Why is that, and how would the squeezebox via digital output compare to
CD players?

There are so many possible things to discuss - but here are a few:
1) the SB may be able to make a better job of presenting the bits to a
DAC than a CDP because it has a much simpler task - no moving parts and
no read errors
2) The bitstream presented by the SB to a DAC will always be the same
So with my Panasonic SA-XR50 digital receiver, does the quality of the
CD player matter since it's purely digital from the CD player to the
receiver?

somehow I think I am defeating/ degrading the purpose of the slim server
and the Dac by then running them through the onyko analog imports to
power the 901s-- sort of degrading the sound
are my hunches correct?

Mea Culpa. Panasonic's web page about the XR55 didn't make this obvious.
Now that you've explained what sort of device the XR55 is, I agree that
using an external DAC with it makes no sense.
Of course, a PWM power amp is essentially a DAC that delivers a high
current output

It's obviously not just about the technology. I have no issues about the

with the setup you have, it will be worse than if you plug in the
digital output of SB3 to the Panny. By giving the Panny analog signals,
you're using the ADC of the Panny, which is pretty bad. If you need to
use the Constantine, get a Class A/B amp. Try hooking the SB3 digital

There's no need for a DAC with the Panny. That's what's unique about
the Panny line of digital amps, i.e. that they keep the input signal
in the digital domain until the final gain stages, and as a result are
known for sounding excellent with digital input. Using a fancy DAC

You can't get DACs out of the equation. Somewhere in the replay chain,
you need one. The XR55 has a DAC inside. If its analogue inputs go
through an ADC then onto the DAC, then you're right: there's no point
using any other DAC. But if its analogue inputs can be

if the Panny is too cheap for you, try hooking the Squeezebox to the
TACT Digital Amp. The concept is the same, just that TACT uses better
quality components and addresses a niche market.

I think you might be a little confused about the nature of these
Panasonic receivers, assuming that they're just like everybody else's.
These units (unless *I*'ve gotten really befuddled along the way) use
an Equibit-chip-based power DAC -- which is to say that this PWM
that convert bits to high power analog waveform energy to drive your
speakers, it should work. I looked at the Panny XR55 that you
mentioned, it doesn't look it though...
