Yahoo! Found my grandfather's passport information. It verifies what my
father always said that he was from Sao Mateus, Graciosa! He left from
Angra and came through New York at the age of 11! Settled in Lawrence,
Mass. Doesn't look like he traveled with his parents though - so more

The way it's easier for me to understand why you get different results is that

It was my mother's DNA. Francisco Sousa Rosa is my father's father.
I found the ship manifest and he is listed as Franco de Sensa Rosa age 11.
When looking at writing, I'm almost sure Sensa is Sousa. He was born Oct.
1887, so age fits. Shows leaving from Terceira. So I will search

Graciosa.
Did you DNA test and are you matching S.Miguel people or Graciosa people?

Siblings would get different results.
We get 50% of our DNA from dad and 50% from mom. A sibling would also get
50% of dad and 50% of mom. Who says it's the same 50%? Because the DNA is
mixed (like a card shuffle), a sibling doesn't get the same 50% that we
got. A good chunk of it is the same,

The Dona Maria sailed into New York on Oct. 1, 1899. That must be your ship
and the date.
However, that ship picked up people from all 3 Azorean ports before making
it to New York. However, you may be able to find him on Ancestry as only
you know your ancestor's birth date. The ships list will
Colleen,
I would suggest you go to the Ellis Island website. Try looking up his name in
any number of variations with the ship name and date of arrival you can always
find the manifest by backing into it and then check the names one by one. The
manifest should also say where what island it
Are you sure its not Fayal or Faial. There several Fenais in the Azores.

You know how ideas are really good in theory but sometimes when we put them
to practice, well, we run into obstacles?
Joao Afonso Grotas Fundas...born mid to late 1400s, d. 1512. Work tracing
ALL his sons forward for the past 550 years to wherever his descendants
went: America, Canada, Brasil,
I logged into someone who did Y only and was able to put Family Finder in
the cart. Maybe you should call FTDNA? Cheri

Cheri,
They have both done the Y male test so, yes, they have tested before. They
have not had Family Finder done yet. I will try again.

If you are trying to order a BRAND NEW KIT, you can't do it by logging into
YOUR page.
Regarding your husband: Has he DNA tested before? If not, then just go to
www.ftdna.com and place the order. If he has tested with FTDNA, what
test(s) have you had done on him?

OK. I am still trying to order 2 $69 Family Finders. I sign in and I only
get as far as clicking on the $69 then it goes to a red rolling something
or other and keep going and nothing happens or I am still getting a blank
page. This is in response to their email to me for this. Anyone else
Just like Lawrence can be a first or last name in the English language,
Lourenço can be a first or last name in Portuguese.

Thank you for all the information everyone is finding on this family.
Are any of the siblings born in Sao Jose?
Is there a rule with the surname Lourenço? Sometimes it is a surname
sometimes it is a first name? There is a Lawrence family in Plymouth my
mother was told were cousins of ours
Those of us that are descendants of João Afonso can all pitch in for a
Y-DNA test.
I remember someone posting information a year or so ago that a university
was going to publish a paper about João Afonso (de Pimentel) das Grotas
Fundas but nothing was brought forth.

Dear direct paternal line descendant of Joao Afonso das Grotas Fundas,
We need your Y DNA tested to confirm a mystery and be able to make a huge
breakthrough with one of the original settlers of the Azores.
Of course we would then need to find a direct paternal descendant of his
father, the
This is exactly what we need in order to have scientific proof. Otherwise,
we will never know for sure. We NEED to figure this out. It's an
intriguing story that needs to be told and properly researched.
Is there anyway that we could identify a direct male descendant of Joao
Afonso das GF? Then
