The February QST actually has a sort of promo article about AM. Not very
informative, and has the admonition about not operating in crowded band
conditions or contests. Well, I might consider that if those folks who hate AM
would not use us to tune up or check out their Ehlllooo, ello
has the admonition about not operating in crowded band
conditions or contests.
That point irritated me as well. So AMers should get off the air
whenever lots of SSB stations appear? That's absurd. And it actually
encourages the mindset that AM stations always have the lower priority,

Hi Charlie,
I agree, it was a good article overall, and the fact that it was written
by Joel Hallas W1ZR is significant. He's their Technical Editor and

Here is what irritated me for the most part:
In addition the carrier of an AM signal can make an annoying steady

SSB nearby before making a call using AM.
Why don't AM operators work during PHONE contests.
I thought AM is still a PHONE mode!

I can't think of any common SSB rig that has an auto-notch function.
Also, SSB activity with vintage SSB rigs is probably far more popular

WOW, more than 50 stations checked in last evening on the Tuesday Southeastern
AM Radio Club's gathering on 80m.
Andy, WA4KCY was the anchor station, and the band started out short with most
of the check-ins from the southern states toward the Gulf Coast. But by 7pm the

Hi guys, Maybe a little off topic but I need a
couple 78 records preferably big band type. I just
got a nice am/sw radio and record player with a 15
inch speaker that is 4 feet tall and about 20
inches wide. Had the turntable fixed and cartridge
fixed so all is working and no records.
Thanks,
Pete, by now most everyone has a DSP box that auto-notches any heterodynes.

The Icom 756 pro series has an auto notch, works on AM and ssb, and will
even follow a vfo swisher all over the place and notch it out with very
little impact in the audio.
Most rigs have an auto and manual notch.
The flex 5000 has an auto notch, but on AM it tries to notch the carrier
