This morning we had a Harris Sparrow, male in full breeding plumage, and also a
Rose Breasted Grosbeak, male not quite in full breeding plumage, in our yard.
When I tried to put the grosbeak on ebird, I had no option for Rose breasted
grosbeak. Please advise.

Lake. Yesterday I didn't see a one. The park manager said she has seen a

Between 10 and 11 am in the Matthews-Reservoir Bird Sanctuary, two of us saw a
male and female American Redstart. We also saw a Black and white warbler, many
yellow warblers, a male and female Common yellowthroat, and a few Audubon’s
yellow-rumored warblers.

Yesterday did some birding around Fort Collins and found a few oddities -
for this time of year. A couple Soras were talking at River Bend Ponds
Natural Area just to the northwest of the parking area off Cheryl St. Also
saw 5 Snow Geese (3 white - 2 intermediate), 5 Great White-fronted Geese,
On top of the Howard trail in Lory, at about 3 pm today, November 30, there
was a pygmy owl flying through the trees and then he lit on top of a
ponderosa and proceeded to turn his head this way and that. We watched him
for a good long while and he never left his perch while we were there.
On
Today at Timnath Reaervoir there was a flock of 200-225 snow geese and
another of about 50.
At Boyd lake there was one flock of about 30.

Horseshoe Lake in Loveland is still a local hangout for thousands of gulls.
Numbers peak at dusk once the landfill closes and the birds are preparing to
roost communally. Last night I noticed that the California Gulls and some
Franklin's roosted locally just off-shore, whereas the
Early this morning, Megan Miller and I headed out to Cobb Lake to see if
the rain knocked down any migrants. There were a decent number of sparrows
around including many Vesper and Chipping with singles of Savannah and
Brewer's Sparrows. We didn't find too much else in the way of migrant
I visited the local gull hotspot this evening (5:45-7 pm) and was not
disappointed, as 800 gulls lounged on the mudflats and shallow waters of
Horseshoe Lake's southwest corner, located in northeast Loveland, just west of
Boyd Lake State Park.

should report up here in Larimer County. Here we go:

A tour of Loveland and vicinity today found gull concentrations at the county
landfill and Horseshoe Lake. Both sites had hundreds of California and
Ring-billed Gulls and a dozen or so Herring Gull. The landfill also had 4
Franklin's Gull and a 3rd-cycle Lesser Black-backed Gull (in the
COBirders,
Steve Larson, Glenn Walbek and I hit a number of reservoirs in northern CO
today with Boyd Lake State Park and Lake Loveland being the most productive
gull wise, in Larimer county. Over in Weld, Windsor Lake also had a good number
of birds.

Jan 1. On Saturday, Jan 2, I visited the Larimer landfill for gull viewing

believe that the rain is the reason for this post. I just wanted to post a
recap for my birding in and around Fort Collins this week. This is going
down as the best week I've ever had birding in Fort
This afternoon I had several new arrivals including osprey on a traditional
nest platform (Prospect Road at Poudre River crossing, in Fort Collins), common
grackles, Clark's Grebe, Franklin's Gull and 3 early(?) Bonaparte's Gulls. The

I spent an hour at the Larimer landfill yesterday afternoon, February 28, after
receiving permission at the entrance kiosk. Cropping photos for online posting

Seen by my wife and me from 1:30 - 2:00 with a couple of other birders at
Bobcat Ridge.
When we got back on County Road 27, about a mile south of the turn for Bobcat
Ridge, we found 10 bald eagles circling and jousting with a murder of crows (at
least 100) over an elk carcass - very cool!
Yesterday mid-morning we walked the Overlook trail at Lory State Park and
just where a small spring crosses the trail was a mixed flock. There were
about 6-8 golden-crowned kinglets right in front of us, all hovering around
a few scraggly junipers above the water. We first heard the high-pitched
The Black Scoter, White-winged Scoter, and Long-tailed Duck are all still
at Douglas Reservoir as of late this morning. Nicole Teel, Fawn Simonds,
and I also had very nice views at a SORA in a creek west of the small metal
building on the north side of Douglas Reservoir. Nice to find.

the morning off at Annex Reservoir #8. Like Austin reported earlier today,

Horseshoe Lake in northeast Loveland is currently a gull hotspot. Late Saturday
afternoon, the muddy southeast lobe of the lake hosted:
California Gull – 600 adults, many in pairs, some copulating
Franklin’s Gull - 80+ pink-breasted adults
Ring-billed Gull – 15 or 20, various ages

This morning one lone spotted towhee was calling for a babysan on Reservoir
Ridge in west Fort Collins. Dozens of meadowlarks were singing in the
meadow.
In Mid-March we were in Cave Creek Canyon AZ and we saw several early
warblers. The Virginia's warbler that I found was said to have been 1-2
A harbinger of spring, despite the high winds…While walking our dog, I was
privileged to see a beautiful male Mountain Bluebird flitting around the
grasses in the Molly Moon Meadow near Red Feather Lakes this morning. I just
hope he still has many friends, after our Mountain Bluebirds were
On Friday, Lake Loveland's afternoon gull flock was large (300 birds, 90%
Ring-billed) and had a variety of species, but the reported adult Glaucous and
possible immature Great Black-backed from Thursday were no-shows. Singleton
adult Lesser Black-backed and California were the only darker
I visited the Larimer County landfill this afternoon expecting to find the
mother load of gulls, but was disappointed. There was a decent flock of 500 or
so, with a couple of adult Lesser Black-backed and good numbers of Herring and
California accompanying the throng of Ring-billed Gulls. I
Horsetooth Reservoir's south end hosted 5 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, and a juv.
Glaucous Gull was at Horseshoe Lake's northeast corner late Friday afternoon. I
also heard from Cole Wild that two Tundra Swans were at Houtt's Reservoir,
where the Brant continues as well.

Among the 300+ loafing gulls on the water at Horsetooth Res was one adult
Iceland Gull. I could only make out one blackish feather in the outermost
primary - indicating Kumlien's Gull. Otherwise, it was smallish, fairly
white-headed, very pale gray on the back, and extensive white in the
Toured northern Larimer County yesterday--Rawhide to Timnath and all in
between. Lots of duck variety at various lakes.

Getting out of the heat this past week, I have spent a delightful time
above treeline. Two days ago on the way to Mount Ida from Poudre Pass, I
saw 2 roughed-legged hawks hovering and then diving into the krumholtz.
They did this several times. On this same trip, I watched a prairie
falcon buzz
The summer tanager showed up this morning again at about 6 AM on the suet
and then when I came home for lunch a squirrel was around, but as soon as
the squirrel left the tanager came back. With the northerly wind he may

I checked out a bunch of lakes in the Loveland area this afternoon (Saturday,
March 30). Upper Hoffman Lake and Cattail Pond were both notably chock full of
waterfowl with good variety, but nothing rare. The Trumpeter Swan apparently
has moved on. The best gull action was at
On, 3/10, Mary Geder and I stopped by to see if the CommonRedpolls were still
in Fort Collins. We counted around 23 individuals at the feeders and in the
trees next to the feeders, behind the Discovery Museum, at the NW corner of

Just got a call from Rachel Hopper and Dave Leatherman and Dave found two
black BRANT at City Park in Ft. Collins, Sheldon Lake on Mulberry and Sheldon
drive. This is the same area as Grandview Cemetery. This is roughly 5.5 miles
west on Mulberry from I-25. They are apparently
This morning Cheri Orwig and I did some birding around the Loveland area, also
Fossil Creek and Timnath Reservoir. This evening I went to several spots in
southwest Loveland that we didn't go to this morning. Highlights were:

All - not the easiest three-toed woodpecker to get to, but we saw one
on the Estes Cone 2.6 miles from the Long's Peak trailhead ranger
station at 4:00 p.m. Friday, 10/21. A hairy landed right next to him
and worked the same trunk; very nice for comparison! Elevation was
about 10,500 feet.
I went to the Larimer County Birding Fair at Fossil Creek Reservoir this
morning for a couple of hours before I had to go to work. There were more birds
on the lake than I saw there last week. The best were two flyover Caspian
Terns. Land birding was the great today. The birds along the lake
I went up to Horsetooth Reservoir today west of Ft. Collins with some
friends and explored the South Bay area while they did all the beach water
activities. We parked at the Day Use Area (beach area) along the west shore.
