Yes, but IMHO, they are the future.
I don't think you save money, but the amp engineer can deliver what the
driver engineer wants, how, when, what flavor, etc.

Purely personal opinion - I'd keep the 640A and get some

Good point (although they still have led's) question is - are they
going to solve my current problem and offer a significant improvement
over my current setup (Cambridge Azur 640A and Wahrfedale Diamond 9.1)?

The Quads look pleasant enough and seem to have gotten some decent
reviews. This thread has gotten me thinking active again.

You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it
ain't what you'd call minimal...
Touch(wired/XP) - TACT 2.2X (Linear PSU) + Good Vibrations S/W - MF
Triplethreat(Audiocom full mods) - Linn 5103 - Aktiv 5.1 system (6x

The best option I agree, but still with no remote and the volume
control on the back. Also they still have lights on the front (I
believe)?

It's reassuring to know that I am not the only one to find that in my
price range there just does not seem to be any active speakers that
meet the needs for home use. Not sure that is helps or is necessarily
right, but at least I am not alone..
As for the ADM's, well I have already looked at thos

One thing to consider is that many of the more affordable active options
on the market are just not pleasant to look at. I'll assume given the
price range of the equipment in your system (very similar to my own)
that the higher end active gear (ex. ATC) is not a consideration here.
I have consid
Once again thanks for the insightful replies everyone.
I guess Phil's summary is accurate - things do sound lifeless after
making the room bigger. And in response to all, yes I do have the space
for floorstanders, and I guess the general consensus is that
floorstanders would be a more effective o
If I'm understanding this correctly, you've modified your room to make
it bigger and now things sound a bit "lifeless"?
I'm afraid the only cure for this is:
1) more efficient speakers, with more bass capability to drive the
enlarged room properly
2) a bigger, beefier amp (but only after 1 above)
Room correction/EQ is not going to fix what is probably missing, the
foundation of all Music: Bass.
Monitors can only go so low but more importantly start rolling off well
above how far the spec says they go down to. Have you considered or have
room for floor standing speakers?

Hi thanks for the quick replies and the sensible answers. I will look
into the room correction and see how I get on, however I do also fear
that it may be a red herring in my original post.
Basically we knocked a wall down and rearranged rooms in the house, so
my setup is now in a combined kitche
Using one of the room correction options out there can bring significant
improvements for very little cost - particularly for LF issues. Give
Inguz or Brutefir a try. The KRK Ergo is an affordable option as well.

Before you do anything, you might experiment with room acoustics and
speaker placement. You'd want to look at the relationship of your
listening spot to the speakers. If there are any strong primary
reflection points, those can affect imaging. You can experiment by
