Easiest fix for broken X config is:
# mv -f /etc/X11/XFConfig* /tmp
# XFdrake --auto --expert

From the strace it looks like it might be waiting for user information from nss.
Do you use NIS? LDAP? Winbind? nscd? What do you get with:
$ time getent passwd |wc -l
