Re: [xubuntu-users] login on boot

2016-02-09 Thread fred roller
Have you tried
Menu -> All Settings -> (System) Users and Groups -> [your user] ->
Change... (next to "Password")

Uncheck "Don't ask for password on login" and set your password.

Re: [xubuntu-users] Further to "Mouse focus problem in 15.10"

2016-02-20 Thread fred roller
A couple of thoughts...

First, check the update logs from when you cleaned your computer out, seems
from your opening statement that's when it started... this should narrows
the list considerably.

Second, based on the last statements, sounds like a sticky button issue,
which, when swiching environments stops it until button 3 (?) is pushed
again... is there a way to monitor the mouse input live? (i.e. for a
keyboard I just type in a text editor until the culprit sticks)

Good morning
I have been trying to use a variant = tuxtrans -> xubuntu 14 based (I
think) because I wanted to try all those translation related features.
And I tried plain and simple xubuntu too.
HOWEVER, at every second automatic upgrade I "automatically" get the
error message that "/boot is full".
(I have been asking about this several times)

Then the ONLY way (I was told) to solve that issue is to go in there and
MANUALLY delete older kernel versions (scary!).
That takes time and some
computer knowledge - and is something I have
never seen with any other linux flavors.

Is there any chance, this annoying behavior has been corrected?
Because this definitely speaks against xubuntu being fast and useful.

Thank you
Thomas

Have you tried, from terminal:

sudo apt-get autoclean

I am looking at replacing my 17" Acer (constant freezes unresolved) with
another 17" and came across a HP Pavilion 17-g151cy. I am interested
whether anyone has any experience with any of the HP Pavilion 17" laptops
and Xubuntu. This page on the Ubuntu site:

shows HP is well received; however, I am not seeing any listing for the 17"
laptops, hence, my query. Any insight is welcome. Thank you.

While working on this script part have you tried

Programs --> Settings --? Mouse and Touchpad --> Touchpad (tab)

and check the "Disable touchpad while typing" option.

That aside... sounds like the script, xinput.." command needs to query the
device id so that it grows with the OS.

Lastly, perhaps the word struggling should be changed out with
contributing. You are correct that easier methods should be available for
many little tweaks and tricks used in any OS. As a community, we are the
R&D department for Linux. You are doing well to stick with it and your

What you have left now is just some troubleshooting. Start by seeing if
the command works without a hotkey, by typing the word touchtoggle
followed by the Enter key at the command prompt, and seeing whether it
turns on and off the touchpad. Make sure the touchtoggle file is
permissioned as executable by all. If it's permissioned executable for
all and still doesn't toggle the touchpad state, you need to start
experimenting with the individual "synclient TouchpadOff=0" and
"synclient TouchpadOff=1" commands at the command prompt.

Any specific information would help to troubleshoot. Computer, nic, what

to see if it is in fact a speed issue are just a cache issue between the

At this point I would run Thunar from cli... once open click the file and
see if it shows which config file, or such it calls to get the Audacity
option... this may or may-not reveal anything but worth a shot. Perhaps
this will give insight to a VLC failure and is just defaulting to
Audacity. Either way, may shed some light on the processes in your system.

Hello, welcome to the Xubuntu community! Glad to have you.

To find some useful games Click:

Menu button (upper/lower left) --> then Software (or Softerware Center)

This should bring up the software store/center. Enter solitaire in the
search window and hit return. This will yield a number of choices. My
personal fav is AisleRiot Solitaire. While their your Dad can look under
the games category and find several other mind exercising games he may
enjoy. Which ever games you choose just click the "Install" button and the
system will take it from there. You will find the games under

Menu --> Games

To uninstall any of them just go back to the same install location and
click the "Remove" button.

Hope this helps.

As for best way is a point of perspective. Timing would seem the issue with

Did you check under "All" option.. if not there you can add it via

right-click the menu -> Edit Application ->

click the Menu area you want it in...
click the + sign at the top of the window to add a launcher.
fill in the blanks and save.

[xubuntu-users] FYI Security patch linux

2016-08-10 Thread fred roller
Picked this up on the Fedora list. Just passing along as it pertains to all
of Linux. I have not implemented this patch as of yet on my Xubuntu system
until I fully read the paper, some 17 pages. Being a security issue
thought it best to at least put the info out. Discussion is more than
welcome as there seems to be some concern with increasing the ACK time.
This is not my area a specialty. Hope it helps...

\begin quote
Hi,

There is a severe security hole in TCP on the linux system. Here are
some extracts from an abstract of the paper about the weakness.

"Instead, they identified a subtle flaw (in the form of 'side
channels') in the Linux software that enables attackers to infer the
TCP sequence numbers associated with a particular connection with no
more information than the IP address of the communicating parties. "

This means that given any two arbitrary machines on the internet, a
remote blind attacker without being able to eavesdrop on the
communication, can track users' online activity, terminate connections
with others and inject false material into their communications.
Encrypted connections (e.g., HTTPS) are immune to data injection, but
they are still subject to being forcefully terminated by the attacker.
The weakness would allow attackers to degrade the privacy of anonymity
networks, such as Tor, by forcing the connections to route through
certain relays. The attack is fast and reliable, often taking less than
a minute and showing a success rate of about 90 percent. The
researchers created a short video showing how the attacks works.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4Ns5wla9DY

"The unique aspect of the attack we demonstrated is the very low
requirement to be able to carry it out. Essentially, it can be done
easily by anyone in the world where an attack machine is in a network
that allows IP spoofing. The only piece of information that is needed
is the pair of IP addresses (for victim client and server), which is
fairly easy to obtain," Qian said.

Qian said the researchers have alerted Linux about the vulnerability,
which has resulted in patches applied to the latest Linux version.
Until then, Qian recommends the following temporary patch that can be
applied to both client and server hosts. It simply raises the
`challenge ACK limit' to an extremely large value to make it
practically impossible to exploit the side channel. This can be done on
Ubuntu, for instance, as follows:

1. Open /etc/sysctl.conf, append a command
"/net.ipv4/tcp_challenge_ack_limit = 9".

2. Use "sysctl -p" to update the configuration.

The full paper is available here as a pdf.
http://www.cs.ucr.edu/~zhiyunq/pub/sec16_TCP_pure_offpath.pdf

How soon will we see a kernel in Fedora that has this fixed? Or is it
already fixed?

Thanks.
\end quote

Again, hope this helps. Further insight is welcome.

Shut down and hit esc once the icon shows so you can watch the shut down

If you are simply removing items from the favorites list (assuming this is
what you mean by "main list") then right click the item and choose "Remove
>From Favorites". Removing items from the rest of the menu sets I imagine
comes from the uninstalling of the software. Floating over the the
"Delete" option reveals the user does not have permission and Menulibre
will not run as root. This tells me the developers took measures to allow
the software to control it's own removal. I am just making an educated
guess at this point and someone else may be able to elaborate.  You can;
however, choose whether the items show up in the menu by turning ON/OFF the
"Hide from Menu" option on the individual items in menulibre. HTH.

I understand. Then the option to turn ON/OFF the "Hide From Menus" in
menulibre should at least remove the options from view. I had to log out
and back in because on the fly caused all the menu items to disappear when
I clicked save in menulibre, but all was fine the changes stuck once I had
logged back in.

In the menulibre you have to navigate to the individual item, in your case
mail reader. Then choose turn on "HideFromMenu" option per item. I did
this to be sure before I posted so I know it works. Please note that after
I had to re-log because a bug that hides all items when you try on the
fly. But once you re-log all is fine and your individual icon is hidden.

I agree that the convenience of the adding access to the cloud services
would be nice. Wouldn't a better request be to add the cloud services to
the current xfce settings manager. This would avoid the gnome dependencies
and keep the OS clean. Currently I use:

to mount google-drive. And while it works well enough, what I saw in yours

Gnome Control Panel is just a menu set... what program is being called and

The top bar with the time, etc, etc, is a Panel. Right click anywhere ->
Panel -> Panel Preference to make adjustments to the panel itself.

Right click any specific icon -> Move, will unlock that icon and "glue" it
to the mouse which can then be dragged along the panel to a new position
noted by a vertical bar in the panel for placement. Left click to release
and place the item in the new position on the Panel.

GUI tradizionale è disponibile in

Naturalmente ci sono i comandi da terminale disponibili pure.

if either is already mounted it should be showing in the file manager of
either distribution:

Menu -> File Manager

If you are looking from command line then most devices mount in the
"/Media" directory. List the directory with:

ls /Media/[username]/

example:

Two things:

Have you tried another music player to isolate the issue to gmusic browser
and have you tried running gmusic from command line and pipe the messages
to a custom log:

gmusic 1> ~/Documents/gmb_log

not sure of the exact command because my system purges the program and I
use rhythmbox so double check. This should start the program and if memory
serves the "1> ~/Documents/" should pipe the program messages to a file
named "gmb_log" located in your Documents folder. Play a song long enough
to repeat the issue, stop, exit the program. Look into the gmb_log and see
if any messages or errors stand out. I am assuming you are familiar with
command line and apologize if you are not; I can make this a bit more step
by step if needed. We just need to fish out some additional information
for troubleshooting. Also might want to try different audio file types to
see if it is a decoding issue.

According to this discussion:
http://forum.ubuntu-it.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=584038

" Gmusicbrowser on the official website it was written that the program
needs two packages: perl and gtk-2." He/she installed these programs and
seemed to clear their issue up. Audio is not my strong suite but seems
there are some missing backend support for your audio. I usually install
the restricted extras [be sure to understand the restrictions and
conditions] which seems to pull additional gstreamer software, I know
parole has consistently choked on gstreamer issues which is why I don't use
it. VLC is very hardy and forgiving so it surprises me it would have
issues. Would be curious to see what errors it has in playing [run from
command line again]; perhaps with verbose option for greater detail.

What file type is the music? If mp[?] have you tried converting to ogg and
tried playing it? Don't think it would make a diff because of the above
error, but you never know.

Another idea, if you are able to play on other systems; the Aspire, if it
is using the Intel chips may be using the Intel atom chipset to handle
audio/video... I had an Aspire; twice. The first w/ AMD served well for
nearly 8 years under Linux.  The second, the replacement with Intel, froze;
complete and none responsive. So bad it left no error logs. To the best
of my ability to troubleshoot and research I believe the atom chipset was
responsible. Might be worth looking into and then seeing if there are
supporting atom drivers for Linux on the Acer site or elsewhere.

I believe that System Settings --> Keyboard --> Behavior should have a
"Restore num lock state on startup" option. Make sure it is checked and it
should remember from there on. By the by, seems you did well in recovering
your system. Thanks for sharing, should help some poor soul. We tend to

Don't know about the file requirements right off; but, have you tried
adjusting the double-click timing?

All Settings --> Mouse and Touchpad --> Behavior

Double clicking time set to longer/higher time may make the laptop more
tolerable. Just a thought.

Eliminate choices by testing... If you are comfy with cli then:

opt 1:
$ sudo fsck /dev/sdz

where "z" is the drive letter for your external drive when mounted usually
found with the "df -h" command. "man fsck" for complete command
information.

opt 2:[1]
$ sudo apt-get install gnome-disk-utility -y

then once installed:
$ gnome-disks

which will bring up a GUI utility. Your disk should be listed. Click on
the disk and from the menu in the upper right choose the SMART check
option. This should give you a status and do a disk check if you use the
option in the lower left corner.

opt 3:[1]
$ sudo apt-get install smartmontools

then once installed:
$ man smartctl

this will get you the man page for the Control and Monitor Utility for
SMART Disks. From here you can find the options that best suits your
needs. I have not used this myself so read carefully.

Something tells me I should just do a final backup, brick the drive, and
> just start over.

You should backup in any case. Especially until you figure this out and
before you start running checks of software/hardware.

> Though maybe the current drive can be salvaged (it's only four years old
> -- do drives die that fast now?).

Three years is the average life expectancy but the actual life span is
measured in running hours which your disk brand's total life can be looked
up on the net. The SMART tools will tell you how many hours your disk has
on it which compared to its operational life span will tell you if it is
time to "brick" it. Also, being an external drive check connections and
idle functions. If it is an older spinner then the platters may just be
spinning down and the disk going to sleep which can cause a disconnect but
that is just a wag. Change out the cable, which if four years old too, may
have micro breaks in the line or build up on the contacts (use an eraser to
clean the leads if you can get to them.)

Another option is to back up the data and reformat the whole drive (Z out
the drive and start over). This should reset any software issues you may
have unless you want to troubleshoot the software. Search for firmware
updates for the disk as well.

Hope this helps and gets you headed in the right direction.

IMO; get the enclosure vs. a dedicated hdd... this allows for just
purchasing the drive as the enclosure will last longer in most cases.
about $40US for the enclosure. I recycle older drives with life left in
them which have come from laptops (i.e. I upgrade my my laptop to ssd and
now have a 1G platter drive with <100 hrs on it., etc.) for general use.
More sensitive data get put on more reliable drives which I purchase for
the enclosure or in my case I purchased a dedicated NAS of 4G.

Glad I could help. Good luck and get those back-ups done.

Re: [xubuntu-users] Is there a Linux Distro with MS Word Pre installed?

Ubuntu and it's spin off distros such as Xubuntu come pre-installed with
LibreOffice which import/exports to MS Word etc. MS Word in Linux would be
like trying to fit a Ford part in a Chevy... they simply are not made for
each other. There are solutions available to include but not limited to a
number of word processors such as LibreOffice and OpenOffice. My
experience in helping people start with Linux is that Xubuntu tends to be
the least troublesome most intuitive distro available for new users. The
Software Center makes it easy to install and uninstall a variety of
applications so you can fit the system to your needs. There are solutions
available to get MS software to work on Linux but that is a discussion for
another time but they do exist. Good luck in your search.

In my experience the largest culprits for slow systems is primarily the
amount of cache on the processors, ram, and these days ssd vs hdd. Cheap
computers = low cache in most cases because lvl 1-3 cache is expensive and
1-2 are usually built into the processing chip itself (think Celeron).
Linux of most flavors tend to do well with RAM but as mentioned, some
programs will suck it all up in a flash. Montior with the cli command "top"
and you can get a good idea of what is using what. The old rule of 2x was
true but my current system has 50% (4Gb swap w/ 8Gb RAM) and barely
utilizes half of the swap. I have 4 "desktops" with and average of 4-6
programs per desktop running on a single laptop system. SSD has given the
most significant jump in speed since I don't have to wait for platters to
spin up to speed. Digging into your system should reveal some tweaks to
get some speed out of it and old timer tricks like on platter drives (hdd)
you can put your boot partition and swap way up front in the sector count
and the less active data near the end of the sector count. At this point I
realize I ramble but you get the point. Ubuntu was originally designed for
old low end systems in Africa where they didn't have the best to work with
and the students needed access to technology. I agree with Peter, watch
the memory hogs and if necessary use alternatives, that's the beauty of
Linux, you have choices.

Maybe they could finally start rolling out photonic technology and
alleviate the need for RAM and CACHE memory. Hard drive access would be at

Re: [xubuntu-users] virtualbox issue with linux/version.h and shared folders between guest and host

2017-01-24 Thread fred roller
Quick question on the share... Why not a sshfs share between the host and
guest? Both are Linux and don't need the extra load to communicate. Since
my guest systems are bridged nics I can link via standard practice and
sshfs has been the best generic solution with only installing the ssh and
sshfs package. If ssh is not desired then other Linux solutions to mount
remote folders should work as well since both systems are already on the
same network. Hypothetically using the inet (internal network function of
Vbox) should still work if security is an issue. Pardon my ignorance, but
seems like a lot of trouble here for something that is native to Linux so I
am just curious as to why? To be sure, these share folder options did help
when I was working on Windows guests; however, Linux to Linux seemed best
to just use the tools available.

I have had good success with every generation of Xubuntu on Dells I have
installed with my clients when I used to consult. Nothing of great note
comes to mind as unsolvable obstacles on desktops. There laptops seemed to
do good as well with the only issue tending to be WiFi, but WiFi
integration has come a long ways since. The only issue I have found lately
has not been with Dell specifically but rather anything running the Intel
atom processor for a graphics card, generally noted as built-in graphics on
Intel boards (you have to dig a little to see it is an Atom chip.) These
chips have (last year) consistently froze the system without warning or
error. Brand did not matter. HIH.

2017-05-13 Thread fred roller
Joao, excellent points you made. I am not a programmer. My intro to Linux
came when I converted my entire office (back when I had an office) to
Linux. Trial and error, I landed here with Xubuntu as the hands down,
overall, easiest distro to deal with for new users. My contribution is
more on the ground helping new users get to know and understand Linux.
Windows, for all it's conveniences comes with a hefty price between ad
intrusion and security practices I do not agree (i.e. default admin user
whether password is set or no.)

The Linux community has a more than functioning level of ready made
software and continues to refine the interface. Help with Xubuntu has
always been better and faster overall than commercial. I dare say, most of
the technology I see in use; PC, laptops, tablets, routers, phone systems,
phones, software, etc. etc. is either straight up Linux or inspired through
the work of the volunteers. Glad you are on board and hope the journey is
as fruitful for you as it has been for myself. The key about Linux IMHO is
it opens choices; choices one must intelligently decide.

I love your passion for this subject. Can I invite you to look into the
help channel to contribute your insight.

This is the generic "Get Involved" page. https://xubuntu.org/contribute/
the two areas which you may be interested is the Documentation and Quality
Assurance. We are just folks, some have incredible programming skills and
the rest of us have our own particular strength to contribute. Hope you
can look into the help system, sounds like they could use you.

Seems a permission issue somewhere. You can check the tempfs /run/lock,
which I believe synaptic uses. Also, might check the list file
"gd.tuwien.ac.at_opsys_linux_ubuntu_archive_dists_xen" for permission
issues as well.

Re: [xubuntu-users] No indication of disk checks at login

2017-05-19 Thread fred roller
My 2 bits so take with a grain of salt.

Have you confirmed there is no indication. If not then maybe the following
can help...

REM /etc/default/grub.conf line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" to
#GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

which should disable the splash at start up and allow a clean text scroll
during boot with out all the button pushing.
Then you can reset the fsck interval to *1* for one of your drives with

tune2fs -c 1 /dev/[one of your drives] (i.e. tune2fs -c 1 /dev/*sda*)

which will set the interval for every boot (just so we can check for the
indicator)
then reboot your system. If the indicator you want appears with the
options you want then reset grub splash and rerun the tune2fs command with
an interval you want (30 is default).
This is assuming you have a comfortable understanding of command line and
config files, let us know if you need clarification.

If the indicator does not show, let us know and we can take it from there.

Re: [xubuntu-users] Monitor switching hotkey?

2017-05-23 Thread fred roller
Typically the catch process for what you experienced is time. If the
external monitor blanked because of setting conflict then the confirmation
window, which would pop up, would time out after 30 seconds I believe. If
you have not confirmed to keep changes then the system would revert to the
previous setting. If this did not happen then there may be a bug.
Additionally, you should have on your laptop function keys which will cycle
monitor settings. Mine is fn+F10 on a Lenovo. The cycle should be
laptop, mirror, external, extended in most cases if memory serves.

Re: [xubuntu-users] Marking a text file as executable

2017-05-23 Thread fred roller
| The text file starts with #! /usr/bin/wish

This line is for the script itself to use the "wish" or WIndowing SHell
program to run the script. As long as it is installed and in the /usr/bin/
directory the script should run. As mentioned you need to set the
execution bit as described above. And, running from the command line,
unless the script is in a predefined $PATH location you will need to
precede the command(script) with a "dot-slash" ./ if you are in the same
directory

./nameofscript

or use the absolute path to the command.

for it to execute /after/ setting the execution bit. I bare in mind also
you are looking for a GUI solution to run the program but I don't see one
right off short of right click --> Open with other application and choose
terminal emulator way down at the bottom of the list, option. I don't
recommend this as it may not leave the shell window open when it executes
and you may miss critical feed back from the script. Running from CLI is
painless and better at this point IMO.

Hi Gustavo,
I have Thunar. The move to trash option does not prompt but is
unnecessary IMO as you can retrieve it from the bin. The Delete option,
which will permanently remove, does confirm the deletion. Command line has
an option to prompt before removal:

rm -i or rm -I

from cli:
man rm

in the cli option you can script or create an alias to make this automatic
with say 'rc' for remove and confirm. Here is a handy howto for aliases:

Gustavo, thank you for the clarification. Perhaps the Dolphin file manager
has the option you are looking. I agree with Joao though. Change takes
time and they will learn and adding things bloats the software. I used to

patients. That said, you have options and Dolphin appears to be one.

Re: [xubuntu-users] Re.: Re.: Background

2017-06-21 Thread fred roller
When I set up a PC lab for a homeless non-profit my fix was to let them log
on with the Guest account. The Guest account's skeleton file is what got
customized and did not require a password. They could change things in
part but changes where lost as the Guest account reset on the next log-in.
It had the added benefit of being a lot more restricted than even the user
account. For the volunteers I set up a LDAP access so they could log on
any system on the network. It was a bit of a work around but worked well
enough.

Another possibility I started to play with was to cluster all the PCs and
create a thin client/server environment. This puts permission
establishment in the user profile on the server and the PC becomes client
work stations. Users could customize all they wanted or as little as you
let them if memory serves, the profile followed them. You need a fairly
robust network for this option though because of the traffic requirements.

I have seen kiosk style setup where the log-in went straight to program and
when the program ended the user was logged out. In this scenario you could
set up Moodle, an open source course ware, that the students are prompted
to log into and the underlying system is never seen.

And depending on the environment and age group of your students you could
put Sugar on the system, which is designed specifically for what you are
trying.

My two bits, HIH.

Though it has been awhile this link should get you headed in the right
direction.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CustomizeGuestSession

There is plenty of info out there to fully customize and restrict users.
My toughest was computer systems in a half-way house. Half a dozen
programs for job searching and locking down surfing to trusted only sites
with a dns filter from OpenDNS. Just so you know it can be done and the
information is out there.

Also, if you set UID to < 1000 it will not appear in the available login
list. I used this to hide my admin accounts on client systems. Use
"Other..." option to login into the hidden accounts. Students would only
ever see "Guest"

I agree. Did many-a-hard drive recoveries. A live usb or cd/dvd would
give you all the tools you want to affect repairs or data recovery.
Another option is Wubi:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide

which can be put on the windows machine via an .exe file. Do what you have
to do and uninstall. Granted this puts Ubuntu, the parent of Xubuntu, on
the system but is an option and gets us a command line. If you need more
tools on a live boot option then the Knoppix live or SystemRescueCD would
do nicely and both have GUI:

http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html
http://www.system-rescue-cd.org/

If you have a smart phone available there is an IRC Client on
Android/Iphone. There are at least a dozen programs available if all you
want is to get to the chat channel for help. Ppl here are happy to help
though, we want you up and running on your Xubuntu system.

I concur. Unless there is a compelling reason to keep the current
configuration a rebuild is the path of least resistance here. If the data
is an issue either pull it out to an external drive or gpart a partition
for the migration where you can tuck the data you want to save. If it is
just a challenge you want to take then, well, lets have some fun.

Joao, welcome to Linux and in particular Xubuntu.

If you are looking for network back-up AMANDA is an option I had good luck
with when I did such things.

As Francois pointed out "rsync" is an easy solution.

for instructions from command line:
man rsync

I can also agree with Ralf in that Linux is not for everyone. My personal
observations suggest that is mostly a function of training by marketing of
the end user. They expect to see proprietary environment and to try and
emulate that will only end in failing to meet that expectation. We are an
easy to use, easy to maintain distribution that does the end user to take

Read:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_kernel

Linus wrote a kernel to help his students and long story short gave it to
the world. The FOSS community adopted it and now we have diversity. The
arguments to reduce this diversification is in error I believe. There are
a wide variety of restaurants that serve the simple purpose of feeding us.
If you had the choice of only 2 or 3 dining out would get old and the joy
of dining with friends would soon diminish. Having used a number of
distros and FOSS you can build with the core data segregated and allowing a
switch from this to that until you find what you like and/or go to
another. As for the loss of support, your favorite restaurant doesn't stay
open forever, doesn't mean you stop going out or don't go looking for a new
place. The joy of discovery is, IMO, part of the charm of Linux.

Agreed. Having been an author of sorts myself the monumental effort that
goes into writing, esp. a technical manual for end users on a subject which
is in constant flux is no easy task. By the time the first couple of
drafts were done it would be in danger of being obsolete. Try to understand
the necessity of word choice and document structure as similar to the
number of tweaks used in programming to make the software more efficient
and the use of resources (memory, processes, etc.) economical. The devil
is in the details.

My condolences for your loss.

I am at best anymore a power user. My introduction to Linux was back in
2005 when I removed all Windows OSs from my consulting business and
switched. Burning the boats as it has been referred forced me to learn as
I directed that ALL solutions to our needs would be found or created within
Linux/FOSS. We managed a high 90's percentile in finding solutions for
everything within the Linux/FOSS world. The biggest is just finding the
information resources that get you going towards a solution. I am bad
about pulling dated documentation by normal standards to solve issues but
they act as good springboards to finding a solution.

I have my favs for finding howtos and solutions i.e. linuxcommand.org for
a primer/refresher on cli basics, howtoforge.com for a number of solution
across a number of distros, www.tldp.org for The Linux Documentation
Project, stackoverflow.com for the more advance solution just to name a few
resources. The issue then is not so much a lack of effort in this segment
of help guides as it is a lack of cohesiveness. But then again, has anyone
tried to navigate the Windows site for solutions?

I agree. Patience is not always apparent in the forums. The
diversification of hardware and issues makes each issue it's own unique
problem. This can take time to solve when you have to go through the
battery of know fixes based on assumptions just to help the OP develop
their questions to something specifically answerable. Still, compared to
the help call centers and delay of response from propriety make our effort
more reactive and solutions tend to be faster as a whole in my experience.
I have spent the 2-3 hours on the phone, mostly on hold, waiting to be told
to restart my system.

save some $$$. Why is it assumed that all laptop users wants MSWindows?

Because Windows pays them to put it on the system and to remove it would
actually drive up the cost. See:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bundling_of_Microsoft_Windows

You could however do one of several things: Ask for the $$ when you remove
the OS (I think law requires in some cases to refund, but you have to
ask.), Just delete the disk when you build and remove ALL partitions, or my
personal fav, Buy an extra HD (the stock one is usually too small for me
anyways.)

In the last one it has the advantage that when I remove the drive before
first start up I can save it. If I switch to a new system in a couple of
years I can put the drive back in and sell/give it to someone and it is
like a new purchase.

Android/IOS is your unified future. As phones/tablets gain power and
popularity and technology creates integration, you will soon carry your
"PC" core in your pocket and drop it in the environment of choice for
use...

- Home: cast to tv for monitor and input devices on rf or bluetooth ( a
Microsoft product as I recall). Also, we already have smart homes and the
accompanying apps you can load on your ... phone or tablet.
- Car: already exists to wireless-ly integrate with the modern cars'
console. and technology to retro integrate with older cars.
- Work: Conceivable and similar to Home with security access, like keys,
integrated into the phone/tablet and companies using shared workstations
activated with phone/tablet. I had started working on similar using USB
sticks.

Phone/Tablets, like laptops, are close to outpacing our current PC/Laptop
models. They provide the convenience of portability and ease of use. How
many computer "illiterate" people you know can zip through their phone like
a pro. At least Android is rooted in Linux. How long before Google
decides to cut to the chase and put the android core on ROM to
significantly cut the lag (relatively speaking) between flash drive and
processor. To this FOSS may migrate, if not already doing so, to the apps
development for this model. Even the phone will have a limited life of
less than a generation if the technology for the "wrist phone" (not the
watch) develops, which projects the phone interface on your wrist and
sensors detect finger placement for touchscreen functionality. I dare say,
this future was brought on by one teacher's desire to give the world a
functioning kernel and a dedicated group who thought information should be
freely (libre) available and accessible through freely (libre) available
software. The proprietaries would have still been milking the PC market
IMHO.

FWI, this article should shine some light into the process:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI

Ubuntu being the parent to Xubuntu should clear some information up.
Personally, if you had it to spare I would pull the original HDD and put
another in (any small HDD of 50GB+ would do) to at least practice the dual
boot unless you can protect the recovery partition. In Linux avoiding it
is usually straight forward. Wish I had more info. I burned all my
Windows machines some time ago and went with Linux like Cortez and his
ships. I have helped business clients build dual boot systems, though it
has been a minute. HIT.

Any error messages? When you pull up the print que what is the status of
the documents? In my experience Cannon took some work to get it working
correctly. On the driver CD or in the driver package (assuming you got one
from Cannon) there was usually a Readme file to set up with Linux. Check
for that. Also, double check your specific model on Google with something
like "Cannon [model] printer on Xubuntu". Someone usually has a write-up
step by step having been through this. Without more specifics, model,
laptop, any error messages etc. our help is limited but we will help you

of your printer?

>From what you showed me the file above is not being found. Did you get the

the file or know the absolute path. The former is easier. If you are not
yet comfortable working from command line I suggest
http://linuxcommand.org/index.php he offers a great primer on linux command
line, gratis. Once you have the file the rest should work; but, make sure
you match your model. Also, how is the printer connected (wireless, usb,
network)?

On the disk, look in the Win directory and see if you can find the .ppd
file for your printer, sometimes it ships with it accessible.. If so, you
can try to copy it to a local working directory (like Download) and re-try
the add printer option. Which, I hate to ask, did you try the add printer
from the system folder?

Menu -> Settings -> Printers

We will get you there, just building a picture in my head on what you have
tried and what is happening. I am most familiar with network installs but
it shouldn't matter as long as the system can see your printer to install
it.

Re: [xubuntu-users] Installation questions

2019-04-08 Thread fred roller
My experience with the hybrid hdd/SSD was to partition main storage (data
being less sought) on the hdd and, if memory serves me, put the boot
partition on the hdd. I wasn't overly concerned with boot time since I
rarely booted. What went on the SSD was anything that needs fast access etc.

Personally, I put the few extra $$ in a 10k rpm hdd to help offset a bottle
neck. Since then I moved to a pure SSD system and moved the 5 Tb of media
to a network storage device. The one I bought supports ssh mounting and ais
easily seen as just another directory.

My 2 bits. HIH.
