enabling it in pppd/Makefile.linux compiles just fine and seems to work
as well (I am using adsl via nerim.net).

fix this. Have to modprobe the ppp_generic, ppp_async, and ppp_deflate

I installed the 2.2.14-11mdk kernel source rpm on a 6.1 install, and
compiled a custom kernel; I get the same PPP error as
I ran across a similar problem with 6.1. Instead of fighting with it as
a kernal compiled option, I just used the module. If you put the
command to load the module in rc.local, ppp will always be available.
This solution isn't the best, as far as I am concerned, but it works.

have had to recompile to get my modem to work.
Just curious its kind of a pain but this system is a 233 and

It appears that the problem is caused by having two ppp's installed. I still
get an error mesage with the -9 kernel in a pop-up with kppp although I am
sending this email with ppp

I was able to work around this by doing two things:
1. Deactivate any other interfaces that have a default route configured.
In my case a local ethernet lan, thus do "ifdown eth0"
2. Uncheck the option in PPP to add a default route after connection is
established. I do this manually
