Then there's another side of that argument. I know someone who was recently
sought out and hired specifically because of his involvement with lists and
blogs, and had his name not been out there in the open, he most assuredly
would not have been contacted.

Whilst I agree WHOLEHEARTEDLY with you, some people have the luxury of being
picky. For others, where perhaps getting a job is a bit harder, there's no
reason to stack the deck any further against them ...

Devil's advocate: perhaps there were one or more interviews you weren't
invited to because Googling was the first stage of their vetting process.

Yep, my point exactly. I'd never know, but I would be decriminated against.
Which is why I use an alias - not as a shield to hide my identity to you all
- but to not make waves in the wrong seas.

Very true, but perhaps another angle is that the prospective employer
would dig up information about you, then go through the motions of
interviewing you, and then later politely told you that they found
someone more qualified. Not much you can do about that I think.

I know this is late in the thread... but on most boards, mailing lists, etc.
I post under my own name, there's a couple that I don't but it's more
because I dont really care what the folks on the particular board think of
me. Even then, my name is usually in my signature..

I post under my real full name with full knowledge that what I say is
probably being archived somewhere. Everyone here has to understand that
there is no way MD can prevent someone from archiving this list and
making it public.

Those that have met me in person should know that I'm the same person I

I tend to chop off my sig. on threads/messages that are clearly personal
discussion/viewpoint threads (as much of this list tends to be) rather than
professional ones to make clear that my opinions are personal and have
nothing to do with professional business.
As for knowing/working with someone

I don't choose co-workers based on personal views but I would be
concerned with your inability to move past this. :)
