don't know socket programming and really much of the X-protocoll :-)
Most window managers depend not only on X-libs but also on other
"helper" libs (KDE needs QT and gnome needs ... well gnome)

s sure that the firmare_helper and the run_x progs will be
compiled/installed (you did that by compiling the extensions one after
an other)
but if you don't have any firmware loading problem messages in dmeseg
the firmware should be loaded
now you can try an iwconfig and look if there are any
hen check if the place if the place of udev_run_hotplugd and
udev_run_devd are right
make sure you compiled/installed udev with
EXTRAS="extras/firmware extras/run_directory"
this was what it make work for me ... (in the end)
