Antonia de Jesus was born in Livramento on 15 feb 1854 and there's no

You can probably order it from the Archives in Ponta Delgada. It is called
"TERMOSDOS CASADOS E BATIZADOS DABRETANHA que estavam num livro velho e foram
feitos pelo Vigário André de Sousa Dias no anode 1727." It is several pages
long and has not been typed up. The Vicar's penmanship is not the

I do not know
John, where can I find that index? Maybe it can be of help to me as well.
I’ll give anything a try once! ;)

I do not know if Andre is Antonio's father. Before 1703 the records for
Bretanha no longer exist. All that we have is an index, with many gaps, put
together by a vicar in 1723, of the deteriorating registers he found in
Bretanha when he arrived. Many records had already been lost, some were
John — is Andre the father of Antonio? And how and when did the de Medeiros
name get involved? Mathias and Antonio are my 4GG and 5GG respectively and
I’d like to trace things back further.
Thanks!

Andre Calvo died in Bretanha on 9 Mar 1768. He appears to have been married 3
times: Luzia de Sousa; they had children as early as 1710. Maria de Aguiar on
20 June 1742 and she died Valentines Day 1744. His last wife was Francisca
Soares whom he married in Brteanha on 21 May 1744.

Hi Joanne,
Not certain if you have your answers. Here's my take:
Mathias (Matias) son of Antonio Alvres (Alvares) Calvo and Victoria
(Vitoria) de Aquiar. Bron on the 21st day of the month of December of 1738
and baptised in this Parish of his parents where they are naturally from on
the 26th
perhaps "Sousa"? for Antonio's second name.
baptism date looks like it's at the end of the fourth line down: 26th of
same month and year
and, I don't see any grandparents listed either
:)

I’m looking at trying to understand Mathias’ father’s middle name (Antonio
Calvo is clear but that’s it) and I think his mother’s name is Victoria de
Aguiar. It looks like the date of birth is 21 December 1731 but I can’t see
the baptismal date or if there are grandparent names. It appears it
