It's nice (and lucky) to catch a hard-to-get migrant/yard bird making it's
way through the landscape away from the usual migrant "hot spots." A
Yellow-bellied Fly was first heard calling, and than seen well in our yard
this evening around 6:30pm 5/31/09 here in Merrickville to the SW of Ottawa.

Apologies for not being able to put the word out sooner.
An adult American White Pelican landed in Presu'ile Provincial Park
yesterday 7/18/09. The bird flew in at 4:10pm and landed on the spit at
Owens's Point where it promptly preened and slept. It was last seen still
sleeping on the spit at 8:4
The Little Gull was seen around 8am this morning on the water from the
Loyalist Parkway (Hwy 33) west of the Cairns Winery and Vineyard in the NW
section of the lagoon. There were also ~30 Bonaparte's gulls in that area.
Also present in the same general corner: 3 tundra swans. ~400 greater Scaup

At 9:10pm here in Merrickville, Eastern Ontario, as I stepped into the yard
for a bit of fresh air, I was first surprised and/or greeted by the large
orange moon that had just broken the eastern horizon to my left, and almost
simultaneously by the distant "ksew" toots of an Northern Saw-Whet Owl to
Got a call from a friend Doug Lewis that he saw a pair pf Sandhill Cranes
fling north above the Rideau River this morning around 11am.
Last year, Doug found a pair of Sandhill Cranes that I also had
independently found the same day in the large harvested cornfield just north
of Burritts Rapids. I
48 Common Nighthawks were seen flying south yesterday evening 9/13/11.

Hello Ontbirders,
Of interest to birders in the extreme south west corner of the Ottawa
township perhaps. A pair of Sandhill Cranes were seen again today close to
the road in a large open farm field (certainly the largest anywhere in the
area which I think has soybean in it) located just north of
Hello Ontbirders,
On my return from late afternoon shopping in Ottawa, having decided to pack
my scope and bins and go check Moodie Dr pond (also know as the Burnside
Ross-How Pit pond), I was very surprised to find not one but two (sibling?)
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE.
Given the relatively few gull
I watched three probable Cave or Cliff type swallows on the St.Lawrence
River from 3:30pm to 4pm this afternoon from sewage treatment plant in the
village of Cardinal. Unfortunately, the birds were too distant for a
definitive ID (even at 60x) staying entirely on the United States side of
the river
I guess I made the wrong decision to head down stream 9:30 am-ish this
morning and began searching for the Cave swallows at Morrisburg despite all
my better instincts to start at Johnstown grain storage building and work
eastward. So much for the day heating up! Anyway, by the time I got to

Congrats to Bruce on his Canadian first re: Cave Swallow.
Regarding the 3 Cave/Cliff swallows on the 12th. I was personally willing to
bet (if I were a gambling man) they were Cave Swallows, BUT (ah, the but)
shadowing at that distance was just off enough for me NOT to be able to
clinch the ID. I
There was a drake Barrow's X Common Goldeneye on the St.Lawrence River east
of the village of Cardinal among ~300 Common Goldeneye.
The bird was there about noon today while the flock was very actively
feeding. It could be surprisingly elusive at times. No sooner had I found
the bird when I lost i
Hello,
Today a single HOARY REDPOLL with about dozen Common Redpolls joined our
'resident' flock of ~35 Pine Siskins and ~20 American Goldfinch coming to
our feeders.

Hello,
Toward dusk today (2/2/09), on our return journey home from watching the
well publicized Dunrobin Great Gray Owls, Brenda Carter and I had a Great
Gray actively hunting on the west side of the Upper Dwyer Hill Road between
Panmure Road and Vaughan Side Road.
>From the Panmure Rd exit of th
Hello,
An adult Golden Eagle (escorted by a local Raven) passed low about 40 feet
and caught a thermal right over our house here in Merrickville at 12: 40
p.m. this afternoon. It lingered for a minute before moving on. Brenda
managed to get outside in time to have binocular filling views. "Yard"
Not that I truly want to be still reporting "winter finches" on this bright
but chilly spring morning- a Hoary Redpoll (exhibiting beautiful rose pink
breast and rump) showed up with about 10 Common Redpolls at our feeders.
Also a few Pine Siskins (1 'green morph"), and a bunch of new arrival

Having not seen reports of Bohemians yet this winter (apologies if I've
overlooked any), Simon Lunn and I had a flock of 18 on Amherst Island
yesterday. The Red-bellied Woodpecker was in the area of the owl woods bird
feeders.
Good birding,

Hello Ontbirders,
Apologies for the late report. David O'Kines and I had a Connecticut Warbler
singing while doing the PEBO Bailey Bird-a-thon yesterday morning.
The bird sang within fifteen feet at the very edge of the vegetation on the
coastal side of the road about 100 meters south of the seco
Hello Ontbirders,
I just had a Tufted Titmouse at 12:20pm today coming to my feeder located a
few km north of the village of Merrickville in Lanark County.
I am not sure of the status of this species locally, and wonder whether it
might actually be a first record of this species in Lanark county?
