Woody, I was able to ask for a lesson at the start, but will only do it if
there are not enough experienced dancers to help. I’m told to expect new
dancers rolling in throughout the evening, so we will have to just teach as we
go.

Galen,
The dance you're looking for might be "Colorful Corner"
(not "Colorful Contra") by Tom Thoreau.

Hi all!
I'm looking for a dance called Colorful Contra. I don't know the author.
Anyone know it?
Thanks,
Galen
Three days ago we learned that the good ladies of the Monday Club (who own
the building where we dance) don't like the word "Whiskey" in our
English/American dance weekend (High Tea & Whiskey), so we're changing the
name to
wait for it

Dance with a partner and all your friends -- all at the same time!

[For me, the unique value proposition of country dancing (English, contra,
Irish, Scottish, Regency, Victorian, square) is that you're dancing
I like the "dancing with the stars" idea. Perhaps the whole point is to *
not* make sense.
I'll just throw out this one:
*Contras
*Extreme Social Dancing
(It;s not for everyone.)
I like the "extreme" part. Kind of gives it an edge.

Sorry to be a downer, but I think that'd be completely incoherent to anybody
who hadn't been to a contra, english, or square dance before.
Picture - four hands joined in a star (contra-style, or English hands-across
style, or even "clump" style) - Tagline - Come dancing with the Stars!

I wonder whether in anybody's are the "Meetup" system is active - and if so, is
your group listed in it? It seems to bring the occasional newcomer to some of
Philly's many dance venues.

Great idea Martha! I like it. I need to revisit the Ants/Pants thing. I
find as a "non-traditional" student that most of the others in my classes,
while not all 18 but varying ages, greet the word dance with raised eyebrow
and glances askew. That word alone seems to be a bit of a "turn off",
A tagline like, "Come dance with your friends" might work, especially if you
can put it on a poster that you give to a few of those college students to post on
college walls, and to act as contacts for spreading the word.

How right you are, Mary! Our "messaging" could use a lot of work. We have a
fabulous overall message to deliver - community, civility, enjoyment,
exercise, friendliness - if all human endeavors had the mores and customs of
many of our dance organizations, we'd have a great world to live in. But
I'm fairly new to the list and I too, have trouble locating what I'm looking
for in these emails. Not only are the subject lines misleading, but we see
all the headers and footers and other such clutter. Has anyone considered
something like a facebook or google group? It is a much more elegant

Hi callers
I had the opportunity to call in Dover NH at the 1st Thursday night dance
with interesting results. (guest callers are welcome!)
The dance that I chose was Dan Pearls 'The Rendezvous' (see below)
The band had just changed tunes, I turned away from the crowed for the briefest

Any contra dance band CD that has a good beat and clear melody line: Rodney
Miller, Nat Hewitt, Larry Unger. Frank Ferrell.
I have a question about music that an aspiring caller could practice
to? What is something that would be a good beginner band to listen to
while practicing at home?
What signifies a "crooked tune"?
