I booted with network disabled (and cups too since it
appears to also try to start network). I also booted
without inserting the pcmcia lan card (xircom
realport2 in this case).
I moved pci.agent to pci.agent.bak to disable it.

tested with previous kernel 2.4.17-16mdk and it worked

that this is indeed a kernel issue.

One other note the only reason that my laptop is
getting any attention is because I continue to try and
pci.agent might be the problem. I disabled network at
boot, I disabled pcmcia and network starting or
resuming within /etc/sysconfig/apm-scripts/resume.d, I
started with the pcmcia lan card not being inserted.
I inserted the card and while on console F12 and
