I also installed the Garboard drain plug on my LF38 and consider it one of the
best winter time improvements I ever made. My first winter I had solid ice up
to the floor from water coming down the mast.I just used a right angle drill,
small pilot hole then proper sized hole at the lowest point

Ken, you are removing all the mystery and potential for disaster from the
exercise:). The glass is pretty thick there, but it's worth a try.

There is no vertical drilling. In all the pictures you have seen the hole
is drilled in the keel stub above the lead portion of the keel.

I then used a Forstner bit the same diameter as the outside of the flange of
the drain casting to create a recess

When you say installed, you mean drilled.
So would you drill vertically down in the bildge, then horizontally from
outside so the two holes meet, then oversize the outside to accommodate
the plug housing?

Does anyone have pics or advice on how best to install a garboard drain
plug.
Shallow bildge and external lead keel make it pretty difficult to have
something that is flush on the outside yet encompass the lowest point in the
bildge to allow water to drain.
