I agree that a TH350 is probably the most cost-effective trans but if you can afford it,a 2004R would work very well behind a 283. A 700R4 would require driveshaft shortening while a 2004R is the same length as a Poweglide. All else being equal,an overdrive will be good for an additional 5mpg,
