I have used the PYI Shaft Seal on three different boats over 20 years. I do follow PYI's recommendations for maintenance and bellows replacement (every 5 years?). If you go with a traditional stuffing box, I have read very good things about the newer, lower drip and friction packing materials.

I stayed with traditional myself... I couldn't find anything to sway me to the dripless style and a fellow Viking owner I respect highly suggested I stay with the same one that was there. So I got a new hose, high quality hose clamps and new packing and followed the instruction on pbase. --
