Thanks Lena! We had been using one dark mode extension and it was causing
problems with the reporter, but we couldn’t remember the name. I think it was
that one.

Stephanie- thanks! I will add heat now.

I'm going to chime in and recommend against using "Dark Mode (WebExtension)"
for Firefox. I recently had issues with it on certain Evergreen screens.

We went with Unique’s MessageBee. We manage is on the consortium level so
there’s no customization for individual libraries, but it’s been working great.

we were getting asked to add new carriers that don’t have gateways and so we

Good afternoon,

We have recently been receiving a number of reports from different libraries
that patrons are not receiving SMS notifications, particularly those for holds.
Evergreen is sending the messages like it is supposed to, so we are thinking
that some carriers may be flagging the messages as spam. Based on the reports
we have received, it appears to be most common with AT

For anyone else who might have experienced this in the past, did you have any

needed to be taken to prevent this from happening in the future?

Thank you.

Re: [Evergreen-general] [External] Paperback vs. Hardcover Records

2024-03-20 Thread Elizabeth Davis via Evergreen-general
Hello

PaILS uses the same record for hardcover and trade paper editions. We
encourage a separate record for mass market paperback. I’d have to test it but
would the multi-format hold work for instances where you have records for the
hardcover and one for the paperback?

Good afternoon Joan,

Like you, our bibliographic records can contain both paperback and hardcover
versions of a book. We actually encourage this, as well, as part of our
cataloging best practices to try and cut down on duplicate records and to make
sure that as many items as possible are available for patrons on a single
record. There will be instances, however, where we suggest using a separate
record, but that is usually based on the content of the book, not whether it is
paperback or hardcover.

The majority of our member libraries are fine with this, but we do occasionally
receive requests to separate paperbacks and hardcovers, because some libraries
have patrons who only want one or the other. One recommendation we have made
is for libraries to use call numbers and/or shelving locations to identify if a
specific item is paperback. For example, one member library puts "Apb" for
"Adult Paperback" at the beginning of the call numbers for mass market
paperback books.

This may not help patrons as much when placing holds, because they cannot place
item level holds, but it allows staff to easily identify a paperback version so
they can place an item hold for the patron. Staff would just have to encourage
patrons to come to them to place the hold, so the staff can place the item
level hold for the patron.

It is admittedly not a perfect solution, but because we have combined
paperbacks and hardcovers on single records for so long, trying to split them
up now would simply be unfeasible. And even if we began instructing catalogers
to use separate records moving forward, that would still leave countless
existing records in the catalog with both paperbacks and hardcovers on them.

Hi,

In C/W MARS a bibliographic record may contain items for paperback and for
hardcover. We have had some recommendations to separate paperback items from
hardcover items.

This is a change on the cataloging side but also with how holds would be filled.

Do any of you use separate bibliographic records for paperback vs. hardcover or
do you have another workflow to make it easy for staff and patrons to place
holds to be filled by one format vs. the other?

Thank you.

Subject: [Evergreen-general] Inconsistent White Screens with Hatch

Hello!

Historically we've found that bad installations of Hatch can lead to
blank/white screens in Evergreen, and reinstalling Hatch usually resolves this.

However, over the last week or so, we've started to receive reports of
blank/white screens that we cannot seem to resolve. The problem is slightly
different from historical reports in that the white screens do not appear every
time, and they are more likely to appear when accessing a web client page from
a bookmark than within the client. Refreshing a blank page can sometimes force
it to load correctly. It's the inconsistency that's making this hard to nail
down.

Has anyone else run into this issue and have you had any luck in resolving it?
We've gotten a total of 5 reports over the last week or so.

Some information about our setup:

  * Running Evergreen 3.73 plus some newer features
  * Affecting (at least) Chrome 119.0.6045.105 and 119.0.6045.106
  * Affecting (at least) Hatch version 0.3.2 and 0.3.3.
And what we've tried:

  *   Clearing cache
  *   Updating/recreating bookmarks
  *   Updating Chrome
  *   Updating Hatch
  *   Reinstalling Hatch
  * Clearing site settings and cookies
  *   Removing eg.hatch.login_keys from in-browser preferences
The only way we've found to stop it completely is to disable Hatch, which some
of our libraries rely on heavily.

When a page fails to load, the console seems to hang up on this message:

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

Thank you!

Re: [Evergreen-general] Staff training

2023-09-19 Thread Elizabeth Davis via Evergreen-general
In addition to the age hold protection, we have a few libraries that use the
high demand circulation modifiers to keep new things local. Using the modifier
allows them a little more control when a movie, show, or reboot comes out based
on a title and interest spikes again.

Otherwise, a lot of our smaller libraries report how happy their patrons are
when they are able to easily request items from other libraries without having
to go through the formal ILL process.

We have found exactly the same thing that Terran describes. Oftentimes, we’ve
had larger, more well-funded libraries indicate that they’re afraid the smaller
libraries will “clear their shelves” of new materials. In reality, we’ve found
that the smaller libraries contribute a ton because they have retained items
that are often weeded at the larger libraries, filling out series and providing
access to items that are out of publication. Age protection is the thing that
seems to alleviate the fear. We have found that three month age protection
generally works best except for those few outliers (think Harry Potter,
Twilight, Spare…).

click links from unknown senders or unexpected email.

My suggestion is to put the emphasis on how much it will improve the patron
experience by being able to offer them so many more titles than they currently
have access to.

We have done resource sharing in Georgia since the beginning of PINES and one
of the things that we have found is that oftentimes the less well-funded
libraries that can't afford all of the new books end up being really valuable
for holds because they may have some of the older titles that other branches
have weeded.

Also, if you are using age protection, then staff can be sure that their local
patrons are still getting the brand new items first.

Hi Elizabeth,

It makes sense that a patron may not be able to retrieve their hold when it
becomes available for them, and may want to pass on the current item but
suspend their hold, possibly with an activation date, and keep their position
in the queue.

Suspending a hold is currently disallowed once the item has been captured.

Maybe it would be useful instead, to allow captured holds to be suspended, and
have that action also perform a retarget to free up the captured item for the
next hold.

Essentially, the steps that the staff user would need to do manually to move
the hold along to the next person and suspend it for the current patron would
be wrapped into the process of suspending the captured hold.

That sounds worth a wishlist bug to me.

Michele

2023-08-29 Thread Elizabeth Davis via Evergreen-general
Hi Eva

Thanks, I didn’t consider extending the shelf pick up time. I think the staff
were really interested in moving the item along to the next person but keeping
the current patron in the same spot in the queue.

Hi Elizabeth,

If I understand your question correctly, you are asking how to extend the date
by which the item on the hold shelf is to be picked up?

If so, then

  * go to Hold Shelf under the Circulation menu,
  * in the Actions for selected items, choose Edit Hold Dates,
  * and edit the Shelf Expire Date.
I am not sure whether there might be a library setting preventing changes to
shelf expiration dates if the item is in the status Ready for Pickup; however,
I am not aware of such a setting.

Hope this helps

Eva

Hi

Similar to the “Deliver Later” in Overdrive’s Libby, staff were wondering how
they can easily suspend a hold when it’s in the ready for pick up status. They
had a few patrons over the summer who were unable to pick up items like museum
passes because they were leaving for vacation in the next day or two.

My two suggestions were either use find another target and then suspend it via
edit hold dates or the more complicated cancel the hold, replace it, send the
patron to the top of queue and suspend it. Does anyone else have a different
workflow? Is there any interest in a wishlist bug for a pickup later option?

I have attached output from our config.sms_carrier table, for all active

We started noticing difficulties with sending notices to certain carriers last
year. Somehow, we got the idea to try converting the SMS gateway to the MMS
gateway. That seemed to work for the carrier that was giving us issues, so we
made the change for all of our gateways. I haven't heard of any issues since we
made that change. I can't claim that this will be a perfect or permanent
solution, but it may be worth a try. If anyone would like to see how we have
our carriers set up currently, I'd be happy to share.

[Evergreen-general] Spare by Prince Harry The Duke of Sussex and the holds process

2023-02-02 Thread Elizabeth Davis via Evergreen-general
Hello Everyone,

Due to the overwhelming interested in Prince Harry The Duke of Sussex's
biography Spare here in PaILS/SPARK, two bugs have been identified as
negatively impacting the holds targeting/capture process. What our libraries
are seeing is holds are either not triggering or they are picking the most
recently placed hold. In some rare cases, items are being renewed even though
there are holds that should prevent it.

Equinox has filed two bugs that need community input and we're hoping to raise
awareness by sharing them with you today. The bugs are
https://bugs.launchpad.net/evergreen/+bug/2004520 and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/evergreen/+bug/2004521.

We'd appreciate to hear if other consortia are experiencing issues via this
list of on launchpad.

Re: [Evergreen-general] How do you handle placing temporary ILL items on hold?

2023-01-03 Thread Elizabeth Davis via Evergreen-general
Hi Benjamin

We have a mix of workflows.

  1. Some libraries use the Pre-cats and there are some distinct workflow
options:

 * Notify the patron and then check it out via the pre-cats when the
patron arrives to pick it up.
 * Check it out via the pre-cat option and then notify the patron
 * Have established pre-cat items that are recycled among the ILLs. For
example, there is a pre-cat item that's just Title: ILL #4 and they check it in
and out with each different ILL item. Tracking of which item gets which ILL
precat is done via paper.

  1. Some libraries add brief/short records and there are some distinct
workflow options
 * Use an ILL template that are not OPAC visible but holdable. Staff add
the items and place the patron holds. Evergreen takes over with the
notifications. Each ILL has it's own record and it's on the staff to remove the
records when the items are returned.
 * Some have generic ILL brief/short records that they recycle among each
ILL. Similar to the established pre-cat ill outlined above.

The libraries that use the brief/short record use it for the built in Evergreen
notification features and the libraries that use the pre-cats tend to call
patrons for normal holds notifications.

We have a few libraries that use the public facing Notes feature to keep in
touch with patrons regarding their ILL requests. It also helps ILL staff keep
the circulation staff updated on the status of requests. We have a video of
one of the libraries that uses this workflow here:
https://youtu.be/W5KEFq7HO9M?t=956.

Subject: [Evergreen-general] How do you handle placing temporary ILL items on
hold?

We're looking for suggestions on how to efficiently place ILL items on hold for
patrons that have requested them. (Items that aren't in Evergreen and won't
need to be there long term.)

Current behavior we're getting is that the ILL item comes in, the staff add it
as a pre-cat item, goes to the Item Status screen, scans it and places an item
hold for the item for the patron. When the item is then checked in to capture
the hold it says "send to cataloging" because its been added as a pre-cat item.
That adds a level of complexity that we're hoping to avoid.

Our goal is to have a scenario where the ILL item can be efficiently placed on
hold for the patron and then the ILL item can be removed once it has been
circulated. Do any of you have a process you use? Do you have a bib record
specifically for ILL items that you add items to? Do you have some other method
that allows for the patron to be notified of the available hold and when it is
due?

Hello Elizabeth,

I have no tips or best practices with the Link Checker to offer but I'd be very
interested if you'd be willing to share what you learn.

We looked at the link checker in 2019 (I think on EG 3.3) and found it wasn't
scoping the results for us. So if we did a search at LIBRARY A we'd get
Overdrive URLS listed for all 50+ libraries that have 856s on our Overdrive
records which made it pretty unusable for us. (I tried to run a test just now
in 3.9 to confirm what we saw but I'm getting errors so not sure if I'm doing
something wrong or if there's a new
bug.)

I thought we'd reported the results scoping issue as a bug but I'm not seeing
it so I think we moved onto the next thing in our upgrade testing intending to
come back to the link checker and never did.

I did find a bug for the angularization of the link checker that King County
and Equinox are doing:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/evergreen/+bug/1993824

Hello

Does anyone have any tips/best practices on using the Link Checker? I've
gotten searches to work, but when looking at say a vendor like Overdrive, I may
end up with 1,000's of links to check.

Thanks!

Is that ADMIN_PRINT_TEMPLATE? I've edited print templates with CircClerk

Do any of you know of a permission related to print management from the

Hi Elizabeth,

I don't think it's possible to get the source name only. The closest you can
get is to add the data column under Template and then look up what the
"core_class" value represents in fm_IDL.xml. We can talk about that at the
meeting if you like.

Is the sending email address the same for all of your outgoing messages?

We use a different sending email for each org unit, but that requires that
their SPF records on their domains are set up correctly. If not, receiving
service providers will often block the emails. I'm not sure if that could be a
problem you are hitting.

I’m finding it’s a mix depending on the notice so I’m trying to decide which is
the best practice. It makes sense to have library specific addresses to make
it easier on patrons, but like you said you have to have the SPF records set up
correctly. It’s just odd that 99% AT users get our notifications.

Is the sending email address the same for all of your outgoing messages?

We use a different sending email for each org unit, but that requires that
their SPF records on their domains are set up correctly. If not, receiving
service providers will often block the emails. I'm not sure if that could be a
problem you are hitting.

I ran into this recently using Chrome. Your computer 2 is likely blocking
pop-ups, which prevents it from automatically opening the holdings editor.
It'll show that it's blocking in your address bar but only for a split second.

Adding your Evergreen URL to the list of allowed pop-ups in Chrome should fix
this.

[Evergreen-general] Add Items Box

2022-02-22 Thread Elizabeth Davis via Evergreen-general
Hello

I have a weird difference in workflows between two computers when creating a
new MARC record. Both computers are using the same browser, same defaults, and
same login.

Computer 1:

  1. Selects MARC template
  2. Updates MARC Fields
  3. Checks Add Items box
  4. Enters barocde and call number information
  5. Clicks Save
  6. Gets taken to the Holidings Editor Screen

Computer 2:

  1. Selects MARC template
  2. Updates MARC Fields
  3. Checks Add Items box
  4. Enters barocde and call number information
  5. Clicks Save
  6. Gets taken to the Catalog screen
  7. Then has to click Add Holdings to get taken to Holdings Editor Screen

The only difference I can figure is that Computer 1 is used prior to our
upgrade to 3.7 and Computer 2 was installed after the upgrade. Both use Hatch
so I’m wondering if it’s something tied to Stored Prefences. Has anyone seen
anything like this or know of a bug that I missed?

Thank you, a few of our libraries use the action trigger to alert patrons that
their cards is coming up for renewal and were hoping to do the same, but just

We’ve implemented this. We let people know beforehand, and have used it as a
way, #1 to remind libraries to be actively managing their staff accounts and #2
hold individuals with continuing ed requirements (generally catalogers)
accountable for staying current on those requirements.

Over the last couple months we have been experiencing a new issue with Hatch
and Chrome. Randomly on a handful of our computers we will start getting
"white screens" when navigating to the various pages in the staff client.
Often clicking on a menu item a second time loads the page. Some pages like
Check Out need a page refresh before they work. The problem seems to be worse
when you are doing everything in a single tab. You are lucky to get one page
to load before the issue comes back.

In the past this was often fixed by clearing the cache. This has no impact on
this issue. No amount of cache clearing seems to work.

Sometimes just sitting in Developer tools -> Application allows the pages to
load maybe 80% of the time. Also, setting a break point on line 89 of
extension.js and manually continuing the code allows all pages to load.
Putting a 2 second delay right in the code has no effect.

We have tried many things but so far the quickest solution is to delete the
following folder:

C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Google

We have also done full Chrome reinstalls making sure we remove all profile
information.

Reinstalling Hatch has no effect. Disabling Ninite, Firewall and AntiVirus had
no effect. Most of these machines are stand alone workstations. So far only 1
has been on Active Directory.

Watching the Hatch extension in the console it looks like things happen out of
sequence when the page loads fail. The message port is removed before the
message is received.

Works
extension.js:113 Removing port 28 on tab disconnect
extension.js:89 new port connected with id 28
extension.js:92 Received message from browser on port 28

Doesn't Work
extension.js:89 new port connected with id 28
extension.js:113 Removing port 28 on tab disconnect
extension.js:92 Received message from browser on port 28

Watching the Hatch logs it appears that Hatch does indeed respond.

We use PayPal, but had the account setup from prior to our migration to
Evergreen. You can use it on the staff side with the desk payment, but the
interface is lacking and we decided not to use it because it just asks for a
credit card number and expiration month and year. It concerned us for the
large margin of human that could occur. I know some people have gotten it to
