I think the Moorish influence in Portugal has been greatly exaggerated over the
years especially with regard to Catholicism and conversions. They had great
influence in Spain and weren't expelled from that country until 1492 but in
Portugal their influence was mainly in the area of commerce and

The war continued well after 1193. The Algarve province with strong
Moorish influences wasn't in Portuguese control until 1250,
starting in 1217 with the taking of town of Alcácer do Sal, the capture
most of the Algarve in 1236 and the taking of Faro in 1249,

The percentages may be too high. I know of another study in progress and
it's not supporting the 20% rate. Far less. We'll have to wait and see
what their final numbers are when they publish it.

Yes Eric that is essentially correct. I am familiar with the the battle of
Ourique and the history of Portugal but I think I have made the point I wanted
to make. We learn new things on DNA everyday. DNA testing is still in infancy
and we will continue to learn more in the coming years.
Thank you, Rick. Which of the tests do you recommend? Which one did most
people in this group do? I see the range in price is quite significant.

Hi Doug,
Caetano de Sousa is pai incognito and according to NEPS born in Horta
(Conceicao) to Agueda da Boa Nova. I found his marriage to Jacinta Rosa in
Matriz Horta 1727-1802 page 0182. It appears his mother is from Bandeiras but
it's unclear and I don't see Pico mentioned in the record.
Repost for Maria Lima:
I just found Santa Maria island is online. I just don't know if that's all
the parishes for now. Got lots,of looking to do and the priest had
beautiful penmanship. (At least the Casa mentors in 1790-ish.

I'd guess Assunção. I'd also guess that the priest had too much vinho at

Why I ask people to post the link.
Reasons for posting the link:
1) Makes it easier on the translators. They just click the link and read
the parts you are having problems with. Requester is not taking up any
more of their time by asking them to navigate the CCA site and drill down
to that
I think its great that all of these villages are being posted. I hope
everyone finds all of the records they need and prat every day for a small
miracle to happen and the Ribeira Grande records will some day posted. But
