Solved my problem, so I will post it here for the masses.
Problem was, the fonts were not being placed in the same directory that X
thought they were.
When I ran 'X -configure', the xorg.conf.new it produced pointed fonts to
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/... when they were in fact at
/usr/X11R6/lib64/f

I did that first, then found the Xdefaults entry. My concern is that
somewhere along the way I goofed. Or maybe this has always been taken
care of for me and I just didn't notice.

Hello,

My problem with compiling XOrg was actually very different to what you
describe. I do remember having problems with the log file, but also
when I compiled it as unpriviledged, I ended up missing several files

Firstly, I compiled without some --enables.
I do not know why reason I put &&.
In portuguese I could say `Foi mal`!
It is running now.
Thanks.

I am using BLFS 6.1.
I have installed fluxbox.
I did not installed all packages.
I can run mplayer in the xterm.
I noted that the gmplayer was not installed.
Why?
My configure was the following:
patch -Np1 -i ../MPlayer-1.0pre7-kernel_2.6-1.patch &&
./configure --prefix=/usr --confdir=/etc/mpl

Hi,
I'm trying to install gcc-3.4.4 with c, c++, objc, ada and f77
on my lfs (svn-20050808).
I followed the instructions from blfs (also svn).
After running the test-suite I decided not to install it, due
to the massive amount of unexpected failures.
I blamed gnat for it. But it isn't gnats fault

Thinking about this further, I wonder if the fact that the book calls
for using --enable-layout=FHS and there is a BLFS patch which modifies
this layout, and then you turn around and install Apache in /opt if
the APXS build system is simply fubar'd.

the problem and send it to the package maintainers.
