Ok just got all your message and i will don't answer to all. Actually
if you have the last kernel and initscripts you should get :
1* modprobe loop before the kernel remove (%pre)
2* regeneration initrd/installation of bootloader entry via
installkernel script.
Got it ? if you still have bug

Question:
what's the difference about the initrd used by ram disk and
setup on
a separate dir with /dev/ram0 using linuxrc,
and the /boot/initrd-xx.xx.xx ??

First, no I am not running ReiserFS.
BTW. i found some good reading material on that topic:
http://devlinux.com/projects/reiserfs/
Second,
On uname -r
2.2.16-9mdk
list for /lib/modules/2.2.16
total 72

reiserfs is in module. we won't put it in the main kernel otherwise it'll get
too big&bloated. as for ext2, we keep it in the kernel for compatibility

I am happy to report that my kernel upgrade 2.2.15 to 2.2.16 went smoothly.
Everything seems to work as before, including sound.
All i did was download the rpms and installed it with kpackage.
I was wondering if I did something wrong to get it working right :)

mkinitrd generates an initrd only if needed, based on fstab and modules.conf

Thank you, I've found the instructions that I was looking for on their
web page. You're right, I have been doing the -U to bring the new
kernels in (in my mind I thought I was keeping things cleaned up).
Anyway, I've got things running now and I'll be a little more careful
next time.
Thanks aga

Hello cooker,
I'm still having this problem after first talking about it a couple of
months ago. When using reiserfs I need the initrd image, yet when I try
to mkinitrd after the kernel upgrade I get something to the effect:
/proc/devices doesn't know about module, recompile and do insmod
