The Varied Thrush described below was again present about 10:50 am when I
arrived, and showed up again about 30 minutes later, feeding on the same stump
as shown in the original photograph. It gets a bit wary/skitish when there is a
group of birders. Apparently the red-bellied woodpecker was see

Newcastle over the noon hour, but no sign of a snowy owl. However, there were
lots of large open fields for owls to fly across seeking rodents. A very scenic

I took the road less travelled today south from Stouffville on the 10th
line/Reesors Road, avoided being stopped by hidden radar operators, and stopped
at the pond adjacent to Hwy 407. While I did not have my binoculars with me, I
could clearly see two Great Egrets sitting separately on two lon

As Journey North draws to a close for another year, we make one last request

male great egrets put on displays and battled for

Journey North 2006
Over 17,000 classrooms representing more than
440,000 students are participating in the 2006 Journey North
Program. These students are from 55 U.S. States and
7 Canadian Provinces. The journeys of a dozen

clay-colored sparrows singing in the Calf Pasture area of the park. I went
over there, and listened for a time, but heard none. This is the area
where they have been located in the past.

My job brought me unexpectedly to Whitby this afternoon, so I headed down
to Halls Road. At 1:40 pm, a beautiful barred owl was totally in the open on
Halls Road directly beside the road and appeared undisturbed by myself and
a photographer. To the west, on Lakeridge Road, was a great gray owl.

The Port Hope area northern hawk owl previously reported on this list is
still being seen in the area, and was last sighted on Thursday off of Hwy.
#2 west of Welcome.
Great gray owls are being seen on the various sections of Lake Shore Road
from Grafton to west of Port Hope and possibly beyond.
As noted in Fred Helleiner's report and apparently also reported on CBC
news, Presqu'ile Provincial Park will be closed this weekend so that
Aboriginal hunters can conduct a cull of the park's estimated 350
white-tailed deer.
