I have compiled the DRI CVS xfree version so i could have 3d support.

[Xpert]3d accelleration support

2002-12-02 Thread Noah L. Meyerhans
I'll admit that I don't pay super close attention, but it seems to me
that there's a growing trend among the top 3d chipset makers to provide
their own proprietary accellerated drivers for XFree86. ATI and NVidia
are the two examples I can think of, and it seems like they're the best
3d chipset makers.

I'm still using an older 3dfx Voodoo3 because I know that the full
programming specs are available and I can get open source accellerated
drivers for it. If I were to replace this card with another 3d card,
what would be a safe chipset to select if I want to stick with
open source drivers?

Thanks.

[Xpert]Trident Blade3D

2002-12-02 Thread Boris V. Bogachov
Hello,

Are there any known problems with the Trident Blade3D chipset?
I have a workstation running FreeBSD 4.7-STABLE and XFree86 4.2.0.
The graphic card is an AGP Trident Blade3D based card. The system
sporadically freezes when I try to work under XFree86 making it
almost impossible to run XFree86. The system almost certainly
freezes if I try to shutdown XFree86 or if I switch from/to text
console several times. I tried to replace the Trident Blade3D
based graphic card with a GeForce2 MX based one and all problems
were gone.

Thanks in advance.

[Xpert][OFFTOPIC] SA & MIME-attachments

2002-12-02 Thread Andy Sparrow

Hi,

(Apologies for top-posting, but the mail itself is only useful as an
example)

Instead of tagging all HTML-as-well email as probable spam, can't you
filter this through something like MIME-defang before SA?

This would not only avoid this particular tagging, it will also have the
added bonus that emails sent by people who don't realise they should be
sending plain text to a /mailing list/ (or that their mailer doesn't
send plain text by default) might actually get read by some %-age of the
audience that would simply have deleted them unread before...

Just my $0.02...

:-)

[Xpert]ATI driver that supports "Powered by ATI cards is out!

2002-12-02 Thread Kevin Oberman
For those who don't read /., here is a message from ATI on the
problems with the ATI driver on "Powered by ATI" cards:
"Terry Makedon (Senior Product Manager, Software for ATI Technologies)
writes "Last week we posted a set of unified Linux drivers. These
drivers were only loading up on 'Built by ATI' cards. Through our
various feedback mechanisms we have determined that there is a large
community of 'Powered by ATI' Linux users that did not benefit from
our Linux drivers. At this point we are happy to announce an update to
our Linux driver (ver. 2.5.1) which will work on both 'Powered by' and
'Built by.' ATI's driver and software strategy is firmly based on

For Red Hat Linux 8.0 - ATI Radeon 7500. Or, if you can live
without 3D until the next release, or until it is fully working
in rawhide - an ATI Radeon 8500

Thank you ATI! - was [Xpert]ATI driver that supports "Powered byATI cards is out!

2002-12-02 Thread Nat Ersoz
Thank you ATI.

I recently ordered a Dell Inspiron Laptop and upgraded the video card
from the default nVidia card to the ATI Radeon 9000 - a US$130 upgrade.
The sole reason for the upgrade was that ATI has been such a faithful
supporter of the XFree86 project.

I was very pleased that after installing the RPM released by ATI - which
was very easy to do - I was able to play "Return to Castle Wolfenstein"
on my laptop (mission critical app). Not only did it play smoothly, but
it played smoothly at 1600x1200 resolution (beautiful).

Of course Wolfenstein is not why I ordered the laptop - but it sure is
nice to get all the performance from the machine that I paid money for.
And it does perform beautifully!

Thanks again,

drivers. In addition, Matrox develops GPL drivers and a GPL version of
their Windows PowerDesk software.

While their 3D support isn't up to the bleeding edge of the NV/ATI
curve, my aging G400 card keeps up more than well enough. If
you want to drive a digital LCD or decode DVDs in hardware you'll need a
proprietary chunk of code linked into your driver - due to Macrovision
support.

They have a beta module out for Parhelia, haven't heard anything about
it. Seeing as they support most everything back to the G200 cards
though, I'd say quality support could be counted on.

[Xpert]Dual-Head on ATI Mobility 7500?

2002-12-02 Thread Hugh Caley
I have a new Dell Latitude 640 laptop, and would like to run a second
monitor from the SVGA output. This works fine from Win XP, but I can't
figure out how to get it to work under RedHat 8.0/XFree86 4.2. Is it
possible? The output, when it works, seems to be only mirrored. It
evidently uses an ATI Radeon Mobility 7500.

Between xf86, dri and gatos code is often merged, so that enhancements from
dri and gatos find their way to main xf86 eventually.

Yes, most of xf86/dri/gatos code is shared, but dri/gatos often offer more

It's a laptop video card:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV17 [GeForce4 440
Go] (rev a3)

It's just a port of http://cpbotha.net/dri_resume.html.
I only have a vague idea of what's happening but it has just worked for
me (maybe it simply workarounds some swsusp bug indeed...)

Without this patch xv does not work after you resume from a
swsusp'ended: the application are still able to use xv but the display
is no longer correct (for instance, mplayer only shows a blue window
after a swsusp restore, till I restart X).

Some problems with nv driver and swsusp were reported there too:

[Xpert]i815 drawing glitches and broken xvideo

2002-12-02 Thread Leif Jensen
I have long had some problems with xf86 on my Acer Travelmate 610 with
an i815em chipset. Recently I installed xf86 compiled from cvs in hope
of resolving the problems.

The two problems I experience are graphics glitches and broken xvideo.
Fortunately, GL is now working fine.

"Graphics glitches" refers to blocks in widget backgrounds or window
decorations that are rendered in the wrong color or with portions copied
from other parts of the display.

I have also long had a problem getting anything but a blue screen from
an xvideo display. The recent cvs ordinarily shows only a blue screen for
me, but it will show mis-scaled and mis-aligned video in full-screen mode.

To see screenshots and configuration information, you can go to

http://www.math.columbia.edu/~jensen/linux/xf86/

I would really like to resolve these problems, and this might benefit
many others too. If you have any suggestions or fixes, please let me
know.

Thanks for any help,

Leif

[Xpert]Help please: Can't get xawtv or /dev/video working

2002-12-02 Thread j
Hi,

I have been trying to get /dev/video to show up to no avail:

 This is xawtv-3.79, running on Linux/i686 (2.4.19)
 dlopen: /usr/lib/xawtv/conv-mjpeg.so: undefined symbol: jpeg_resync_to_restart
WARNING: Your X-Server has no DGA support.

v4l2: open /dev/video0: No such device
v4l2: open /dev/video0: No such device
v4l: open /dev/video0: No such device
 no video grabber device available

At this point I'm just going in circles. From one howto to another. The
kernel docs have been no help. I would be more than happy to RTM if I could find it!
Please help if you can. If only a pointer to a COMPLETE document on how to do this.

PS I can not turn on DGA without the Xserver crashing. That is why there is "no DGA
support". Actually just a sensible explanation of how DGA DRI and Xv work together
would probably help.

Thanks,

I am actually right now trying to get the documents right for Xnee 1.0,
which (I hope) will implement what you want to do (recording/replaying).

You can download the latest version from sourceforge.net if you can't
wait 1-2 days for the 1.0 version.

[Xpert]Non functional DRI

2002-12-02 Thread Mukhben Singh
Hi,
I have been struggling with it for almost a week now. I have
compiled the kernel over and over again, changed the X Config file
numerous times but still am not getting the expected results. To cut a
long story short, the frame rate in tuxracer is pathetic. Actually in the
log files, DRI and AGPart are reported to be enabled, but still glxinfo
returns Direct Rendering: NO and I guess that is why the frame rates are
so bad. Also the display in TUXRACER is garbled.
The new kernel which I compiled after applying the suggested (
suggested by Thomas who has written drivers for my vid card ) code for the
kernel frame buffer, seems to work fine except for a couple of modules
which are not related to video display ( supermount and sound ). I am
attaching all the relevant files.
System Details:

[Xpert]Double characters with Toshiba Satellite Pro?

2002-12-02 Thread Mark Williams
If I type too fast (which is not that fast) with my Toshiba Satellite Pro, I
get double characters. This is happening with a RH 8.0 install (XFree
4.2.0). Incidentally this happened under RH 7.3 too, though I don't know
what XFree that is.

Any ideas? I've tried loading the nVidia driver (this has a GEForcee 4), as
well as disabling things like glx, etc in the Load section... I don't know
what other hardware specs are useful to you...

An example of a sentence I type quickly: "Wwhhen will thiiss get resolved?"

Thanks

i have quite a beautiful xdm setup now... i have a background image and
i set all the colours of the xdm widgets to blend into the background
image... so it looks like there are no widgets...

to remove the lines, i set

xlogin*borderWidth: 0
xlogin*frameWidth: 0
xlogin*innerFramesWidth: 0
xlogin*shdColor: #3398cc
xlogin*hiColor: #3398cc
xlogin*background: #3398cc
xlogin*foreground: black
xlogin*greetColor: black
xlogin*failColor: red
*Foreground: black
*Background: #f0

where #3398cc is the colour which makes everything look transparent in
context to my background image... also i had to fiddle with the standard
XFree86 logo in order to remove some stray white pixels from the rim...
i turned the logo off in the end anyway, but if anyone wants the touched
up logo, let me know.

cheers,
Sam

[Xpert]Trident CyberBlade/i1 & MSI 6368

2002-12-02 Thread joost witteveen
I have 5 MSI 6368 Motherboards with onboard
Trident Microsystems CyberBlade/i1 (rev 106) chips.

I can run XFree 3.3.6 on them without problems, but XFree 4.1,
XFree 4.2, and XFree 4-CVS (from a few weeks ago) all fail.

Tried Linux 2.4.18 and 2.5.46 (same results)

When I start X, it seems to start fine, the screen blinks
(very breefly), and the monitor indicates it's in
1152x864 mode (the mode I specified in XF86Config).

However, then things go silent. No reaction to the Contr-Alt-F1
key combination (switch to linux VC), and the screen stays black.
(no pointer visable eighter).

Even stranger: a few months back, I bought the same MSI 6368
motherboard, same CyberBlade/i1 rev 106 chip on it, and it
runs Xfree 4.2 flawlessly. (I have booted them all as diskless
stations, mounting excactly the same directories with the same
XFree 4.2 distribution on them, so I doubt the cause could be
my configuration)

For those interested, I've put the XFree86.0.log file at
  http://iliana.komputilo.org/trident-cvs
and my XF86Config file:
  http://iliana.komputilo.org/XF86Config-trident0
output of `cat /proc/pci':
  http://iliana.komputilo.org/trident-proc

Is there anything I can do to test/help `real' programers
making XFree CVS run on them?
I'd be happy to try paches, running with more debug info, etc.

Thanks,
joost witteveen

[Xpert]Radeon 8500 + PowerPC = Yellowish tint

2002-12-02 Thread David Brown
Hi Everyone:

I've managed to get XFree86 4.2.0 built and running on powerpc. Using
the ati driver, 'UseFBDev', and the radeonfb kernel driver, the best
display I can get is 640x480 with most of the display tinted yellow.

Has this been reported yet? Is there anything I can do?

Thanks in advance,

I'm having trouble getting setxkbmap to work.

Here is what I'm doing:

I've asked on irc and someone said it always worked for them the 'second
time'. Others have said this was an issue when people had older libraries
(XFree86 3.3.6). I'm not sure what it is, but I'm running XFree86-4.2.

Please advise.

Maybe you could try to replace the trident_drv.so with the 4.1.0
version (of cause you will make a backup of the 4.2.1 driver). If this
helps, you can be sure that it's really a driver issue and blame Alan
for this. :-)

   Hello All

I am writeing an applications using Intrinsics, and can't
figure out how to extract the KeySym from a key event routine
once the routine is executed. I.e. I have:

 XtActionsRecedit_actions[] = {
 . . .
 . . .
 . . .
 {"KeyEventEditor"   , KeyEventEditor}
 };

 String edit_trans =
 . . .
 . . .
 . . .
 :KeyEventEditor()";

After a key event "KeyEventEditor" executes correctly and then
I want to find out what key had been pressed and act accordingly.

 "KeySym XtGetActionKeysym(event, modifiers_return)"

looks like a likely candidate but I can't figure out what or
where "event" comes from or how to point to it. The only information
that I have is:

event: Specifies the event pointer passed to the
action procedure by the Intrinsics.

and a grep through xc/programs just shows that nobody uses it.
Suggestions or pointers would be welcome.

Bruce

Whether it's appropriate for the xpert list to partipcate in the
social pressure aspect of DNSBLs (RBL is a trademark of MAPS BTW), or
not, I will not comment, but one of the reasons for building (some
at least) DNSBLs is to exact a social pressure on the owner of the
listed host.

If multiple BLs are listing a single host and that host is a regular
mail exchanger for a given domain, there must be good reason for the
multiple listings. Is the owner of said host doing all that he
should/could be to deal with the spam problem? Or perhaps the sending
IP is a "subscriber" IP of some sort. They should be using their ISP
assigned mail exchanger. Or maybe the sending IP has an open proxy
on it, etc.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.

[Xpert]i815 drawing glitches and broken xvideo

2002-12-02 Thread Leif Jensen
I have long had some problems with xf86 on my Acer Travelmate 610 with
an i815em chipset. I installed xf86 compiled from cvs from 2002-11-26
in hope of resolving the problems, but there are still some issues.

The recent cvs ordinarily shows only a blue screen for
me, but it will show mis-scaled and mis-aligned video in full-screen
mode.

To see screenshots and configuration information, you can go to

http://www.math.columbia.edu/~jensen/linux/xf86/

I would really like to resolve these problems, and this might benefit
many others too. If you have any suggestions or fixes, please let me
know.

Thanks for any help,

Leif

Hello!

The reason why I write to You is that I have a big

[Xpert]Multiple instances of X.

2002-12-02 Thread Karl Janmar
Hi!

I have patched two X servers one with custom usb keyboard
driver(http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/multiuser/) and no VT handling and one
will vanilla keyboard driver. However when I start the second instance of X it muck
with the first graphic card in the initialization by calling
hw/xfree86/common/xf86pciBus.c:pciIoAccessDisable() for the first device even when I
have put the BusID option in the device section. Maybe
hw/xfree86/common/xf86pciBus.c:FindPCIVideoInfo() shouldn't collect all avalible
graphic cards if a specific BusID is set in the device section. I have changed this to
only pick the searched graphic card, as it stop X from calling pciIOAccessDisable()
when it is checking other graphiccards. It work Flawless now.
I using XFree86 4.2.1.

No,, because most (all?) touchscreen hardware can only sense a single
point of touch. On the one I'm familiar with (Microtouch), placing
two fingers on the screen gives a touch coordinate approximately midway
between the two (but depending somewhat on the relative pressure applied
to each finger).

So on a touchscreen keyboard, any modifier keys (shift, ctrl, alt etc)
have to be locking, so you touch the modifier, then the key.

[Xpert]Re: i815 drawing glitches and broken xvideo

2002-12-02 Thread Leif Jensen
I have been trying to debug some problems with xf86 on my
i815-based laptop. After some searches I experimented with
a patch to the i815_driver.c file concerning the OVRACT register.

To test xvideo, a background consisting of the magic overlay
blue color is displayed over the whole screen while a video is
played using xvideo. The result is that coherent, quality video is
displayed, but it is displaced to the left of its correct position
by 542 pixels or so. Without the experimental patch, mis-aligned
and mis-scaled video is displayed only in full-screen mode.

I would very much like some advice on how to solve these video
problems. If someone can suggest the proper fix or a way to
tune the position where xvideo displays, I would be very grateful.

This testing has been done using the laptop LCD, and I will try
to perform some tests using the laptop's video out in the next
few days.

Patch and configuration information can be found at

http://www.math.columbia.edu/~jensen/linux/xf86/

Best,
Leif

[Xpert]xserver running as root

2002-12-02 Thread Aurelio Turco
The xserver (or Xwrapper) is suid root.
This is necessary to access certain privileged devices.

Now I have heard that, in conformance with good security
practices, the xserver quickly gives up its root privileges
as soon as it has opened those devices, by changing the
effective user back to the real user. However, when I run a
"ps -eo euser, ruser, cmd" the effective user still appears
to be root. Is this required behaviour? Is it not possible
to run the xserver as an ordinary user (under Linux)?

Cheers.
Aurelio.

Thoughts on it so far: Is it legal to hijack the si_code field for this
use? Where would the timestamp go that was talked about? Also,
shouldn't you be using list_add/list_del for those list things done?
