Looks like Liguisa, but that seems unlikely. Giving up on this one.

Cheri,
Do you think the given name (line 5) might be LIGURA (with the ornate
loop at the end of the "L" resembling an "e")? There's a Portuguese
women's given name of Liguori, so wonder if Ligura might be a
misspelling of it -- because it's not as though there's never been a
name misspelled on an
Rick,
That's the reason I think you and Steve are correct about the surname
farther down being "Rey" and starting with an "R" instead of a "P" --
that curly-que at the end of both the "L" and the "R" is consistent
(and yes, I know the old saying re the hobgoblins of small minds!). I

I took another look, using the magnification, and concur with you that
the 5th letter is indeed an "i," not half of a "u." The lower-case
"e" just before the "i" lacks a loop, but there's inconsistency in "e"
loops in this document.
FWIW, I know a guy in the Azores whose first name is L
I was thinking the spelling on the L name was Ligeira. The church told me
Ligura, but I thought I saw an "i" in there. I also thought the female
witness was also a Rey but the penmanship was sloppy or faded.
Yes, Gayle I know what you meant. I have way more Perez students than
Rey!!!
Thanks ev
Sorry if I inadvertently misled you, Richard. Margaret's point about
the dot above the "i" was something I overlooked -- kind of tricky to
spot what with the loop from that "y" in the line above swooping down
on it!

I think that Ligeira must be that family's alcunha. My dictionary says
light or nimble, Shirley A;s dictionary says dishonest!

Katharine,
I have never found Jose on a U.S. Census (I find his wife, "Mary Costa").
Or Jose coming to America. When his wife comes to America for the 2nd time
in 1912, she is a widow with her two daughters. Jose's birth had no side
margin notes as to when he died. Maybe I'll figure this myster
I like the nimble, light, or swiftly or quickness. The dishonest probably
depends on the context. I'm guessing that it's an alcunha for someone who
was light, nimble, quick on their feet more so than someone who was
dishonest. Although that may be a good adjective in certain grammatical
sentences
Hmm, seems to fit with the term "light fingered".. Sam in CA
