I completely understand your point about finding the right Jose. It's easy
to get excited when you find something close, but I kept feeling unsure
when I'd see a name change or birth date change. I'll see if I can find
some information about who told the biographical excerpt in the book

Yeah, it's the way the documentation works. Even with American records. I
have deaths that some states call "Death Certificates" and I have others
that the states call it a "Certificate of Death." Since it has 2 different
names, they are different things (although the function is the same)

That's not the birth certificate. It's a typed abstract with a translation.
It did not come from Terceira, it came from the archives on Horta. If your
relative walked into the archive on Terceira, someone contacted Horta for
her and part of her fees paid for the translation.

Nothing was attached. I checked Lajes das Flores for a Jose born 5 May
1842. There isn't one.
