Cheri, I completely understand your point about finding the right Jose. It's easy to get excited when you find something close, but I kept feeling unsure when I'd see a name change or birth date change. I'll see if I can find some information about who told the biographical excerpt in the book

Sorry for the late response Margaret, thank you so much for finding this and translating!! If this does turn out to be the correct Jose it's going to be incredibly helpful. On Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at 9:46:45 AM UTC-7, Mara wrote: > > Cheri, > > This is a certified and notarized copy of the

Cheri, Thank you for the clarification on the birth certificate being an abstract, sorry for the confusion. The Sonoma County book was published in 1926 by a historian Honoria Tuomey, but his excerpt was written in the present tense so I believe it was before he died. The book doesn't specify

Cheri, This is a certified and notarized copy of the birth record. It is as good as it gets. Kelley, I'm not certain how I can help but here's the link to the certified birth record. If I can assist with anything else please let me know. I'll send you the translation later. http://www.cultura

Kelley, That's not the birth certificate. It's a typed abstract with a translation. It did not come from Terceira, it came from the archives on Horta. If your relative walked into the archive on Terceira, someone contacted Horta for her and part of her fees paid for the translation. You need to f

Thanks, Kelley, I (and the whole list) can now see your name. Nothing was attached. I checked Lajes das Flores for a Jose born 5 May 1842. There isn't one. There's a big problem though. If your Jose was from Flores, his baptismal would have been on the island of Faial, in their archives. If your
