Comments on free hand wiring..
Yes.! Free handwiring is basic Not a Good idea in a mixed signal
enviorioment like the SB3. I also belive that further improvement can
be done by placing these "flying" component on the PCB. But please note
the GND wire.. This is not more an "antenna" than the origi
All of these so called "mods" involve hanging a bunch of wires inside
the enclosure, even the fancy Bolder!
The RFI generated by said wires defeats the whole purpose of the mod,
which is (or was) to improve the sound!

Are you equating the comments by Sean regarding handwiring in a couple
of upscale caps and changing the clock with the $1,500 mods done by
bolder? After buying the sb, that's around $1,800 already compared
with the $2k transporter.

Just somebody who actually compared 2 squeesboxes one modded and one
stock head to head.
I beleive the bolder squeesbox was rewarded the anaual year award by
the same magasin.

Optimizing signal paths is a fine idea in principle, but it's usually
not good to string components up in the air like that... there is quite
a risk of them becoming antennas, and as far as decoupling caps are
concerned, they become quite ineffective as you move them further from
the pins they're

Big improvment was to seperate the opamp output and especially the gnd

How about cleaning up all the flux after you have soldered, it looks
pretty nasty to see that mess and it's not good practice. Also, given
that you are trying to achieve better sound quality, some of those

You mean all it needed was some Black Gate caps? Wow, wish I had thought

Hey..
Thanks for your replies..
Here is how to mod the SB3.
Replace the PCM1748 DAC with the PCM1748K-grade. This is the only
semiconductor that was replaced.
I decided NOT to replace the pwr supply with a linear one. (just for
fun. It will properly be even better with the Linear version. I hav

You should try them blind. Initially, you might think there's a
difference but, later on, everything becomes equally black.

Especially side-on! :o)
(although for the record, I doubt that a modded SB using the internal
DAC can get level with a TP).

I have just runned a listningtest with a modded (by me) SB3 vs an

No doubt that the Modded SB3 makes a fullstrike against the unmodded
transporter..
In Dynamic, perspective, etc
