can't make that decision for them
and it's best to just knock them back into the stone age. America
doesn't seem to have had much success in "liberating" countries.

Yes, but only if the programs that want to play sound make their call
through artsd. If you've got a non-arts program that expects to drop
sound onto the /dev/dsp device file directly, it chucks a hissyfit
because artsd has already claimed it. (At least on my soundcard.)
Occasionally you can use artsdsp to fit things in, but not always.

could be set up to supply lots of pipes, eg. /dev/dsp,
/dev/dsp1, /dev/dsp2 and all calls are mixed by the server. Yeah. I know
- lotta work, and it would probably have to partially exist in the
kernel, if anywhere.

Mine's more of a x-server hang, where I can't get either keyboard or
mouse to respond. It usually happens at 100% cpu utilisation. (I.e. in
the middle of a game.) Then I have to *shudder* cold-boot. *sighs*

drivers is that they don't seem to build against the post 8.0 kernels.
*sighs* Maybe it's time I upgraded from X4.0.3 to X4.1?

I got something similar when I tried the M8.0 install and bounced to
tty2 during package install, but the install GUI put up a message saying
(paraphrase) "Install of package x failed . looks like a memory
problem." then the entire system just froze and had to be rebooted.

really isn't much better than the kde mount/unmount device files. In my
experience, autofs just doesn't respond quickly enough when you want to
swap floppies.

I'm locked behind a firewall that only allows netscape as an ftp client,
and the ftpsite that texstar has set up has a maximum number of users
equal to ten, so downloading all the files I need is a real chore and
chews up a lot of my allocated student net time. Considering how popular
these packages are, they really need to be put onto a more accessable
mirror site. Hmm. I'll get in contact with the mirror.aarnet.edu.au
manager and see what he can do.
