XMLparse worked like a charmer... I am also on CFMX6.1 so CFXML didn't work
for me to begin with..

That was it. Its being interpreted on output to the browser. Weird but
probably exactly whats expected..

Yes. You can't put a string containing a well-formed XML document within
CFXML, because a well-formed XML document contains an XML declaration:
?xml version=1.0 ... ?
