Hi All
Im new to the list... quick intro
Been very keen on jungle for the last 6 years or so (bukem/fabio and the
like) until a few months ago at a party where I discovered Stacey Pullen
playing in the small room. Went back to the jungle room and couldnt deal
with the rubbish coming out of
Just curious abuot something - is it true that lots of detroit djs take the
labels off records so nobody knows what tunes they are? i heard that on
occasion some people stand around the dj with notepads and write down
everything thats played (hence the peeling off of labels).
True/False?

It was done and is still done (on a smaller scale)... I know a few
people who like to black the labels out.
I think it stems from old hip hop days with dj's trying to out
perform competing dj's with tricks and rare records. They used to put
paper ontop of the label or use texta or white-out

yeah, you be using my texta all da time...
seriously though, the reason i black texta is to
differentiate the sides, so that i instantly know
which side i wanna play.
it is too time and brain consuming, to read labels
in the dark.
trainspotters be damned.
Knowing where he gets most of his material from I would say that they were all
whites, which really sucks sometimes cause you know
who the artist may be or the label but sometimes there is no tracklisting or
vice-versa.

The book 'Last Night a DJ Saved My Life' has a very interesting addition to
this notion of covering over labels. It seems that this began in the
Northern Soul era, when the records being sought were all collectors items
and having one record that the crowd liked but nobody else had would actually
I heard there was going to be something else put together by some of the
people who were actually there during those times (names unknown at this
point). In a way it makes sense, who better to tell the story then someone
who was there? Dan's book was great but it overlooked some of the key

Hello,
Sorry for the late notice, but I just found out that I will be playing
records at Forans tonight from 8-11pm. I am going to be playing a set of
moody IDM, Detroit Classics, and a bit of minimal dub for good measure.
It will be a low-key, unpretentious night of relaxing high quality
Anyone else going to this? Poor me has noone to go with tonight but it
couldn't hurt for me to meet some new folks while I'm ther. :)
Reply to me in private and we can figure out something.

More from the Monolake site: They seem to have
archived all sorts of live performances, provided all
of their [ m l / i ] releases in Real Audio if not
mp3, and they are releasing a new album Gravity in
January, which is also all available in RA; AND, they
will be playing in Montreal and Toronoto
Off topic, I know, but is there anyone in
