I'm using Apple Lossless files like FLAC files are full resolution
bit-perfect files that are compressed like zip archives. However they
are closed source instead of open source like FLAC.

, the concept of the direct connection being an
improvement over an 802.11g Ethernet connection doesn't seem like too
big a stretch but I admit it's not apples to apples because the SS
software only works with the SB3 and the iTunes software only works
with the direct connection.

first impression turned out to be my final impression. I really didn't
expect it to, or even want it to all that much. I really liked the
SB3.
But, when it came right down to it, there was enough of a difference.
Not night and day. But definate.

to fit the SB3. I have a box of old wall-warts and found a
plug that fit and replaced the factory plug from the hosfelt.com power
supply.
Did I notice a difference? Not at all. Zero difference.
I did get an external Dac and this has made a massive improvement.

nice tight bass, great sound stage, clear highs without
being overbearing and great air.
I listed for 3 weeks with the stock SB3 Dac. So, I can definitely hear
an improvement. This isn't one of those -humm, not sure I hear it-
moments.

I haven't checked it out yet, but I was told that the Max application
(http://sbooth.org/Max/) can do all this on the fly for Macs -- make
two versions at the same time.
I could have understood it wrong but it seems to claim to do something
like this.

and detailed.
The Gradients always come up as they have a model made for Quads. But
the REL Britannia is probably a good choice too. Basically, you want a
MUSIC SUB not a HT SUB.
And you might want to consider adding an outboard crossover too.

Small drivers are faster accelerating and return faster too. Less mass
to move in either direction. Plus remember the Quads are MUCH faster
reacting than cone speakers.

Oh, in the end, I choose the Squeezebox for three reasons:
1. It is a good starting place -- a self-contained solution
2. It seems to be well supported and generally capable
3. This forum community seems dedicated to improvements

I appreciate your responses and will carfully consider all advice
given.
