[Zappa-List] Re: Zappa transcriptions?

2008-12-03 Thread Guy
I was unable to find any link for the pdf on the zappateers site but
I recall the cover was done by Cal Schenkle.
I could'a sworn there actually was a Vol.2, but I will defer to you
sir.

were one
or two of these books of transcriptions in
the 70s that I believe were produced with input from FZ, esp. as
evidenced

There's only one of those, despite the Vol. 1 in the title.
It can be found on Zappateers in PDF-format:
 http://www.zappateers.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=3231

The one with transcriptions by Steve Vai is The Frank Zappa
Guitarbook from
 1982:
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Frank_Zappa_Guitar_Book

Both titles are getting harder to find, but I was lucky enough to
score (pun

year.

[Zappa-List] Re: Zappa transcriptions?

2008-12-02 Thread Guy
Frank released(I think)two soft cover song books in the '70s.
They were not nearly as detailed as The Beatles scores, but I'd love
to still have them now.

Was anything done for Frank Zappa's work from his recordings? His
rhythm and use of
harmony would be a very interesting study!

2008-10-08 Thread Guy
Allan,
At this point, this is no longer a vine. The vine, as you said, ran
its course and you were offering it up to any takers.
If you want to start another vine, post a VO (vine offer).
Or you could enter it into the Orphaned Vine List, then anyone that
wanted it could request it from you without starting another vine...
sort of how you offered this up.

[Zappa-List] Re: Ruth Underwood

2008-08-09 Thread Guy
I think that clip is from the VH1 Classic Albums dvd. That edit
dissolves to her playing St Alphonso just as she was saying that the
sheet music she was displaying was hastily dashed out by Frank in his
own hand, and was just beautifully executed.
In the various interviews of alumni that I've seen, Ruth Underwood and
George Duke had the sweetest, most complimentary and respectful things
to say about Frank.

[Zappa-List] From today's New York Times Arts Leisure section

2007-07-08 Thread Guy
From the article There Once Was A Record Of Smut...

...Journalists railed against the abuse of a great invention. Soon
Anthony Comstock, the crusading founder of the New York Society for
the Suppression of Vice, was on the trail of indecent cylinders,
chasing down distributors and even performers. On June 24, 1896, one
of Comstock's detectives came to Hunting's Manhattan home, posing as a
fancier of naughty songs. Hunting custom-recorded two cylinders for
his visitor, was promptly arrested and was sentenced to three months
in prison for violating obscenity ordinances that normally governed
written literature and visual images.

Sound familiar?

Like a tidal wave of total weirdness, the Mothers of Invention
splashed down on the Fillmore West for a series of shows in
November
of 1970 before washing back into the seedy ocean of L.A., leaving
the landscape forever changed (or at least confused and offended).

Not to be outdone by the art school drop-outs and buck-skin
fringe
contingent then wandering the Sunset Strip, Frank Zappa had been
steadily releasing incredibly strange records since the mid-‘60s.
He abandoned the original Mothers at the close of that decade, only
to reform a different line-up under the same name in 1970, this
time
including two members of the Turtles, Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman
(sometimes known as Flo Eddie due to contractual problems), to
help with Frank’s increasingly bizarre comedy routines and,
almost
 incidentally, singing.

The opening set by Boz Scaggs couldn’t possibly have prepared
anyone for what was going to occur that night at the corner of Van
Ness and Market, though it did prove that Bill Graham had a pretty
good sense of humor. Eager to try out material from the upcoming
200
Motels film and accompanying album, the Mothers don’t move in any
one direction for too long; sometimes it’s as if they’re moving
in all directions at once. There are hints of jazz-fusion and
psychedelia, along with Zappa’s beloved doo-wop. They even make a
brief stab at the Turtles’ Happy Together as part of the
groupie-
baiting sleaze-fest Daddy, Daddy, Daddy. This is a limber bunch,
but they’re at their best when playing it straight (Call Any
Vegetable from Absolutely Free is a prime example). Some songs are
derailed by excessive hollering and dialogue, the delivery of which
suggests the performers are nearly as bored as the audience
they’re baffling. Provoking the crowd, however, is part of the
plan and listening to Frank scold them for their indifference is
highly satisfying for anyone who’s ever stood under stage lights.

An appreciation for this performance depends entirely on one’s
threshold for long and noodly instrumental explorations accented by
dick jokes. But it can safely be said that no one else was doing
anything quite like this at the time. During an age of weird, Frank
Zappa had the distinction of being the unparalleled weirdest.

If there is enough interest in the MOI show at the Fillmore West on
11-06-70, I will offer this up as a vine. What I did was record the
show as presented on the Vault site, and then edited out the breaks
between tracks to make one continuous show, and then burned it to
Audio CD.

Please keep in mind that what they are currently presenting on the
site are MP3s, so that's only as good as this CD is going to get. But
until they offer something better, I have to tell you it's pretty
good - especially if you like the Flo and Eddie era Mothers.

So let me know if there's interest - I'll start the vine off here -

Like a tidal wave of total weirdness, the Mothers of Invention
splashed down on the Fillmore West for a series of shows in November
of 1970 before washing back into the seedy ocean of L.A., leaving the
landscape forever changed (or at least confused and offended).

Not to be outdone by the art school drop-outs and buck-skin fringe
contingent then wandering the Sunset Strip, Frank Zappa had been
steadily releasing incredibly strange records since the mid-‘60s.
He abandoned the original Mothers at the close of that decade, only
to reform a different line-up under the same name in 1970, this time
including two members of the Turtles, Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman
(sometimes known as Flo Eddie due to contractual problems), to help
with Frank’s increasingly bizarre comedy routines and, almost
incidentally, singing.

The opening set by Boz Scaggs couldn’t possibly have prepared
anyone for what was going to occur that night at the corner of Van
Ness and Market, though it did prove that Bill Graham had a pretty
good sense of humor. Eager to try out material from the upcoming 200
Motels film and accompanying album, the Mothers don’t move in any
one direction for too long; sometimes it’s as if they’re moving
in all directions at once. There are hints of jazz-fusion and
psychedelia, along with Zappa’s beloved doo-wop. They even make a
brief stab at the Turtles’ Happy Together as part of the groupie-
baiting sleaze-fest Daddy, Daddy, Daddy. This is a limber bunch,
but they’re at their best when playing it straight (Call Any
Vegetable from Absolutely Free is a prime example). Some songs are
derailed by excessive hollering and dialogue, the delivery of which
suggests the performers are nearly as bored as the audience they’re
baffling. Provoking the crowd, however, is part of the plan and
listening to Frank scold them for their indifference is highly
satisfying for anyone who’s ever stood under stage lights.

I have promo buttons, postcards, promo 8x10 glossys, a very rare
unused early '80s promo sticker from Maxima gold strings with FZ's
photo as well as Warren Cuccurullo's photo. It also comes with one
of the gold strings in it's original package - unused.

Lots of magazines with FZ on the cover with interviews, books and

 ebay soon. Happy holidays

This one is on it’s way to SOFA who will hopinate a bit later. I
added Mark M who tried to sign up but sent his email to me. Anyone
else should sign up now before hopination occurs. I put the setlist
with art links in the files section. I took the liberty of adding one
bonus track at the end of disc 3. Chunga’s Revenge from the ZPZ
show at RAH. It wasn’t in the set list on the 21st of May and there
was plenty of room. This will be a Zappa List exclusive ;-)

[Zappa-List] Re: Please wait VO - Zappa Halloween QuAUDIOPHILIAc DVD audio discs burned to CD Audio

2006-06-04 Thread Guy
That's understandable and reasonable Jim.
I do own these and have been bothered that I can't play them
anywhere other than my livingroom.
So I'm OK with keeping it to other A-DVD owners just looking to dub
to a different format for convenience.
If I recieve these, I'll follow that path.

--- In Zappa-List@yahoogroups.com, Jim L [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Fellow Zappa fans please conceder this before lunching this vine.
While I
fully understand everyone's wish to share these fine works we are
crossing a
line here. These are not bootleg recordings but official releases
and there
not even that old. The fact that they were released on DVD Audio
instead of
CD Audio doesn't mean that we can avoid getting in trouble for
having a vine
of them. Might I suggest that everyone interested contact each
other off
list with this one? It's a line I don't want to cross myself and
this email
list is in the public domain. On the other hand if someone already
owns the
DVD then in my mind supplying a CD version should be alright. I'm
not so
sure that the ZTF or the RIAA see it that way even if they should
however.

Ok, so i'm curious about the relationship between Zappa and Yoko
Ono. I
 know the history
of the Sometime In New York battle and how Zappa was pissed that
they
 changed the title of
his song and added songwriting credits, but i'm one of those ones
who likes
 ono (please no
bashing). I am curious because she is qouted in the Relix issue
with Zappa
 in it, and I know
he thanked her in the Yellow Shark booklet. I also know, however,
that he
 put out the song
An Eternity with Yoko Ono on Playground Psychotics. Anyone know
anymore
 about their
 relationship?

  Commentary from

  30-Oct 1976,
  116 min, Aud, A-
Speed problems and gradually worse sound near the end.
  31-Oct 1976,
Early show: 110 min, Aud, A-
Late show: 130 min, Aud, B+

Commentary from me: I think there may be some wires crossed
here; the Late show 1031 has the speed problem, and B+ is
generous... If 1030 has any problems, I've not caught them.
My plan is to not Pond Skip; US viners will be exhausted
 before it goes abroad...

This one went out to Guy this morning as 2 audio CDs. Not the very
best
sound quality but probably a strong B+ to A-. The performance is a
little
different from the average. (if there is an average) Frank tells
the whole
story of The Illinois Enema Bandit in this one. I never knew it
was a true
 story ;-)

It took a while to get the last two tracks but I guess it's the

I'd be interested in aquiring both (but definately the 31st).

[Zappa-List] Re: Frank Zappa/Grace Slick?????????????????????????

2006-03-24 Thread Guy
The show with Joni's appearance was my first FZ show (Fillmore
program scans in photos section). As I remember it, while reciting
this thing about Penelope with the band playing one of Frank's
beautiful two chord vamps behind her, Joni said ...I fuck the
sea., then started some nice harmonizing along with Mark Howie as
Frank soloed over it all. I'd LOVE to hear a recording of that show!

Yeah, you've got to really listen for it - which is why I said the
show could stand some tweakage. The instruments come thru fine, the
vocals are there about 75% of the time; it's the asides that need
boosting, but there are a lot of them.
 Still, an excellent show...
Now, if only someone would come forward with the other show from
that 2-night run featuring Joni Mitchell reciting Penelope wants to
fuck the sea...
 A Grail, of sorts.

[Zappa-List] Re: New To Group with Questions-

2006-03-20 Thread Guy
Just a little Zappa/Varese sidenote.
At a Carnegie Hall show (don't remember if was the Mothers or Grand
Wazoo), a buddy and I gave Frank a Varese LP at the start of the show
and Frank said (something like) Ahh, Integrales and Ionisation. Very
cool. Thanks for the album. He handed it off to Bald Headed John who
stayed very close to Frank as we approached the stage.

Hey folks, have been a fan since the seventh grade (1969)when I

Have been a hard core fan since. Only got to see Frank live five
times (six, if you count the two back to back shows on one night)
when I came of age in Austin,Texas. Regretfully, never saw him with
 Ian Underwood.
I am finally buying Zappa on CD and am dividing my purchases
between
classics and the flood of posthumous work coming from Ryko etc.
Here's my 1st question- I bought the Lather box set. When playing
it
on my PC, often the titles appearing are not actually those
playing.
Is this an FZ joke from the grave? I remember when first obtaining
Absolutely Free on vinyl, experiencing my frustration in that the
grooves that usually separated the tracks were offset making it
impossible to start a compostion on cue- later on I would laugh
thinking this was FZ's way of fucking with the DJs and making you
listen to his work by the side/concept rather than by the single.
Question 2- Anybody know of any interesting sources for Ian
Underwood or Don Preston? I have been to Don's site, emailing himn
from there has provoked no response. I would like to order some of
his and Bunk Gardners CDs but do not want to send money if the
 operation is defunct.
Question 3- what is a vine?
Question 4- any Varese fan's out there? I see on Overstock.com that
there will be a Varese biography available there soon.

about Zappa's early influences? Please.

I'm on a Music course at a College (NW England) and have opted to
do a
short (approx 10 mins) presentation on Zappa's early musical
influences.

Rather than list the four influences I had in mind I'd like if
anyone
here might offer their thoughts on the matter.

Maybe I should mention that I am classed as a Mature student
having
actually seen Zappa touring during the 1970s, and am also
reasonably
well up on his Recorded Output. I'm really looking for other
people's
opinions to attempt to make my presentation both as concise and
interesting as I am able in the time allowed.

As a new member I suppose I should search the Message archive
first to
see if this has aleady been discussed at length before launching
this
thread, but I've become another lazy student.

   Thanks in advance.

[Zappa-List] Wild Man Fischer documentary film dErailRoaDed

2005-11-04 Thread Guy
Opened yesterday in Manhattan. From a review in the NY Times by
Stephen Holden:
[Not everyone who watches this sad, disturbing film with its flashy,
animated embellishments will agree that what Mr. Fischer does is art,
whether outsider or any other kind. Some of the most extravagant
claims on his behalf come from Mark Mothersbaugh, the lead singer of
Devo, who compares Mr. Fischer to van Gogh. The dreaded word genius
is trotted out. Be assured, there's no sign of that.///
One thing you've got to remember is that he actually is a wild
person; Larry is dangerous, Zappa declares in an old interview. Their
relationship ended when Mr. Fischer, in a rage, hurled a bottle that
barely missed striking Zappa's daughter, Moon Unit.]

Sorry.
I haven't heard the song in years but I thought I recalled that when
playing along with it on bass, it was in F (but I am unschooled
musically).
Thanks to all.

[Zappa-List] Trying to ID a song

2005-07-09 Thread Guy
It's an instrumental, just two acoustic guitars (FZ and ((I
think)) Bird Legs Youman).
It starts with Frank announcing the songs key (F) in a rather
exasperated/impatient manner,e!.
It's a slow number with Frank playing some incredibly beautiful
phrasing and picking until the accompaniest's fingers get entangled
in
the strings and Franks asks Getting tired? and the other dude
says Uh-uh. My fingers got stuck..
Anybody know the song title and what recording it's on?

King Kong on Uncle Meat is in six parts. Can you tell which part

Yep, Uncle Meat it is. I was just reading something about it

It says It consists of a brief set of composed sequences which
are
then followed by extensive improvising. This beautiful set of
descending sequences is in 3/4 time and in Dorian mode. Now I
want
 to hear it again!!

But what IS that sound? It's so funky...

[Zappa-List] Re: Anybody experiencing distortion on QuA's Rollo?

2004-12-10 Thread Guy

No. It doesn't occur between phrases. From the abrupt start, the big
band sounds fine (as does every other cut on the disc). The
crackling starts as soon as Frank does and continues (in varying
degrees) throughout the track as he plays.
DANG!

[Zappa-List] First impressions on QuAUDIOPHILIAc

2004-11-06 Thread Guy

Listening to it merely in stereo, but on headphones.
I was initially disappointed when a previously released track came
on, but I loved the new mixes. I had forgotten how fantastic Wild
Love is. Chunga Basement is s cool. What an intimate sounding
recording and it also reinforces my opinion of Aynsley Dunbar as my
personal favorite FZ drummer. And Waka/Jawaka has a great mix too...
the horns removed from their doubling of Frank's solo, and his great
rhythm guitar track being more audible. And of course, the words
of Drooling Midrange Accountants.., as pertinent today as they
were then.
Keep 'em commin' Dweez, but with longer runnig times please.
