this syntactic sugar mainly because users will define queries schemas using GUI and with a UI steamed from faceted classification that basically does more or less the same. I Lionel, First let me state that your situation more common then not so you are in the middle of a crowd. The problem I am running into, though, is that our department has no defined processes. In my research, I have found that, until we define our processes, the CMS cannot really help us.
