Mark, You have to release the main sheet AND vang when hoisting on the halyard. This is the case with or without a topping lift. In your case you have been pulling the leech (trailing edge) full tight and attempting to lift the end of the boom against the main sheet and vang. Josh Muckley S/V Se

It’s a bit confusing — you need to watch upper- and lower-case when you talk about the Raymarine products. The E80, along with the other E Series and all of the older C Series, use an older operating system. This update does NOT apply. This update is for the newer a Series, c Series, e Series

Mark, I did this this year and I am happy with the set-up. The change is very simple and not that expensive. It saves one extra hassle of disconnecting or dropping the topping lift when you set sail. And as a bonus, it saves the leach of the sail from the chaff. You will love it. Marek

My Boomkicker works, more or less, like you say your rigid vang does. I guess it depends on how it was installed (how much spring was put into the Boomkicker?). The Boomkicker pushes the boom up and the vang pulls it down. The balance of these two forces keeps the boom where you want it to be.

I have the Garhauer rigid vang on my 30 and love it. We have a boomkicker on the J-80 and I don't. The 80 system isn't as easy to adjust as the Garhauer, and that may be the J-80 method, which has adjusters on each side of the boat. You pull like hell and very little happens. Not so with the Gar

I see no issue with using the main halyard to support the boom when the main sail is down. Sailed on lots of boats that do exactly that. Touche's topping lift is wire. I've just been to lazy to change it to a high tech line. I rigged a couple of fiddle blocks on the end for adjusting the height
