Went to Montezuma and vicinity today with Dan Watkins.
AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN continues at Knox-Marcellus (K-M) Marsh Montezuma NWR.
The bird took off and flew at times low to the water and for a while directly
toward
us landing fairly close to Towpath Rd. Of course my camera is broke( I dropp
Planned a trip to Montezuma days ago for today given that it would be the best
weather day and got lucky with the late report of the AMERICAN WHITE
PELICAN last night.
So got up early and made it to East Road overlooking K-M Marsh Montezuma
before 9 am. I was literally seconds behind Jay and Livia
Easy get. close at times in dead trees before bridge. Great views.

I have noticed radar echoes blossoming some after sunset more so than the last
couple weeks.
At altitudes of about 3000 to 5000 feet AGL the echoes were moving from north
to south, below that;
the echoes are moving more west to east suggesting maybe some of these are
insects?? Or maybe

I've seen Robins doing essentially the same thing on the same trail though they
stayed put on the bark mulch for much longer than 15 seconds. Looked for ants
too but did not see any. Seem to remember it was always on a hot day.

Visitor's center was quiet except there was one injured
SNOW GOOSE blue form. It is quite dry there now so no shorebirds of note.

9:30 AM Sunday, May 19. Flew into first lagoon east of auto tour
road (Larue?), touched down and quickly departed high and southward toward
Cayuga lake. A low flying Bald Eagle may have been the reason.

Went up the east side of Cayuga Lake and to Montezuma with my friends, Dan
Watkins, Rich Youket and Renee DePrato.
Our first stop was Stewart Park and there really wasn't much. We had a male
CANVASBACK and male REDHEAD in the far southeast part of the lake south

The cold, snowy conditions and northerly winds have slowed
down many of the more "hardy"migrants that winter in the southern U.S. It still
looks
like this weekend and early next week will have mainly northerly winds
so birds will continue their trickle northward. BUT It looks like from
Wednesday a pair of pileated woodpeckers came for suet. The suet
baskets are located on opposite sides of a beech tree a few feet from
the study window. They flew off before I could take a photo. It is
common to see either one of the pair, but very seldom are both seen.

Summerhill, still on Salt Road, was a flock of over 100 AMERICAN
CROWS and among them was at least 2 COMMON RAVENS, calling audibly
somewhere around or in the flock. All in all, a nice birding trip, and not

The calls came from the spruces near the intersection of Salt and Dressler road
on the Salt Rd side fairly deep in. The call notes were slow and I don't
believe the
bird was in flight as it did not seem to move. Could not find this guy and it
called
infrequently for about 5-10 minutes or so.

We struck out on the evening grosbeaks but heard 1 red crossbill (not sure
which type). Single call note. Repeated often. Much slower than white winged .
Also heard at least one (probably more)white winged crossbills flyby with their
more mechanical like calls repeated rapidly.

Was just there. Did not get the evening grosbeaks. But fox sparrow still
present under tree you mentioned close. Also pretty sure i heard a goshawk from
the spruce on the hill behind the chalet. It was making its "wail" call. Did
not see it. There were many crows around going nuts up there. Not
Northern gannet immature flew north and out of sight seen well from long
point. Also 2 long tailed ducks close. There was a major feeding frenzy of
gulls. Waited for some time but nothing unusual showed up. Gannet was long gone
by this time. Did have red breasted merganser with some common lo

Around 7 am this morning 3 EVENING GROSBEAKS came to our feeders. A fourth one
joined them about 40 minutes later followed soon thereafter by 16 PINE
SISKINS. Wish I could have stayed around to see if redpolls and crossbills
would be next!

I had a similar episode near our home in Portland, Oregon a year ago. It was
about 11:15PM and crow flew over calling. Totally bizarre. I've never heard a
crow call this long after dark.

chips empty (I have the guard on it so no squirrels get in) and
a bigger diameter tube 1/4 empty. They were full this morning
when I left for work!! I filled both tubes up again and in about 15 minutes
I counted 53 PINE SISKINS!!! T
The Nelson's Sparrow is still around at Tri-Cities Airport in Endicott, NY as
of today. It was
relocated this morning by Mike Ackeley and I heard two short whisper like
songs this afternoon, sounds very much like a salt-marsh sparrow! Anyway,
while staking out to get a glimpse of this bird (which
Nelson's Sparrow reported in Broome County by Bob Grosek.
Must be a pretty big flight of these guys!

Bird echoes rapidly expanding on radar after s

awhile. It is a noticeably chunkier looking than the birds seen earlier this
month. Don't know if it is fluffed up due to the temperatures or if it has
added fat in preparation for migration.

were the RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, BUFF-BREASTED

Went with Melissa Penta to Montezuma and Vicinity Today.
Started at Knox-Marcellus this morning from Towpath Road.
Overcast skies, light breeze and pleasant temperatures
made for great viewing. Very little heat shimmer. Spent
from 930 am to 1230 pm...where does all the time go when

I was on van Dyne Spoor Road today about 1 pm when I saw
a mostly white bird perched among about 1/2 dozen Redwing Blackbirds.
I had the privilege today of leading our local bird club to
Montezuma wetlands complex. The focus for this trip
was shorebirds. My goal was to get good looks at
many different species for the group, and point out key
field marks and behaviors. We had 10 people and
saw 12 different species of shoreb
I just had approximately 40 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS floating around
close to exit 67N in Endicott, NY! I think there migration is picking up.

details of where or when except that it was today, August 2nd. We certainly
did not have these two species today but it is a huge area. Wish the report
