Read Nigel Calder's article (Diesel Issues) in March issue of 'Sail' for a
different take on infrequent filter changes and the potential consequences.

Hi Rick- There are three filters and I was planning on changing all of them
since I have no idea how old they are (>3 years).
The Racor is a 30µm filter. It sounds like this one needs to be bled, so I am
guessing there is a bleed screw on top, so I would fill the bowl, loosen the
screw and th

Okay, so why did everybody settle on Dow 795 (instead of 3M 4200 or some other
sealing adhesive)?

Depends on which filter you’re talking about.
The Kabuto based Universal diesels I’ve had experience with (ditto the Betas)
are self-bleeding. So if you’re changing the 10 micron filter on the engine,
you just need to turn on the switch to activate the lift pump, and crank the
engine. It mig
You shouldn't have to bleed a Universal diesel. Just change the element,
add some fresh diesel to top off the filter (if not a spin off) and start
the engine.

Past experience makes me think that it is a matter of luck. I assume you know
to fill the fuel bowl after inserting the filter. Turn on the ignition switch
to start the electric pump and open the bleed screw on the top of the filter.
I do not recall if there was another bleed valve at the mec

Its definitely not an off the shelf setup which I have. It took a

Kevin,
This pump looks like it has more features than really needed with the automatic
feature. This one does seem to be a diaphragm pump type which can self-prime
and suck air (run dry). I’d consider just a basic pump with a manual switch.
We have a switch in the shower and turn the pump

Agreed. Hence "Hopefully one would remember it in a panic." I had actually

Not aimed at anyone in particular: All plans and equipment are
completely worthless without regular testing and practice. What you
think is being prepared may be a fantasy that will lead to a
well-planned failure. You need to find out by at least trying and using

My spinlock deck vest has a tethered cutter in a dedicated pocket as standard

My salus coastal life jacket has big pockets that contain a tethered folding
knife, and a small flashlight.
Both are quite well designed imo.

Many of those bronze strainers have, or had an internal flapper to act as a
check valve. Many of the simple 2 to 4gpm diaphragm pumps are self priming
and will pump the suction lines more or less dry. Even if they don't, the
pumps have internal check valves which prevent a lot of back flow.
