Ron, I have run in to the same kind of problems and I know how frustrating it can be. Go back to the basics. With the switch in on and start positions you should have a full 12 volts going to the HEI unit and also at coil positive. If both are good, the coil should fire. A good auto repair shop

Ron Make sure your distributor is turning when you crank the engine. That could explain only seeing spark on #1 cylinder. Also take a good look at the ignition coil. I'm assuming that yours is in the cap? Check *ALL* your grounds very carefully . One last thought for you. If you take a 12 volt
