would go the SB3 + DAC route and don't forget it will
still handle up to 24/48 which gives at least some of the improvement
of high quality digital audio.

there is something in the DAC that senses the connector is inserted, or
maybe the laser is not turned off in the SB3. I'd be interested in some
clarification on this. Thanks

that the 24/48 sounded better than the 16/44.1, however with the SB+
using its internal DACs I really cannot hear the difference. Of course
with 24/48 the 192K upsampler is really operating in 192 kHz 4x
oversampling mode. Not sure if this makes a difference or not.

, is at
least pleasing to the ears. This is probably the reason that separate
DACs and transports have gone out of fashion in recent years, hence my
original assertion that the SB+ or Boulder would sound better.

Can't see him getting many offers as the starting price has a 1 in
ffont of it so psychologically he hasn't broken the barrier. If I
could afford to pay over a grand then for the extra £249 I'd go for a
new one with a full guarantee from a UK retailer.

own modified SP/Dif output to presumably clean
up the clocking and reduce jitter I suspect that this is the key
difference so logically would expect the Boulder or SB+ to be more like
the CD transport.

but from what I have read I would expect this to compare well with mid
to high range CD players whether using FLAC encoding or uncompressed
WAV files (which incidentally I can't tell the differnce between on the
SB3).

Would I just be better off using the NAS as as NAS only and running
Slimserver on my PC?
Would be interested in any views.

as I understand that the PSU was upgraded to overcome some of these
issues.
I would be grateful of any advice/past experiences of these or other
products

See my post on DACs, but basically something that is warm and detailed
in the mid/upper mid range with good bass control, timiing and stereo
sound stage. But then I guess that's what everyone wants...(sigh)
