has fairly well marked upper parts, i.e., the mantle
and upperwing feathers look like they're showing a lot of pale with darker
internal markings, very reminiscent of Glaucous Gull.

have been captive Sandhill-Whooping hybrids produced -- anyone aware
of any online photos of these birds? It would be handy to know if this
facial coloration is a reliable characteristic to separate hybrids from
aberrant sandhills. :-)

Hawk spent most of the time with both wings drooped open
slightly (it didn't have a prey item), which was odd. It was facing west
into the sun. Warming up? Looking big for the owl? Sick or injured?

After having a little coffee and listening to some spizella recordings
online, I'm thinking it is much more likely that the 1 and 2 note calls I
heard were actually the very rapid/buzzy calls of a CHIPPING SPARROW, not
Clay-colored.
I'd never heard single note calls from Clay-colored
Right now, loafing with gulls along shore below the visitor center (near
the south marina) at Lake Pueblo SP.
